    Publisher's Summary:
When Charlie Trumper inherits the barrow his grandfather used to peddle fruit and vegetables in turn-of-the-century Whitechapel, England, he inherits his enterprising spirit as well. Charlie's deeply held ambition to raise himself out of the poverty of London's East End is destined to be realized, but there are many obstacles to overcome, including a tour of duty at the front in World War I, where he encounters the man who will become his lifelong enemy.
As the crow flies, it is only a few short miles from Whitechapel to Chelsea Terrace, the upscale London neighborhood where Trumper's department store - and the realization of all Charlie's dreams - will have its beginnings. But for Charlie, following the threads of love, ambition, and revenge, it will be an epic journey that carries him across three continents and through the triumphs and disasters of the 20th century.

Becoming a Fan of Jeffrey Archer
First of all John Lee has always been one of my favorite readers and I believe that only he could have done justice to the many characters that Archer created in this book. Lee is a master of the various English and Scottish accents, and does a good job with American accents too, which added greatly to the enjoyment of the book.
Although the book covers over 60 years and 4 generations, it really is about Charlie, who is the glue in the story and everything centers around him. You soon get to like him and begin to wish the best for him in the various challenges he faces in his life. However, the story is not filled with major intrigue and is therefore relaxing but still interesting enough to hold your attention. The ending is especially poignant.
The book is almost 21 hours long but seemed to fly by, definitely worth the time.
A strong story, with an even stronger reader
I'll admit, I'd listen to John Lee read Dixie Joke Cups for 30+ hours and call it brilliant, but his narration of As the Crow Flies, boosts, but just barely, an already awesome story. I say 'just barely' not because of any failing on Lee's part, but because the story is strong enough to sit right up there as worthy of being read by Lee.
Like many other readers, I relate this story to Ken Follett's Century trilogy (also read by Lee). There are some broad similarities (period and narrator), but they are two, separately wonderful titles.
Follett's trilogy is historical fiction, and therefore has more historical insight. I love historical fiction, and I love that trilogy.
As the Crow Flies is more of a period piece. The few historical people and points mentioned aren't inaccurate, but it's not about that. It's a drama set in early 20th century Britain. I would compare it more closely to Downton Abby or Poldark, with maybe a little less romance.
One thing that stands out is the writing style. The story unfolds for a while from a narrator's point of view, then jumps back a little and picks up as if reading one of the main character's memoirs. I've probably made this sound more confusing than it really is; it's not confusing and actually flows quite well. The 'memoir-like' portions of the story serve to fill in detail about previously-covered events, as well as explain the motivations and feelings of the main players.
This is my first Jeffrey Archer book. If his others are nearly this good I've got a lot of good stuff to look forward to.

    Publisher's Summary:
New York Times best-selling author Allison Pataki follows up on her critically acclaimed debut novel, The Traitor's Wife, with the little-known and tumultuous love story of "Sisi", the Austro-Hungarian Empress and captivating wife of Emperor Franz Joseph.
The year is 1853, and the Habsburgs are Europe's most powerful ruling family. With his empire stretching from Austria to Russia, from Germany to Italy, Emperor Franz Joseph is young, rich, and ready to marry.
Fifteen-year-old Elisabeth, "Sisi", Duchess of Bavaria, travels to the Habsburg Court with her older sister, who is betrothed to the young emperor. But shortly after her arrival at court, Sisi finds herself in an unexpected dilemma: she has inadvertently fallen for and won the heart of her sister's groom. Franz Joseph reneges on his earlier proposal and declares his intention to marry Sisi instead.
Thrust onto the throne of Europe's most treacherous imperial court, Sisi upsets political and familial loyalties in her quest to win, and keep, the love of her emperor, her people, and of the world.
With Pataki's rich period detail and cast of complex, bewitching characters, The Accidental Empress offers a captivating glimpse into one of history's most intriguing royal families, shedding new light on the glittering Hapsburg Empire and its most mesmerizing, most beloved "Fairy Queen."

    learn your pronounciation
it was quite frustrating listening to the first half of this book because the reader completely mangled the foreign words. I don't expect perfect pronounciation but if you don't even know how to pronounce the name of the river Danube, you have no business narrating this book. doesn't anyone check the recordings?? for me, this was quite a distraction.
    Okay if you're under 15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Written for a junior high girl. Romance novel style.
What could Allison Pataki have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
    ---
How could the performance have been better?
    ---
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
hard to listen to history told in such an amateurish fashion
    Could have been great ....
Why do modern authors feel the need to sexualize historical figures outside of known facts? Truly it is an insult to the very real people they write about. The beginning and ending of this telling of the story of Empress Sisi do a disservice to an otherwise very good book.
Not the best type of historical fiction
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
This type of historical fiction is not for me. The story was unnecessarily romanticized (this seems to happen frequently to anything about Elizabeth of Austria)...her life was not at all romantic; her marriage was not necessarily loveless but it was not a happy one, her mother in law ran the roost and she developed what would be considered anorexia today in order to cope, her male child died a horrible death and she was murdered!). There was too much dialogue, too much unnecessary detail and too many obviously fictional scenes.

