Learn about the history of Times Square in New York with iMinds Travel's insightful fast knowledge series. Times Square stands proudly in the centre of New York City. Broadway meets Seventh Avenue in a place where tourists meet and fall in love with New York. The bright lights and billboards that seem to stretch on forever are just part of what makes Times Square so famous and so attractive. It is also the centre of New Yorks famous Broadway theatre district and is the place where millions of people come together to bring in the New Year.
Times Square makes up most of the western midtown Manhattan area. In the 1800s the area was known as Longacre Square. It housed horse exchanges and stables, carriage factories, blacksmiths shops and upscale brothels. In 1904, The New York Times moved in and established one of the tallest buildings in the city. The newspaper convinced the city to create a subway stop there and to rename the area Times Square. When the new building was opened on 31 December 1904, the newspaper celebrated by holding a public New Years Eve celebration in the square, complete with fireworks. This tradition is still carried on today. So the New York Times had a significant part in the making of Times Square. Yet it was another publication that brought the drama to the square.

Learn about the history of the Colosseum in Rome with iMinds Travel's insightful fast knowledge series. Two thousand years ago the mighty Roman Empire spanned most of Europe, Asia Minor and North Africa. At its heart was the capital city of Rome, the city to which all roads led. Inside this city, the great ruins of the Colosseum are a lasting reminder of the majesty of this great empire. But the gigantic sports arena that is the Colosseum also reveals a dark side of ancient Rome. For the arenas purpose was as a ground for gladiatorial combat. And in its wildly popular four-hundred-year history, the Colosseum would witness the deaths of thousands of humans and animals.
The Colosseum was built by the Emperor Vespasian between 72 and 80AD. It was built from Travertine stone and its builders were brought to Rome from Judaea. After a revolt in Judaea was suppressed by the Roman government, a large amount of Jews were brought to Rome as slaves to construct the arena. Vespasian had it built in the grounds of the Domus Aurea, or Golden House. The Golden House was built by the emperor Nero in the first century. It was actually a collection of many buildings over a great area. The ruins of many of these can still be visited today on the Esquiline Hill next to the Colosseum. Vespasian belonged to the Flavian dynasty, and so the Colosseum was originally called the Flavian Amphitheatre.

    Publisher's Summary:
Learn about the history of the Pantheon in Rome with iMinds Travel's insightful fast knowledge series. Which Roman building has been used as a military fortress, a Christian church, and a fish and vegetable market during the course of its long life? The answer is the Pantheon, whose majestic columns and magnificent dome ensure its place as one of Romes most impressive architectural feats. Its ability to be transformed to suit different religions and cultures has ensured it has lasted for millennia.
Firstly, the Pantheon is an awesome reminder of Romes ancient past. It comes from the Greek words pan, meaning all, and theos, meaning god. So it started life as a monument built to all Roman gods. And it was one of the most sacred places in the city in Roman times, with impressive white-marble statues of Jupiter and Minerva once standing there. Visitors today find a Pantheon that is in on lower ground to its surrounds. But it was originally built on level ground. This just shows how much ancient rubble the city of Rome is built on today! Marcus Agrippa built the first Pantheon in 27BC. But the version we see today was constructed by the Emperor Hadrian between 118 and 125AD. Hadrians building may have replaced Agrippas, but he paid homage to the former patron, with a Latin plaque that translates to M. Agrippa made this. Both ancient buildings were temples to the Roman gods, but this purpose of the Pantheon was not to last.

This'll help you get around Rome without actually knowing any Greek.
Rome's a terrific area to visit. There's so much interesting history, but it'll be tough to get by without speaking some Greek! Fortunately, I purchased this book, and I feel comfortable speaking with street vendors and guides with the phrases provided. The phrases are accurate, and they're tailored to travelers. Very worth it!

It's very short and doesn't have much that you can't easily find anywhere else
This is a very short, pamhlet-like booklet. It's very short and doesn't have much that you can't easily find anywhere else.
It's very small-ness means that it could easily fit into your pocket while you're out - but if you have a phone and can Google "free stuff in London" you don't need this.
Keep your money in your pocket!
Interested in going to London, but on a very strict budget? Have no fear- this book is here! While it is not exactly free money, it is a great way to save money. This book contains a variety of ways to have fun in London without breaking the bank. If you like having money in your pocket, this is a very worthwhile purchase.
    Meh
I bought this as part of a gift for someone, and while it does have some helpful info, it's pretty flimsy. It's basically a self-published booklet.

    Never received the book
Not bad if you haven't Googled the city
Not a bad list but it wasn't anything I hadn't discovered on my first round of Google search (1hour). The web links are appreciated but the formatting was awkward. Some things that were set up as cost: free said in the blurb they were only free with ... (a meal or pass). I don't know from reading if this person traveled to Paris, lives there or just researched online for these things.
    It is what it says
Some good info not found elsewhere. I loved the links. Hotel suggestion are questionable, I found cheaper through hotel.com and Bookit.com
    Good Discount Tips
This book had some good tips on deals. A little something for everyone's interests. Looking forward to checking out the deals.
