    Title: The N Word
Subtitle: Who Can Say It, Who Shouldn't, and Why
    Author: Jabari Asim
    Narrator: Mirron Willis
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 24 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-26-07
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 28 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
In 2003, the book Nigger started an intense conversation about the uses and implications of that epithet. The N Word moves beyond that short, provocative book by revealing how the word has both reflected and spread the scourge of bigotry in America.
Asim claims that even when uttered by hipsters and hip-hop icons, the slur helps keep blacks at the bottom of America's socioeconomic ladder. But he also proves there is a place for this word in the mouths and on the pens of those who truly understand its twisted history: from Mark Twain to Dave Chappelle to Mos Def. Only when we know its legacy can we loosen this slur's grip on our national psyche.
    Critic Reviews:
    "Clear, engaging writing." (Publishers Weekly)
"Informed, sensible and impassioned." (Kirkus Reviews)
"He is most eloquent when relating how African Americans have been characterized in our culture; how the word nigger has been employed to oppress, belittle, dismiss, humiliate, and ridicule black people; and how they themselves have increasingly used it to satirize and oppose that oppression." (Library Journal)

It was painful to get though but I am hopeful for the word to come as a black man

An interesting read about the not-so-dark ages
Medieval Science will blow the dust off of a few of those cob-webbed corners left over from everything you've been taught to believe about the dark ages. Not only is the work interesting in it's own right, as an exposition about science in an age where I was taught there was nothing but dirt, death and bad dental hygiene, but also interesting because, through it, I discovered greater and deeper links between East, Middle East and West, far more and far more interesting than just those my (north) American education would have me understand. AND... it's a good read too!
enjoyed it, a littls to much performance for me,
good content. a little over performed for me. I had to rewind frequently to understand. I would have enjoyed it just as well without the change ups in early English dialecs.
    Very Interesting
This is a brief, but enlightening factual compilation of individual accounts of science, invention, and religion during the medieval period.
    Antiquated and outdated, choose other
laughably outdated and biased, great narration and performance but could not save source material. Heavily biased in favor of antiquated views on the source of several technologies and strays far from the topic at several points
    The roots of modern science
This is an outstanding presentation on the sources of modern science.
It well depicts the transition from mere belief to reasoning and experimental science. Of special note is the presaging of Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

    Author: Lynne Truss
    Narrator: Lynne Truss
    Format: Abridged
Length: 1 hr and 56 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-15-05
    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 39 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
When did "please" and "thank you" become passe? When you call a "customer service" number, why does the burden of deciphering the automatic switchboard fall to you (and where are the real people, when you, the customer, need service)? Why do people behave as if public spaces are their own chip-strewn living rooms? Perhaps most importantly, how has it come to be that we are not allowed to object? Call someone out on rude or disrespectful behavior and you're likely to get an "Eff off" or worse.
In a recent U.S. survey, 79 percent of adults said that lack of courtesy was a serious problem. For all of those fed up with anti-social behavior and suffering in silence, realize that you are the majority! Talk to the Hand is a colorful call to arms from the wittiest defender of the civilized world.
    Critic Reviews:
"Truss expounds on these themes with fine ire, mordant humor, and many examples." (Publishers Weekly)
"Ms. Truss's witty analysis and fussbudget tactics [are] contagious." (The New York Times)
    Members Reviews:
    Civility Wherefore Art Thou?
Ms. Truss gives her view of the lack of civility in our society today. I agree with her much of the time. I also feel like shutting my apartment door and not going outside many times. Wry sense of humor along with truths. I didn''t realize that England was uncivil, too, not just urban areas of the U.S.
    Down with rudeness!
Lynne Truss has another winner. Hitting the nail on the head regarding rudeness in the world today. Some may think it pedantic, but someone has to speak to the problem which is rife in today's society. Also, her witty writing is great fun to read. Bravo, Lynne.
    Oh, wow!
First, let me say that I owned a business for twenty years, dealing with the public. I've experienced what I thought to be every single sort of bazaar, abusive, boorish, and/or laughable behavior both face-to-face and on the phone. I've also worked with the public in the tourism industry. I can tell you for a fact that they don't act any better when on vacation.
Talk to the Hand: The Utter Bloody Rudeness of the World Today, or Six Good Reasons to Stay Home and Bolt the Door by Lynne Truss has renewed my faith in myself! NO! I am not the only person to be driven around the bend by what passes as manners today.
I'm so glad that I've discovered Ms. Truss's book, if only in psychic self-defense! Brava!
    Thumping the Table
I loved EATS, SHOOTS AND LEAVES and lined right up for Lynne Truss's new book, TALK TO THE HAND. What I valued about the book on grammar was its unwavering attack, faith and clarity in defining rules, hilarious and outrageous examples of rules violated, and its firm lessons in what to do right. It had a fluent bounce, never dawdled. I looked forward to the same treatment on the subject of manners. That's not exactly what you get.
Manners are subject to relativity; grammar is less so. One can be appalled at rudeness, but you can't come snapping back with the precise correction and fix the problem then and there as you can with a grammar lesson. Truss spends most of her time ranting on six different classes of rudeness and the problems inherent in each, but her chief solution is all there in the subtitle: bolt the door.