    Great Entertainment, Exciting!
What made the experience of listening to Captured by a Laird the most enjoyable?
It had everything that makes a good book; a revenge tragedy (a drama popular in the 16th - 17th centuries), romance, intrigue, a handsome, fierce Highlander who storms a lovely widow's gates to exact punishment on her clan and force her to marry him. The new Laird has trouble inside and outside the Castle/Keep he's conquered. It was concise and flowed right along; no boring interludes.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Captured by a Laird?
There were many but when the Laird's youngest brother (a lovable, meek nature young man with little training with the sword) rides into the path of a renown French swordsman was certainly memorable. The young Hume brother was leaving the Keep (unaware his two older brothers had been in a skirmish with the Frenchman and his men) when he saw his Laird brother and his next oldest brother in hot pursuit of the Frenchman he rode to intersect him. Would his brothers reach the Frenchman in time (one brother riding in from the side where he had been stationed as a look-out and Laird Hume a distance behind the Frenchman); will they get to him before he severs the young man's head?
What does Derek Perkins bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He has the ability to relate to each character and create different character's voices! So much better than reading it myself.
If you could rename Captured by a Laird, what would you call it?
    A Laird's Revenge!
    Any additional comments?
I highly recommend "Captured by a Laird".
    Fantastic!
I'm a big Margaret Mallory fan but I have to say Captured by a Laird is one of her very best. I was hooked from the very first chapter and could not put it down. Derek Perkins did a very good performance of this book and made it truly enjoyable.
    Captured My Heart
This first book in the Douglas Legacy series is a dramatic, well paced Scottish historical romance. It delivers a true "Scottish era" tale of Alison and David.

    A great reminder!
This is a great listen! A wonderfully written reminder of a terrible time in our history. One we must never forget!
    One of my favorite books
I read this book for the first time in 6th grade and fell in love with the history. I am now a college sophomore majoring in contemporary history and with us now talking about the holocaust I decided to Reread the book. Now that I am older and I know more about the history I enjoyed it more. It is such a heartbreaking story.
I feel as though I was taken there
Although the subject of this book is a difficult one, I am so glad I took the opportunity to listen to it. As Hannah is taken back to 1942, I felt as though I was taken with her. I was reminded, yet again, why we must remember.
    A good book
My Grand daughter ,who is 11 years old, and I read this book. It is a good book for both the young and the older to read
    Accurately read but distracting sounds.
Wonderful story telling. Great use of inflection throughout the story. Unfortunately, the sounds of the speakers mouth were distracting to me and I could hear an echo in the background. Otherwise, great narrating :)

The story of Jack Crabbe, raised by both a white man and a Cheyenne chief. As a Cheyenne, Jack ate dog, had four wives, and saw his people butchered by General Custer's soldiers. As a white man, he participated in the slaughter of the buffalo and tangled with Wyatt Earp.
    Members Reviews:
Classic yet fairly realistic tale of the old west
This is the story of Jack Crabb who's Cheyenne name is Little Big Man. It is told as a flashback of Jack as an 111yo man. It is an enjoyable recounting of the plains region circa 1850-1876 culminating in the battle of the Little Big Horn and Custer's last stand. The first half of the book is outstanding mainly focusing on Jack's time as a boy living with the Cheyenne after being adopted by the tribe. The descriptions of native american customs and lifestyle is realistically portrayed and quite interesting. Much is said about how native american ways and philosophy differs from "the whites". I always find this interesting to read about. The second half of the book is good but less interesting, sometimes being a tad long winded. There is a lot about frontier life and the life in early plains cities like St. Louis and Kansas City.
Narrator does an excellent job and gives the story an authentic feel.
5 stars for the first half of the book but 3 stars for the second half.
It's a Good Day to Listen
There is one quality in an audiobook that transcends all others, regardless of author, genre, subject, etc. That is when the voice in your ears surpasses any voice you could imagine in your head. Little Big Man is a tall tale almost entirely spun by former Old West frontiersman Jack Crabb as a 111-year-old man, so the narration is crucial, and Scott Sowers just totally, absolutely nails it, maintaining the idiosyncratic voice of his character for nearly 20 hours.
Jack Crabb was there. Everywhere. Raised by the Cheyenne after his father's wagon train was overrun, reclaimed by a white family as a teen, and in subsequent years: shopkeeper, muleskinner, trader, buffalo hunter, card sharp, gunslinger, prospector, dandy, town drunk, teamster, and ultimately scout. He returns several times to the Cheyenne to resume his role as legendary warrior Little Big Man. Along the way, he runs into people he met before, like General Custer, Wild Bill Hickok, Wyatt Earp, Calamity Jane, Buffalo Bill Cody, et.al. In the end, he is the only white man to survive the battle of Little Bighorn.
This is revisionist history. Published in 1964, Little Big Man was one of the first books about the West to take the point of view of the Indians, to show their lifestyle in a sympathetic light, explaining practices that would seem savage and primitive to white settlers. To the credit of Thomas Berger, he shows all viewpoints in all their complexity, but clearly emphasizes that one side, the native side, took the worst of it as the relentless tide of American expansionism overran their lands. He also takes some time to reexamine the image of women, blacks and homosexuals -- way ahead of his time on all fronts
This is one my favorite books (first read in the early 80s) by one of my favorite authors (read every one of his books), and the 1970 film version with Dustin Hoffman as Jack Crabb is one of my favorite movies.

