Title: Crime and Punishment (Recorded Books Edition)
    Author: Fyodor Dostoevsky
    Narrator: George Guidall
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 25 hrs and 5 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-17-00
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1995 votes
    Genres: Classics, European Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment is universally regarded as one of literature's finest achievements, as the great Russian novelist explores the inner workings of a troubled intellectual. Raskolnikov, a nihilistic young man in the midst of a spiritual crisis, makes the fateful decision to murder a cruel pawnbroker, justifying his actions by relying on science and reason, and creating his own morality system. Dehumanized yet sympathetic, exhausted yet hopeful, Raskolnikov represents the best and worst elements of modern intellectualism. The aftermath of his crime and Petrovich's murder investigation result in an utterly compelling, truly unforgettable cat-and-mouse game. This stunning dramatization of Dostoevsky's magnum opus brings the slums of St. Petersburg and the demons of Raskolnikov's tortured mind vividly to life.
    Editorial Reviews:
George Guidall's performance of this literary classic transports the audience to the slums of St. Petersburg and deep into the mind of Rodion Raskolnikov, a young Russian intellectual. Raskolnikov murders an old woman, a money-lender and pawn-broker he considers repugnant. He reasons that he'll repay his crimes with good deeds. Although he justifies the murder using reason and intellect, he is ultimately consumed by guilt. Crime and Punishment is one of the most influential works of literature in the world. Guidall's tremulous voice captures the severity and suspense of this story, making this an unforgettable experience for the listener.
    Critic Reviews:
"The novels of Dostoevsky are seething whirlpools...which hiss and boil and suck us in. They are composed purely and wholly of the stuff of the soul." (Virginia Woolf)

    Wonderful Book
I have attempted to read this book twice in the past, both times past the halfway point. Each time I added a much more painful tone to the book than the narrator did in his reading. This meant that I stopped reading the book because it was too mentally overwhelming. However, the narrator reads this book well, both adding more characterization than I did myself and providing a way to seperate characters. The 24 hours went by quickly and found it didn't seem like a long book at all.
Crime and Punishment is a beautiful novel of suffering, pride, hope, redemption, and guilt. Through Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamozov and this novel I have considered all those themes much differently in my life.
    Masterful narration of a masterpiece
I have read Dostoevsky's masterpiece in the past and wanted to reread it but considered it a huge chore. Instead, I decided to listen to George Guidall's rendition because of my past enjoyment of his amazing gift as a catalyst between the written word and the spoken word.. The audiobook immediately captured my interest and attention in a way that reading the book never did. Guidall made the characters come alive.

"Midway on our life's journey, I found myself in dark woods, the right road lost. To tell about those woods is hard - so tangled and rough...." So begins Dante Alighieri's epic poem of a journey through Hell. With the poet Virgil as his guide, Dante travels through the 9 circles of Hell, listening to the voices of the condemned until at last, "we came forth, and once more saw the stars." Poet and essayist Robert Pinsky's translation captures the intensity and passion of the literary masterpiece, and world-renowned actor John Cleese contributes a profound and electrifying performance.

"Line by line, canto by canto, Pinsky's version responds to every nuance of meaning in the original while its English remains fluid and colloquial." (Alan Williamson, The American Poetry Review)
    Members Reviews:
Good Interpretation, Somewhat difficult to follow
The Inferno is an excellent work in itself and is extremely interesting for anyone. The narration of Mr. Cleese is however somewhat difficult to follow. His overly-excited and passionate voices for the suffering denizens of hell are difficult to make out. It is however very fun to hear a voice from a Monty Python movie or the like come through. Listen carefully and follow along and you shouldn't have too many problems.
    Surprisingly Good
John Cleese narrate Dante?! Definitely took a few minutes to purge the Monty Python demons from my head, but once I got into it I think Cleese was a remarkably good narrator. Some complained it was hard to understand, but I thought he was very understandable.
    Fantastic narration and translation
John Cleese is perfect, and Pinsky's translation is the best. My only problem with this title is the abridgment. Why is it abridged? Several cantos are left out, and it only serves to detract from the experience. The unabridged readings on Audible only seem to be about an hour longer.
For those unfamiliar with the text, the Inferno is the first part of a trilogy about hell, purgatory, and heaven (in that order). The story of Dante's journey through hell is dark, but not scary. I'd describe it as wondrous. It's like a sight-seeing trip. What you are seeing is horrible, yet so vivid and interesting that you can't turn away. My favorite part about it is how specific Dante is about everything. He describes exactly where in hell each type of sinner should go and what their punishment should be, all in great detail.
The other side of the Inferno is its historical context. Not only is Inferno a great read, but it also offers a glimpse at Dante's worldview. In almost every canto Dante encounters people he either knew personally or were well known at the time. In this way it almost reads like an angsty teenager's blog, calling out all of the ass kissers and bullies that he can't otherwise do anything about.
I prefer Robert Pinsky's translation because it is modern, it doesn't try to rhyme (yet preserves the flow), and it is beautifully blunt.
Regardless of the missing cantos (don't worry, they are few), I highly recommend this audio book. John Cleese really is amazing, and nobody else has narrated Pinsky's translation.

