The whole story of King John and 1215!

Dan Jones style of mixing the minute details of a peasants lot in 1215 with that of a knights experience of a medieval siege is what makes this book such an wonderful history to read/ listen to.

Any lover of the Middle Ages will throughly enjoy this book, as will a general reader wanting to know a bit more about the great charter itself.

Despite reading the book it when it was first released, I still found listening to this audiobook two years later a fascinating journey back into 1215!

A real page turner! Enjoy.

Half a book

In the introduction to this book Dan Jones explains that this picture of everyday life in the reign of King John represents the material he couldn't work into his earlier book on Magna Carta. Plenty of other historians manage to combine major historical events with day to day detail but I plugged on at least partly as a result of a very favourable review in the Daily Telegraph of 12th November 2015 by Toby Clements and a very engaging slot on the 15th October 2015 BBC History Today podcast. Having listened to a Realm Divided; which clocks in at just over 5 hours and checked the unabridged running time of Magna Carta (3 hours and 21 minutes) I think he would have been better to combine them into one book of decent length. This has some nice details but it's too short to represent acceptable value and the structure's all over the place. It still reads like left over notes for another book. If you haven't listened Ian Mortimer's "Time Travellers Guide to Medieval England"; "England; Arise" by Juliet Barker; "King John" by Marc Morris or the mighty "Distant Mirror" by Barbara Tuchman then give this a swerve and buy with one of those instead

Much More Than A Book About A House

The thing I liked best about this book was the way that you hear all about the historical setting to each part of the 'story'. Each Mistress who lived in Cliveden is set in the context of the history to that era - social, economic and especially political history. It really did bring the story to life - and so of course, an awful lot of the book does not happen at Cliveden and often had nothing to do with the house, which was not what I was expecting but it worked so well.

I was far more gripped by the more recent eras of the house - the last one was really Nancy Astor and this was by far the most interesting to me. I thought I admired her (first female MP etc) but it turns out she was a fascinating but rather nasty piece of work with ingrained antisemitic views, among other unpleasant things!

The narration was excellent. Just familiar enough, as if you are being confided in, not over-acted by the brilliant C Boyd (Linda Snell, The Archers).

Very impressive!

Thoroughly entertaining and well researched narrative, which flows very smoothly, thanks to the melodious tones of the reader. I've read widely on the subject yet there was more to learn here. The book combines erudition and humour very cleverly and is clearly written from the heart.

A Delightful Romp through Scandal and History

A great listen!!!! If you like your history with more personal insight to its protagonists then this book is for you. An engaging and interesting listen

I really enjoyed this but no I wouldn't listen to it again. I would read it though. The house itself has a wonderful history and it's fascinating to hear about it, but the narrator seems to be trying to turn it into some kind of drama - swooping and emoting all over the place.

Tough subject!

Very difficult to listen to but important in understanding what happened in 1941. Narration was excellent.

So bad I stopped listening

What disappointed you about The Crime and the Silence?

I couldn't figure out when things were happening. The narrative kept jumping back and forth like the author couldn't decide how to organize the story.

Would you be willing to try another one of David Stifels performances?

I would be willing to listen to another of Stifel's performances. He wasn't the best narrator ever, but he was pretty good.

I really wanted to like this book and was looking forward to listening to it. I almost never quit on a book, but after 3 hours, I stopped listening. I couldn't follow what was going on or when things were happening. I think the book would have been better without all of the jumping back and forth in time.

Unbelieveable

The writer disappoints on every level. A dry recitation of facts. No context, no color, and no characters developed. Boring enough to make you sleep through a train wreck. It's not as bad as it could be, the book is short enough that any damage incurred from reading it is likely to be temporary. The book is published by --- Make Profits Easy LLC. Wow. 210 pages with big font size, double spaced, triple space between paragraphs, big indents at paragraphs and about 22 lines per page. No right justify of text along with no hyphenation combine to create even more white space. My copy of text has a two letter white strip down the length of the odd number page from page 5 through page 115. The quality of the printing matched the writing.

The only redeeming feature I can discern is that it is a very quick read (not many words to read).

I realize I may not be entirely correct in my assessment of this piece of work, it could be even worse than I have indicated.

I was disappointed.

It lacks of deepth. It looks more like a book for childdren than a book for adults.

A rip-off

This book is very poorly written and offers nothing new concerning the subject of the British Empire. I can think of no good reason to recommend the book to anyone.

This was an interesting read!! Tracing the history of one of the most powerful empires, it is packed full of detail. It moves from different continents to show the influence and power that such as small country held across the globe. this book was very well written and had a bunch of info i never learned about in school. the best part is the area on the brits controlling east and west Africa in my opinion. recommended.

Hitler: The Rug-Chewing Actor

Hitler, the rug-chewing actor. This might have been an alternative title of the book. It seems like Hitler is an actor who has gone amok, and egged on by this propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels. While reading the book, I was constantly reminded of Charlie Chaplin in the "Great Dictator" bouncing his inflated globe until it finally burst. The parallel seemed amazingly appropriate. Unfortunately for the world, Hitler was not the comedic character but rather a asocial charlatan, His obsession with Richard Wagner and "DIe Gotterdammerung" was especially revealing. The prophecy detailed in this last opera of the Ring Cycle most certainly came to pass. If Hitler, as master of the world, went down,then he would take the world with him. This book is an excellent and easy read, and I would recommend it for those persons interested in the psyche of Adolf Hitler.

I liked the book. My husband and I watched many of the documentaries that he quotes in the book. Enjoyed reading the book.