my favorite of the grail quest series
I was sad to be done with this series. i totally enjoyed the narrator. I would like to read more of Thomas of Hookton tales
    enjoyed!
I'm not a huge fan of detailed sword and battle violence, but it did not significantly detract from the story for me. Loved the whole trilogy.
    very interesting historical fiction
great listen just like all his books, great mix of history and fiction, enjoyed it
    Rich and fierce
Another excellent novel by Cornwell. The history is well researched and the characters are captivating. As a Follower of Jesus who is often frustrated with the organized church, I appreciate the allusions to sincere faith being more broadly defined by a couple of medieval "heretics".
    Thomas of Hooktan
I seriously don't know where to begin & end praising Bernard Cornwells historical novels. This series has me as captivated as Uhtred of Bebbanburg. I love history especially historical wars before guns when everything was sheer strength & cunning. The man is a genius!!

Boring, Boring. I listened to the 1st five hours.
Something was lost in the translation. This book just never took off. I finally decided to just stop torturing myself. I have listened to some really good books. This is not one of them.
    If you love romance novels...
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If this book had been billed as a romance novel instead of historical fiction, I would have been informed enough to leave it on the shelf. I was mislead.
What could Petra Durst-Benning and Samuel Willcocks (translator) have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The translation was horribly anachronistic. I hope the original wasn't nearly as bad.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
If the narrator had said, "OMG, Beyonce just walked into the shop" I would not have been surprised. Her voice did not match the story and was annoying. She made a terrible story worse. I couldn't even finish it.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I stuck with it for a long time despite it's flaws, but when "mounds of Venus" was mentioned, I was out. The book had no redeeming qualities, except that it was a catalyst for researching glass in Lauscha.
    Any additional comments?
    Awful. Just awful.
    Fantastic!
There were zero reviews when I picked this book. I couldn't download a sample to listen. The cover was enticing. It was maybe a little bit slow in the very beginning but wow! After I got started, I couldn't quit listening. I'm going to look for the next book in the series.
    Good book
I looked the book. I just don't care for sex scenes being so graphic. That is why I gave it a lower star rating.
Can't wait till book 2 comes out on audible
Where does The Glassblower rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It ranks pretty high , I loved the story.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Marie , because she didn't conform to how society told her to live.
What does Kristin Watson Heintz bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The interaction between the sisters. If I was just reading it wouldn't have been so lively.

"There is nothing hidden that will not be revealed...."
On a brisk autumn day in 1686, 18-year-old Nella Oortman arrives in Amsterdam to begin a new life as the wife of illustrious merchant trader Johannes Brandt. But her new home, while splendorous, is not welcoming. Johannes is kind yet distant, always locked in his study or at his warehouse office - leaving Nella alone with his sister, the sharp-tongued and forbidding Marin.
But Nellas world changes when Johannes presents her with an extraordinary wedding gift: a cabinet-sized replica of their home. To furnish her gift, Nella engages the services of a miniaturist - an elusive and enigmatic artist whose tiny creations mirror their real-life counterparts in eerie and unexpected ways...
Enchanting, beautiful, and exquisitely suspenseful, The Miniaturist is a magnificent story of love and obsession, betrayal and retribution, appearance and truth.