    Publisher's Summary:
Thailand - Man Heaven? Or Man Hell? It's really as the Thai say "Up To You". You'll see plenty of books on kindle talking about the visible sex trade in Thailand. When you mention Thailand to many people that's the first thing that springs to mind.
I'm not a genius but I can guess if you are looking at this book the chances are you are interested in seeing for yourself. The book is not the assassination job that the headline may suggest - it was based upon interviews with people that work in the trade.
It was interesting to hear their point of view and the practical issues that they face every day. Yes, they have problems with clients - but just as often they have problems with other people in the background of the trade, and other bar workers.
There's times when things can get wild and out of control - times when people in the trade pay a high price for being involved - and times when people wonder how they can go on.
There's a long list of chapters in the book and while I don't pretend that every word in the book will be relevant to you, there's no doubt that you will gain a ton of knowledge by listening to it. I suppose if you only learn one new thing that prevents you from making a costly mistake the book will be worth it.
There's a very straightforward line in the book that is the gold standard as to how to conduct yourself if you travel to Thailand to take up with ladies of the night. That line is also the last line in the book. Learn it, recite it, and never forget it and you will find Thailand to be Man Heaven. Ignore it and welcome to hell.
Once again that's up to you. I know what I would prefer.

    Do not buy, garbage
What disappointed you about Thailand: The Vicious Truth About Thai Hookers?
This is a very poorly written, badly assembled, repetitive load of garbage. The author purports to expose the truth about the subject but what we get is a disjointed list of generalisations, half truths, misinformation, straight out lies interpersed with a few truisms. The problem is if you hve no personal knowlrdge of the subjrect you do not know which is which. The author presents as a bombastic, know all, self important, smart arse, ignorant idiotic. You will find several of this type in any bar in Thailand. They make you make you cringe with embarrassment and give tourists a bad name in Thailand.Similar girls in their the men's own country would not give them the time of day. The only redeeming fact is that the girls recignise this and play them off a break. No wonder he writes under a pseudonym. He is a uneducated half witted moron.
Would you ever listen to anything by The Blether again?
    Never
Would you be willing to try another one of Ron Herczigs performances?
He is very average but had little to work with. As the text is written in the first person one cannot help but identify him with the author.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Thailand: The Vicious Truth About Thai Hookers?
    All of it.
    Any additional comments?
You should remove this and any other books, an I use that word loosely, written by the author from you catalogue.

Length: 7 hrs and 43 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-23-17
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
A short, sharp intervention in the crucial debate about the future of democracy, which has been brought to a head by events from Brexit to the Trump phenomenon.
In response to the emerging 'I'm a democrat, but...' consensus, this audiobook will argue for a forthright defence of democracy against its enemies and critics, old and new. As part of that argument, it will aim to show that the problem has not been too much democracy, but too little - the absence of real political choices about the future that has stoked the popular mood of antipolitics.
    Critic Reviews:
Praise for Mick Hume: "Superb.... This is a first-rate polemic and the most important political book of the year so far." (Rod Liddle)
"This is an important book, and couldn't be more timely. It's strong-minded, unafraid, determined to knock down all the various specious arguments against free speech, unapologetic about insisting on the value of free expression, and terrifically well argued. In these weak-minded times it's good to have so uncompromising a defence." (Salman Rushdie)
"What this book does tremendously is pull off the neat trick of summing up just what the hell is going on out there on the great frontiers of speech, offence, liberty and people shouting at each other." (The Times)

More and more people of all political persuasions are recognising how the elite with the help of controlled media and useful idiots on the left are chipping away at democracy. the election of the establishment puppet Macron in France. portrayed by the media as a rebel outsider, is the latest example of the elite controlling democracy. wake up!
    Must read for freedom lovers.
Excellent review of democracy and how we are losing it. Time for action to take it back.

