Every February a few seconds of the video are shown again and Spaniards congratulate themselves for standing up for democracy, but Cercas says that things were very quiet that afternoon and evening while all over Spain people stayed inside waiting for the coup to be defeated ...or to triumph.

Failed coup in another country can be fascinating

Warning: stick with this for at least an hour. It is slow at the beginning. But once Cercas gets rolling you are enthralled with his character studies and his explorations of heroism, statesmanship, politics, and democracy.

The framework for this analysis is the failed coup of February 23, 1981 in Spain. The country is just settling, uneasily, into democracy after forty years of Franco. The economy is failing, ETA (Basque terrorists) are bombing regularly, and those with power: the military, the church, the wealthy and priveleged under Franco, are unhappy with Adolfo Suarez, who they put in place to retain the core of Francoism while putting on the trappings of a democracy for public consumption. Surprise. Suarez took his assignment seriously and rapidly drove through a full democratic architecture; he even legalized the Communist party.

So several generals decide, for the good of the country, to overthrow Suarez. The military bursts into the Cortes (the legislative chambers) and starts shooting. As everyone else drops to the ground, Suarez and two of his unlikely collaborators in creating a democracy stay upright. Cercas asks why they stayed standing and what it meant. The book is a wonderful set of character studies of these men and the plotters, set against Spains recent history.

The writing is very skilled. Cercas uses rhetorical devices such as repetition of phrases (ironic or otherwise), symmetry, etc. to bring art to history. The rhetoric brings a rhythm and sense of music to the story, carrying the reader along.

Very highly recommended. Also, the narrator speaks both English and Spanish so all the names and places are pronounced correctly (I presume--sounds right to me).

History as a novel

Puritans may disagree with the liberties Javier Cercas, a novelist, takes with these real events and the way he gets into the minds of these real characters. It is not pure history.

a good, if liberally biased, over view of the age

Gibson's fiction is fantastic and his relation of economic conditions to the modern reader are good (for instance relating the rail building boom and busy to the recent .com bubble) but he applies a pretty significant modern liberal bias to the activities of the people of that era which doesn't belong in a history.

His style is easy to follow and the narrator is very easy to listen to.

Overall I found the experience of the book good.

Really, really good - this book is special

It listens wonderfully, picks interesting sources and is thought provoking.

What lifts this above many other good history books is the vast amount of information, all of which is interesting.

Too many dates

Historic dates are fair enough but every time a name is mentioned, no matter how fleeting or how obscure their Birth and death date gets read out. Really got in the way of the narrative.

Not as good as the previous volume because of it.

Too much irrelevant detail (minor characters, birth and death dates where not pertinent to the story, chatty asides, etc) and too little synthesis or insight. Weak on the important cultural and literary events of the period, and, more importantly, one also misses analysis of major policies, foreign policy and the like. It is as though the author has trouble distinguishing what would be useful in a short introduction from what would not.

The Historical Arthur

This is clearly a well researched work on the historical Arthur. I would highly recommend it if you are already well versed in early Arthurian history and have a fascination with dates and lineages. It can be a lot to process though for a reader with mearly a passing interest.

an interesting book, but maybe not what you think

Would you consider the audio edition of A Brief History of King Arthur to be better than the print version?

Yes, i could see the print book of this being quite dry. Although it may be easier to keep track of places, people and dates having them visually. But the narrator's enthusiasm keeps you interested.

i don't know any friends who are interested in King Arthur, but then nor was I, so I suppose yes, I would.

What about Mark Meadowss performance did you like?

Mr Meadows reas, what is essentially a dry list of dates, names and incidents with clarity and importantly, emotion. what could be very dull is turned into something that keeps you engaged.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It's a fact based book so there is little emotional connection although you do get drawn into the 'quest for Arthur' and curiosity is definitely aroused.

Any additional comments?

This book is an investigation of the time period, people, places and documents of the Arthurian legend (note not the romantic/fantasy Arthur, but the real Arthur that those legends are based on). The book explores the various historical records, folk tales and legends and distills facts from each that can be verified, theories that can be supported and flights of fancy or coincidences where necessary. the first 3 quarters of the book is a compilation of these different records including people, battles, places etc. It's tough going but has some interesting insights into the time period and how Britain was broken up.

However the last quarter brings everything you've heard previously into focus as the various 'Arthurs' are investigated, compared to the details you have heard and leaves you with enough background to draw your own conclusions. The author presents his own, compelling conclusion, but this is not a book of answers, it's more the background necessary to ask questions.

Just be prepared to be patient for the payoff of the information overload of the first parts of the book.

Useful though not exciting

Yes, but only if the friend already has a real interest in history

The reading was a bit dull; the voice is too deep for my taste, but that is of course personal.

Probably not.

To me, the best thing about this book are the references to recent scholarship and research. It is extremely interesting and important to have an idea of how views of particular subjects and periods have evolved.

excellent history, balanced perspective

This is a superb history of the momentous era from before Henry VIII to after Elizabeth. The author also presents other historians' views, which changed sometimes dramatically over time based on the latest scholarship and trends. Religion and finance (economy) are two important areas that benefit greatly from balanced perspectives. This clear combination of current and historical scholarship is very interesting and helps the reader understand also how history is analyzed.