    Publisher's Summary:
A father's murder sets the stage for a riveting tale of intrigue and passion that also explores profound issues of faith and ethics. This classic novel - considered Dostoevsky's finest work - tells the story of crazed landowner Fyodor Karamazov and his four sons - Dmitry, Ivan, Alyosha, and the illegitimate Smerdyakov. Fyodor's murder sets the stage for a complex tangle of moral and ethical struggles that involve patricide, betrayal, sacrifice, and glory. A profound psychological study and a penetrating analysis of the search for faith,
The Brothers Karamazov explores the most fundamental questions of human nature. This excellent new translation conveys the essence of Dostoevsky's original Russian.

    Disapointing
This is a great book. However, it does not lend itself to an abridged version. Sure, you get the plot, but miss out on all the interesting philosophical sections. Debra Winger narrates the book. Her voice is rather monotonal and this book, a somewhat dark Russian novel filled with mostly male characters, really does not lend itself well to a female narrator. I truly wish an unabridge version was available, with the same narrator that does the unabridged version of Crime and Punishment (available from Audible). I downloaded Crime and Punishment just after listening to Brothers Karamazov and it was much more satisfying (from the standpoint of narrators voice and unabridged).
    Don't Buy This
What disappointed you about The Brothers Karamazov?
My goodness, that an actress could read so poorly and her director and editors let it pass is a big disappointment
And, I must have missed that it was an abridged version. Argh! Don't do this with the great classics
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Brothers Karamazov?
    I had to stop listening
What didnt you like about Debra Wingers performance?
Wooden, mono-stress, one word at a time reading, not honoring comma pauses much less full stops.
    Any additional comments?
Get a good reader and do an unabridged version. Thanks
    No Grand Inquisitor
Though abridged I'd have thought they would keep the Grand Inquisitor parable but it is missing. Disappointed in Debra Winger's performance which I thought was leaden.
    Very disappointed
This is the most disappointing purchase I've made from Audible. I'd hoped for a lively "refresher" after having read the full novel many years ago. But as others note, the abridgement just doesn't cut it. And the narration is particularly bad, slow and expressionless - puts me to sleep. Please don't let Ms. Winger try this again! There were some breaks where it seemed like the narrator was pausing for a drink of water or something.
    Too abridged, uneven performance
Eager to hear the 1990 translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, I bought this abridgment. Debra Winger's performance was uneven. There were oddly long pauses, too. This newer translation is a great improvement, very natural. I hope Audible will produce an unabridged version.

    Editorial Reviews:
Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame tells the sad-yet-hopeful story of Quasimodo who loved kind Esmeralda to death. This classic example of French gothic literature has inspired numerous adaptations because of its enchanting story and beloved characters. George Guidall gives a performance deserving of Hugo's masterpiece. He effortlessly handles characters' French accents and engages the listener's imagination with well-placed pauses. This audiobook is a cathartic meditation on love and loyalty, enjoyable for every moment of its 22 hours.
    Members Reviews:
    Overwhelmingly sad
George Guidall is the perfect choice to narrate this sad tale: he brings a gravity to the story that adds to the pathos but does not drag down the narrative.
If you're not familiar with the story, or know it only from the sanitized film versions, be forewarned: there is little here but heartbreak. Quasimodo's fate is more closely tied to Esmeralda's than you might imagine, and Phoebus and Pierre Gringoire are both unmitigated scoundrels. The famous attack on Notre Dame, beaten back by Quasimodo, is not a heroic action but the result of a tragic misunderstanding. It's not a kid's story, maybe not even one for sensitive adolescents.
The novel has some weaknesses. I've read it several times, and I still get annoyed by the long essay on Paris architecture that Hugo drops into the middle of the story. I know his digressions have fans, but I'm not one of them. If the audiobook were organized by chapters, I would suggest skipping over these, especially if this is your first time reading it; but unfortunately it's organized by CD.
All that aside, though - the digressions, the overwhelming sadness of the story - it really is a masterpiece, and in Guidall's hands it retains both its pace and its power. A drop of water and a little pity, says Quasimodo. That's what it was all about.
Tragic endings in Paris of 1482
The story of the hunchback is not as well known as that of Les Miserables. There are fewer movies and no Broadway play. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is facinating and horrifying and tragic. I felt immersed in Victor Hugo's Paris of 1482, with its gallows at every crossroads and its levels of local justice. I wept at the end and even felt pity for the evil Arch Deacon. The narrator is excellent although the sound quality, converted from type 1 to type 2, is marginal. The recording should be restored/reconverted properly.
    Good book, bad quality
While this is a great book the sound quality makes it really difficult to listen to in the car! I find myself cranking up the volume all the way and still having a hard time hearing it.
    Mistake in Publisher's Summary section
This audio book is based on book of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Dover Thrift Editions)" translated by A. L. Alger, not by Catherine Liu.