  • In Praise of Slow Audiobook by Carl Honoré

    Title: In Praise of Slow
Subtitle: How a Worldwide Movement Is Challenging the Cult of Speed
    Author: Carl Honoré
    Narrator: Carl Honoré
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 38 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-13-17
    Publisher: Penguin Random House Canada
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
In the tradition of such trailblazing books as No Logo and The Tipping Point, In Praise of Slow heralds a growing international movement of people dedicated to slowing down the pace of our contemporary times and enjoying a richer, fuller life as a result.
These days, almost everyone complains about the hectic pace of their lives. We live in a world where speed rules and everyone is under pressure to go faster. But when speed is king, anyone or anything that gets in our way, that slows us down, becomes an enemy. Thanks to speed, we are living in the age of rage.
Carl Honoré has discovered a movement that is quickly working its way into the mainstream. Groups of people are developing a recipe for living better in a fast-paced, modern environment by striving for a new balance between fast and slow. In an entertaining and hands-on investigation of this new movement, Honoré takes us from a Tantric sex workshop in a trendy neighborhood in London, England, to Bra, Italy, the home of the Slow Food, Slow Cities and Slow Sex movements. He examines how we can continue to live productive lives by embracing the tenets of the slow movement.
A challenging take on the cult of speed as well as a corrective look at how we can approach our lives with new understanding, In Praise of Slow uncovers a movement whose time has come.
    Critic Reviews:
"Life is getting faster, no doubt about it. We rush everything: we eat fast food, have quickie sex, drive like maniacs, and compete hard for fast-paced jobs. We wish to slow down and slack off, but we're afraid we'll fail. The big secret is that slower people succeed, and slow often works better than fast. A London-based journalist, Honoré shows us the benefits of slowness, with chapters on food, transportation, meditation and exercise, medicine, sex, work, and parenting. In all these areas, people are making organized efforts toward slower, stress-free methods, and he provides some concrete examples (Italy's Slow Food and Slow City movements, a Tantric sex workshop in London, Japan's new approach to schooling).... This book presents ideas and resources that will be new to most readers and is recommended for both public and academic libraries." (Library Journal Review)
"A former 'speedaholic,' an award-winning Canadian journalist advocates living a slower, more measured existence, in virtually every area, a philosophy he defines as 'balance'. The author explores, in convincing and skillful prose, a quiet revolution known as 'the slow movement', which is attempting to integrate the advances of the information age into a lifestyle that is marked by an 'inner slowness' that gives more depth to relationships with others and with oneself. For the overprogrammed and stressed, slow and steady may win the race." (Publisher's Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
Slow down. It's healthy for you.
The title of this book is somewhat misleading because the author is not in favor of being slow, but of slowing down, which is not necessarily the same thing. The premise of the book is that our society is obsessed with speed. As a result our lives have become insufferably hectic and busy. We are under overt and subtle pressure to do as many things as possible. The only way to do them all is to rush through them, thus the obsession with speed.

    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
In his 1997 work Guns, Germs, and Steel, American geography professor and environmental historian Jared Diamond looks to answer the question of why human history unfolded differently on different continents, and why power and wealth became distributed as they are.
Drawing on evidence from a diverse range of disciplines, Diamond argues that the varying rates of human development over the past 13,000 years have had very little to do with genetic superiority. They are down to differences in environments. Differences across continents in wild plants and in animal species that could be domesticated played a part. Differences in the sizes of areas and populations did too. The advent of agricultural production in well-situated countries freed more people up to become warriors, leaders, and tool-makers, leading to a virtuous circle of technological advances.
This groundbreaking work has won many awards, including the highly regarded Pulitzer Prize in 1998. The National Geographic Society produced a documentary based on the book that was first broadcast in 2005.

Is it safer to fly or take the train? How dangerous is skydiving? And is eating that extra sausage going to kill you? We've all heard the statistics for risky activities, but what do they mean in the real world? In The Norm Chronicles, journalist Michael Blastland and risk expert David Spiegelhalter explore these questions through the stories of average Norm and an ingenious measurement called the MicroMorta - a one-in-a-million chance of dying. They reveal why general anesthesia is as dangerous as a parachute jump, giving birth in the US is nearly twice as risky as in the UK, and that the radiation from eating a banana shaves three seconds off your life. An entertaining guide to the statistics of personal risk, The Norm Chronicles will enlighten anyone who has ever worried about the dangers we encounter in our daily lives.

Who KNEW death and statistics could be such FUN?
This is a clever piece of work. Many acquaintances, and I, have been wrangling about one risk of everyday life versus another, forever, i.e., the stuff of our daily choices, our claims of wisdom or folly. There is a neat little tutorial in simple statistics imbedded in this too, and ways of debunking splashy news stories, but as you follow the quirky little stories here, you might not have noticed it. I have read other books about debunking claims, but this one went down like fizzy candy. In a good way. And, don't get me wrong, there is plenty of adult info, on which many an adult is snared in miscalculation. And I vastly appreciate the way the mundane non-emergencies of life are noticed and modeled here, and not merely the garish, slapstick side so (misleadingly) splashed around the news.
    The Companion PDF???
Great book, if a recording ever mentions a companion chart, figure out image then Audible should get it and post it next to the recording... it is not that difficult.
