Stop and Go

What disappointed you about Historia de las independencias [The History of Independence]?

The narrative, just like the voice of the author, is a challenge to any but the most throroughly prepared reader: The audiobook is full of repetitions of key words, sentences and facts. Part of that is due to the original structure (several CDs), but part of it seems like sloppy editing.

Would you ever listen to anything by Diana Uribe again?

This was my third Audiobook by Diana Uribe. I LOVED "100 momentos que marcaron el mundo contemporáneo" and enjoyed "Historia de las civilizationes", which shares some of this book's drawbacks, but to a lesser degree. Diana Uribe is worth reading and listening to, but this is not her best work by far.

What didnt you like about Diana Uribes performance?

Not only does Diana Uribe tell her story, she LIVES it. While I enjoyed this in her other works, I found it unpleasant here: she often speeds up during passages she seems to find exciting, making it excruciatingly difficult to understand her (unless you are very familiar with the Columbian variety of Spanish)... especially proper names are sometimes incomprehensible, making it nearly impossible to follow the narrative. Furthermore, the author sometime becomes very loud, SHOUTING A FEW WORDS for no apparent reason. This is both painful and annoying, so after 2/3 of the audiobook I gave up.

Any additional comments?

Fewer repetitions, a strictly chronological approach and more background information would have made the audiobook much more enjoyable, but the most important improvement here would be a professional narrator - or a more professional performance on the part of the author.

One of the most important and memorable events of the United States' westward push across the frontier came with the discovery of gold, in the lands that became California, in January 1848. It brought an influx of an estimated 90,000 "Forty-Niners" to the region in 1849, hailing from other parts of America and even as far away as Asia. In a span of months, San Francisco's population exploded, making it one of the first mining boomtowns to truly spring up in the West.

At this time, the colonists and colonial forces were still unclear of their ultimate goals; the Second Continental Congress would not formally declare independence for another year.

During the first few months of the fighting, the British tried on several occasions to lift the siege with force, and the most memorable attempt was what became known as the Battle of Bunker Hill. On June 17, 1775, the British Navy fired on Charlestown from the Charles River and then landed an estimated 3,000 British regulars on the peninsula.

This is not the usual jumble of facts written done by the authors as they pop into their heads but then it is a fairly simple subject and thats the way they treat it...simple.

Fairly informative...

I've read many books on the subject of Bunker Hill & this book is on par with others in setting the stage for the Revolution. I recommend it for Revolutionary War buffs, but don't expect any profound new information on the subject.

Not Everything I hoped For But...

Not Everything I hoped For But... I was expecting more grit and bones to this book. Failed to see (when I bought it) that it was only 52 minutes. So, a good overview, but look elsewhere if you wanted a in-depth history, as I was, because you ain't getting it here.Otherwise, a tidy and small look at the Iroquois Confederacy.

Meh...

the narration seemed rushed and flat. the information contained was good, but it lacked warmth and enthusiasm.

Probably. Hard to tell if it is the narrator or producer/director or the script.

Too much minutiae, awful narration

I love reading everything I can on this war because it is politically and sociologically fascinating. I really wanted to like this book. However, the extraordinarily boring narrator, coupled with such tedious detail down to which window, what caliber bullet hit, finally wore me down. I've gotten through a 3rd of it but each time end up shouting 'No mas!' So disappointing.

A wonderful summary of THE RESIDENCE

Inspired by the British TV show, Downtown Abbey, journalist Kate Anderson Brower wrote "The Residence" based on the "upstairs-downstairs dynamic" of the White House. Yes, she got to speak with some of the servants who worked there, going all the way back to JFK! In this detailed summary/review by Eureka Books of the original book, we learn that this is not a 'tell-all' as staff are/were loyal and committed to protecting the privacy of those they are/were serving. Kate also interviewed first ladies and children. Is a job working in the White House all glamorous? No! The hours can be long causing hardships/divorce for the families involved. However romance does happen between the staff once in a while.

This Eureka summary gives us a fascinating look into behind the scenes. There are eleven 'Main Character' bios which includes both staff and first families. In 'Character Relationships' who were they perfect couple? Who was the pickiest First Lady? The 'Themes' section covers discretion, daily life, penny pinching and more. Yes, even some of the presidents have had to live under a budget!

In the 'Author's Style' Eureka describes the original as being one that can be hard to follow due to so many tellers. Eureka questions "the main assertion that little has been revealed by White House staffers" due to previous tell-alls. They finish by saying that "readers expecting 'The Help meets Downtown Abbey' may be disappointed".

This is an excellent summary which may well be very enlightening to some. Book provided in exchange for honest review. Thanks, Liz

Deceptive Cover--This is not the book, The Residence

Beware that this is not the entire book. It is a REVIEW of The Residence. I thought I was purchasing the book which was on sale at another website for the same low price as this review of the book. Therefore I was very disappointed when I finished reading it in less than 30 minutes. Although this is a nice review, don't be fooled into purchasing something that looks like the book at first glance, but isn't.

The name Anasazi came from their enemies; it is a Navajo word that means "enemy ancestor". While that name understandably continues to offend the descendants of the Anasazi, it also underscores that there is still a lot of uncertainty regarding the history of the Anasazi. It is still unclear what the Anasazi called themselves, and though they resided near the "Four Corners" area of Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico for more than 700 years, they mysteriously abandoned their settlements shortly after they truly began to flourish around AD 1050-1150.

Marvelous Book....

well written, engaging and well researched, this is a book that will show you that the more things change, the more things stay the same. The same issues we face today, race, the economy, immigrants and freedom of speech, have been the bugbears of the American government from its inception. This is a fine account of the political struggles of the time.

Absolutely! This is they type of book that should be taught in law classes. The history lesson is invaluable.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The entire story is a fascinating look into how this country was formed and a discussion as to the first amendment to the constitution. It also shows how little has changed in 200 years.

I was shocked by this book. I loved this book it was so detailed on explaining a history that I did not know about before. I learned a lot about the First Amendment.

An. excellent story very well told. Subject matter at first look might be a turnoff BUT don't take the bait as it's a FANTASTIC story. Well written with excellent narration. A must listen. After listening to this book, I purchase a hard copy for my personal library.