Magical Historical Story of Secrets and Misery
Really well written book. It made me sad to read, but kept me fascinated with the magic and history and characters. It's a book about secrets and more secrets. And as each of the secrets came to be revealed more and more trouble fell upon the characters. I truly didn't want the story to end...I could have followed these characters infinitely.
    Too Many Holes
Burton gives us a novel set in 17th century Amsterdam, a booming mercantile center. Young Nella has arrived from the country, newly married, only to find that her husband Johannes is away on business and that her harsh sister-in-law, Marin, rules the roost. When he returns, he presents her with a wedding gift that he believes will keep her busy: a cabinet designed like their house, but empty. It's Nella's task to fill it, and she contacts by mail a miniaturist to create the first pieces. When the package arrives, there are additional, unordered pieces that are astonishingly identical to reality. How does the miniaturist know so much about the Brandt home? Even more strangely, some of the figures representing the family start to change . . . and Nella begins to feel that she is living in a house of secrets.
This novel was really slow-going at first, so slow that I almost gave up on it. While I'm glad that I stuck with it to the end, there were a number of problems. First, we never really learn exactly who the miniaturist is or how she knows so much. At times, Nella seems almost too naive, and she and other characters change far too abruptly to be believable. The ending--well, lets just say that we're somewhat left hanging. While it feels like a conclusion, again, there are just too many holes
    Fell Short
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Not sure who would enjoy this. It was scattered and clumsy.
What do you think your next listen will be?
    Don't know
What didnt you like about Davina Porters performance?
She lost track of who was who.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. Lack everything and tried too hard to encompass so much, but fell very short on all accounts.
    Any additional comments?
I tried to be hopeful that the book would get better.

Oliver Twist is one of the most well-known stories ever told, about a young orphan who has to survive the mean streets of London before ultimately being rescued by a kindly benefactor.
But it is his friend, the Artful Dodger, who has the far more intriguing tale, filled with more adventure and excitement than anything boring Oliver could possibly get up to. Throw in some vampires and a plot to overthrow the British monarchy, and what you have is the thrilling account that Charles Dickens was too scared to share with the world.
From the brilliant mind of novelist and comic book veteran Peter David, Artful is the dark, funny, and action-packed story of one of the most fascinating characters in literary history.
    With vampires.

The best of a weird genre
I didn't like Pride and Prejudices and Zombies -- strictly a one-trick pony. After the first hour or so, you'd already heard all the jokes so after that it was just silly and boring. I'm also one of the three people on the planet who hated Wicked. Since then I've tended to avoid books that re-envision characters from stories I liked just fine in the original.
Now this, on the other hand, shows how it CAN be done. The Artful, as our hero is usually called, is a delightful young "gentleman" and the other characters, many of whom will be familiar to the reader, are wonderfully woven into an adventure/fantasy that takes us on a joy ride through London circa 1835. It wold be hard to say more without spoilers -- let's just say the suspense is maintained right up to the end. Okay, one almost-spoiler: I loved what the author did with that syrupy-sweet Oliver!
As for the plot, well I don't suppose you could ever call a novel in the "fictional-character-revisited-in-an-alternate-universe" genre believable, so let's just say that in this case the plot "holds together".
The narration is spot-on. The only other James Langton book I remember listening to was non-fiction; I'm going to look for some more of his.
The Artful Dodger and the Vampyres
I'm not really a fan of classic literature but I do enjoy "alternate history" and this is sort of an alternate history of a classic fictional story. As such, the language and writing style took a little while to get behind and it was quite a few chapters before I felt "invested" in the story, but overall I feel the author did a good job capturing the classical feel in his writing, although I do agree with some other reviewers that he thinks himself a bit too clever at times. That feeling usually came across the strongest when the author was expressing the thoughts of a certain horse or of himself as the narrator of this tale.
I received this book from Amazon as part of their Kindle First program so I didn't actually read the entire synopsis before I started reading the book. Had I known initially that this was a vampire tale I wouldn't have picked it up. However, to me, the vampires are really just a sub-plot (even though they are presented as the main plot) and are presented as the foil against which the true character of the Artful Dodger and company are revealed.
The story isn't groundbreaking. It isn't really even anything new, but it's well told and ultimately enjoyable. I highly recommend adding the Audible narration to your purchase if you are into that sort of thing.

A very good audiobook to listen to in SPANISH!!!
Where does Dime Quién Soy rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I've read (listened to) a lot of books (audiobooks), and this is a good choice if you want to listen to something good in Spanish.I rank this audiobook in the top ten list of audiobooks in Spanish (Fron the options you find in Audible)I strongly recommend Audible to keep on improving the catalog of books in other languages (Spanish, French, Italian).
What other book might you compare Dime Quién Soy to and why?
Es una novela con alto contenido histórico, por lo que aunque sin ser novela histórica como tal, lo compararía con obras de Colleen McCullough o Santiago Posteguillo que desafortunadamente no hacen parte de la propuesta de Audible para libros en español.
What about Daniel Albiac and María Belén Roca s performance did you like?
A very good production!Buena voz, sin aburridor sonido de fondo tipo radio-novela de los 60's
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    Any additional comments?
I recommend this audiobook for those who are looking for a good book in Spanish.
