A heartfelt, true story of a kayaker's life and a mother's loss
I thank the author for giving us the gift of this book. I met Dave Norell and kayaked with him once in Idaho during my travels in 2001. He is one of several kayakers I met during those years who are no longer with us. I can identify with many aspects of his broke, hungry, and happy life, but I could never imagine the pain of losing one's son at the age of 25. Ann Norell has given us a labor of love in this book. Through the simple, factual details of Dave's magnificent life, unexpected death from a congenital heart defect, and her own grief and mourning, Ann Norell has revealed so much about the human condition and the dreams, pleasures, and losses that every person must face at different times of their lives. Although the story has a sad ending, it is full of joy and left me thankful for my life, the adventures I have had, and the people I have met along the way. I recommend this book to everyone.
Finding the meaning of life
The book about the life of "Dangerous Dave Norell" is amazing and inspiring - a must read for all Kayakers and for non-kayakers, like myself. It's a story of passion and a commitment to a joy in living. Dave Norell's metaphorical life story answers the question: 'What is the meaning of life.' Tragically only 24 when he died, his passion for Kayaking must have begun the moment he was born. Later that passion became his life as a world class 'extreme kayaker.' He wrote, for example, about how he became a man at age 15: "Becoming a man . . . [meant] tackling Class V." He did that on Easter in 1994 on the "Milner Section of the Snake River . . . described in guidebooks as the most powerful Class V in Idaho . . .. [The 'enormous' Milner] was pumping at an incredible 20,000 cfs that day." The book is filled with his risk-taking worldwide explorations and accomplishments not only as a world-class extreme kayaker but also as prolific filmmaker of his own and others' death-defying exploits. He writes that in one of his videos, he is even both the paddler and the videographer.