    Amazing
The reader does a wonderful job- accents and pronounciations are superb. The story is fascinating, though I see why Disney wanted to rewrite the tragic ending. A bit of the description of Paris is rambling, without a map to help envision the locational references the author makes. Sound quality could be better, but it's not bad.

    Genres: Classics, European Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
For the first time in English in over a century comes a new translation of the forgotten sequel to Dumas' The Three Musketeers, continuing the dramatic tale of Cardinal Richelieu and his implacable enemies.
In 1844, Alexandre Dumas published The Three Musketeers, a novel so famous and still so popular today that it scarcely needs introduction. Shortly thereafter he wrote a sequel, Twenty Years After, that resumed the adventures of his swashbuckling heroes.
Later, toward the end of his career, Dumas wrote The Red Sphinx, another direct sequel to The Three Musketeers that begins not 20 years later but a mere 20 days afterward. The Red Sphinx picks up right where the The Three Musketeers left off, continuing the stories of Cardinal Richelieu, Queen Anne, and King Louis XIII - and introducing a charming new hero, the Comte de Moret, a real historical figure from the period. A young cavalier newly arrived in Paris, Moret is an illegitimate son of the former king and thus half-brother to King Louis. The French Court seethes with intrigue as king, queen, and cardinal all vie for power, and young Moret soon finds himself up to his handsome neck in conspiracy, danger - and passionate romance.
Dumas wrote 75 chapters of The Red Sphinx for serial publication but never finished it, and so the novel languished for almost a century before its first book publication in France in 1946. While Dumas never completed the book, he had earlier written a separate novella, The Dove, that recounted the final adventures of Moret and Cardinal Richelieu.
Now for the first time, in one cohesive narrative, The Red Sphinx and The Dove make a complete and satisfying story line - a rip-roaring novel of historical adventure, heretofore unknown to English-language listeners, by the great Alexandre Dumas, king of the swashbucklers.
    Members Reviews:
Rather disappointing; stick with DArtagnan series
The Red Sphinx is promoted as a sequel to The Three Musketeers. Though it might be placed in sequence to it as far as the timing of it, you will not meet any of the delightful four musketeers, nor will you be entertained as you might expect, especially if you read the full DArtaganan set of books, culminating in The Man with the Iron Mask. We have a lot of Richelieu and Louis XIII and hear a lot about the intrigue in the court. But thats the problem - we hear a lot: a lot of narrative, some dialog and conversation (way too much), we hear about way too many characters, but there is little action. The opening seems promising, but then the book gets bogged down and it takes a long time to revive interest, which occurs more than half way in, with the military campaign in Italy. Though the translators notes try to justify completing the story of the Comte de Moret with the novella The Dove, I found it totally unconvincing. Until that point, the Comte de Moret is a womanizer, being attracted to (and more) every pretty woman he meets. It was not at all convincing that he would become so besotted with Isabelle de Lautrec, be willing to take vows if they do not come together again, etc. Come on, this guy had the hots for every woman he saw. Further, The Dove was a drawn out presentation of an obvious conclusion, given the path that it started (which, as I said, did not seem characteristic of de Moret). The letters sent between the two lovers are repetitive and boring.

Annoying Page Sounds haunt this entire recording
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
This is a classic book of which all can enjoy.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator's voices for the different characters are great, and his inflection and pace wonderful. The issue I have is the recording itself. The paper page sounds really detract from the story, and are throughout the entire recording.
    Great book, average narration
What other book might you compare Journey to the Center of the Earth to and why?
It is similar in style, subject, and plot to the Mysterious Island and the Lost World, likely because they are from the same time period.
    Any additional comments?
The narrator gets a bit too dramatic sounding when there isn't really a reason to. It seems like he wanted to make the science references less dry, but it sounded out place to me. Otherwise, I liked his narration.
    Wonderful book, fantastic narrator
This classic was really brought to life with passion by the narrator. You do have to bear in mind that about 5 hours alone are taken up in just the journeying, but it's nevertheless a great adventure.
Classic Is Not A Synonym For Excellence
Overall I give it 3-stars. Narration gets 5-stars, and story gets 2.5 stars. Boring, uneventful, no intrigue or excitement. Though the author went into great detail in the story I did not find anything in it worth the irreplaceable time I have spent on the book. Save for the narration, I found it uninteresting and would have been better off not having read it at all.
    An Introduction to Audio Books
What a wonderful journey! I flew through this book. Not only was Verne's story engaging and exciting, Jack Sondericker's reading was immensely enjoyable--entertaining, full of vigor, unique voices for each character. This was a fantastic introduction to the world of audio books.