Interesting and engaging

There's not much about on the Tudors and English Civil War - this covers both: Brings us up to date with historical thinking; tells the story of each monarch, and I was left feeling invigorated, engaged, and edified!

Broad View

I'm not a historian but read and listen to a lot of books on history - mainly European and especially British. For me this book helped as a review and reminder of events which is always useful for retaining the information. The book served as review while feeling really fresh and interesting and went at a good pace. I also enjoyed Hutton's references to the way history is written and understood in different ages.

A bit too brief

I know, brief is right there in the title. However, there's a lot of History of Britain between 1485 and 1660, and this isn't a long book.

I had no idea how bleak these times were in the UK

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Anyone interested in recent UK history, absolutely essential listening or reading. Especially for non-British listeners/readers who have no memory of the events and times.

What did you like best about this story?

It seems comprehensive- from Whitehall on down to the Yorkshire mine strikers and every middle-class concern in between. It covers gov't policies on wages and taxes, social movements like feminism and immigration, and pop cultural moments such as Bowie, Rising Damp and A Clockwork Orange in an equally entertaining manner. Despite the utter bleakness of energy shutdowns, general strikes, and stagflation there always seems to be light at the end of the tunnel.

It also helped me understand a lot of the Monty Python sketches I saw as a kid. They'd reference British politicians like Heath or Maudling, often using them as punchlines. I wouldn't get the joke but I'd laugh anyway b/c they were just that funny and I figured I'd get it someday. Or when Eric Idle had to read copy by candlelight wrapped around a blanket.

AMAZING BOOK, A GREAT READ

An incredibly interesting book even if you are not interested in history. A very easy enjoyable read. Book arrived in "like new" condition and service was professional. Haven't finished the book yet but, have not encountered one boring page. Research is amazing.

quite a good read bogged down in some places but all up enjoyable and informative

Insightful, Informative and very Ineresting.

Robert Lacey delivers a text that is Insightful, informative and very interesting. From the narratives of the artwork from the Julius Work Calender to the descriptions of having war in the fall since Spring & Summer were growing and harvesting times while Winter was too cold! The crazy bread times were very amusing, sad and explained to myself how possibly Henry VI went Mad and then recovered as was the case of King George III. This is a must read for anyone interested in Pre William {Engla Lond}. To be continued.

What life was like in the year 1000 (in Europe)

This is a very readable book chock full of interesting information. You can really put yourself in the time and place to "experience" life in the year 1000. The food, the clothing, the social, political climate and the family endeavors. I would also recommend this for youngsters. Especially, Jr. High and High School. This is a great way to realize what life was like without cellphones, laptops, ipads, xbox and MacDonalds!! It seems to me that it was a very hardscrabble life and every year one managed to stay alive was some kind of little "miracle".

Great for an introduction to life of the day. Easy reading and nice flow.

This is a nice, light easy reading book with lots of interesting trivia. Opens up the world of year 1000. Not an in depth study, but the layout worked well to tie together many facets of their lives. For just general knowledge I would definitely recommend this book.

Superb!

One of the best Audible books I've had over the past 5 years. Amusing, informative and throughly engaging. Simon Elmes knows his stuff, writes with intelligence and imagination and reads in an easy and imaginative way. It is a must-listen for any wireless fan!

A lovely listen

I really enjoyed this. Simon Elmes reads very well and he is a good mimic of the characters he discusses.

Lots of nostalgia and very informative.Highly recommended.

Sound without voices

This is a fascinating story, well told. Elmes has a light touch and an eye for well-chosen examples. The problem with this reading, however, is that it lacks the original recordings. Elmes is not a talented impersonator, so there is only so much that he can convey via a description of the vocal delivery and the way in which different lengths of pause are indicated by the number of dots left in the printed quote. Clearly, this is an audiobook, so it is constrained by being a vocal version of the book, but you will end up feeling that something is lacking and wondering how it might have been conveyed differently.

Any additional comments?

The repetitive nature of the excerpts sort of works and I enjoyed the listen. The list of characters can get overwhelming but like War and Peace just keep going and the necessary bits fall into place. Downloaded after listening to "Desert Island Discs" which is a similar theme on the history of one radio programme.

Roman Britain

If you want a very good book on the Romans occupation of Great Britain then this is it. It is really great as an audio book. The narrations are easy to understand and grasp. Highly recommended.

Romans Reconsidered

Guy de la Beydoyere is a great guide to the Romans in Britain. By co-opting a horde of modern experts and academics, each aspect of the Roman occupation is given a new lease of life, from buildings to trade and religion. Clearly the subject is greater than a three hour programme can properly cover, but this was three hours well spent.

A good listen

This BBC radio series is a good and informative look at the Romans in Britain.

Good introduction to the French Revolution. Easy to read and understand. Excellent job with a complex topic. Other volumes are very stodgy.
