    Publisher's Summary:
Rosalba is a nine-year-old Mayan girl living in rural Mexico. Like her mother and grandmother, she weaves stories of her people onto blouses, ensuring that the age-old traditions continue. But new influences are entering her life. A ladina girl from the city, visiting with her scientist father, passes on the astonishing news that the Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world in 2012. Rosalba knows nothing about that, but her village is faced with a bulldozer tearing through the forest, dying wildlife, and cornfields in danger.
Rosalbas new friend tells her she must do something to help, but what? As she ponders, she dreams of an ancient Mayan boy, eyes bound in a shamanistic ritual, who hints at a way she can make her voice heard.Interweaving a contemporary story with a mythical dream narrative, Carolyn Marsden spins a gripping tale of friendship, cultural identity, and urgent environmental themes.
    Members Reviews:
    Quite timely for 2012!
The title and jacket design don't give an indication what this fine story is about; once you finish reading the book you'll recognize the face of the main character, Rosalba, wearing her huipil, with a stone Mayan calendar in the background. This highly imaginative story combines mythical elements, modernity and the presage of the Mesoamerican edict of the end of the world. This is a story of Rosalba, a village girl of rural Mexico who meets Alicia, a ladina girl from the city. Their immediate friendship adorns the story, which is laden with issues of cultural and familial differences, the destruction of the environment, both naturally and man-made, and of course that dire prediction for December 21, 2012. Tightly woven with the contemporary story is that of Xunko, a thirteen-year-old shaman from pre-Columbian history. Ultimately Xunko's sway is felt in Rosalba's phantasmagorical dreams. This lovely and empowering coming-of-age story for girls includes an interesting Author's Note as well as a Glossary of most, but by no means all, odd terms.
Middle-School level Earth Spiritualism set in a contemporary Mayan town
I read this book very quickly, in order to see if I could use it for a class I'm teaching on Mexico/Guatemala. Because of the speed of my reading I don't claim to have caught all the nuances. I think you get a good feeling for what the book is about if you read the book cover. In part, it reads: "Interweaving a contemporary story with a mythical dream narrative, Carolyn Marsden spins a gripping tale of friendship, cultural identity, and urgent environmental themes." I do think it was a relatively compelling read for the target audience, although I agree with another reviewer that younger children (upper elem/middle school) should have an adult discuss elements of the book with them (Ancient Mayan sacrifices are described in poetic language).
Here's my quick summary: The book opens with a traditional Mayan 9yo named Rosalba meeting an 8yo from Mexico City. The 8yo is in the Mayan area as part of her father's scientific expedition to learn about why frogs are dying. Rosalba is very connected to the natural world and therefore shares the girl's concern for the frogs. Protecting the environment immediately becomes a main theme of the story.
    A secondary theme is spiritualism.

Title: The Rites and Wrongs of Janice Wills

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 5 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-12-11
    Publisher: Listening Library

    Genres: Teens, Ages 11-13
    Publisher's Summary:
For anyone who's ever survived a rite of passage or performed a mating dance at Prom.
The Japanese hold a Mogi ceremony for young women coming of age. Latina teenagers get quinceaneras. And Janice Wills of Melva, NC ... has to compete in the Miss Livermush pageant.
Janice loves anthropology--the study of human cultures--and her observations help her identify useful rules in the chaotic world of high school. For instance: Dancing is an effective mating ritual--but only if you're good at it; Hot Theatre Guys will never speak to Unremarkable Smart Girls like Janice and her best friend, Margo; and a Beautiful Rich Girl will always win Melva's annual Miss Livermush pageant.
But when a Hot Theatre Guy named Jimmy Denton takes an interest in Janice, all her scientific certainties explode. For the first time, she has to be part of the culture that she's always observed; and all the charts in the world can't prove how tough--and how sweet--real participation and a real romance can be.
Funny, biting, and full of wisdom, this marks the debut of a writer to watch.

    I couldn't relate, NOT the author's fault
Hurray! I won this one on GoodReads, First-Reads. Looking forward to this new adventure!

The print in this book is so light that I have had a hard time reading this. Therefore, I downloaded the Audible version to help me along.
    * * *
This book has taken me months to read. My biggest problem with it was the print. These old eyes just can't read well on white, white paper and it seemed the ink was also light in color. Once I got the Audible version to help me I found a nice book. The writing was fun and presented in a cool vehicle of anthropological notes.
I feel badly in that I feel I am NOT the audience for this book. If I weren't old I still wouldn't be. I wasn't a girlie girl. I would never go to a prom. I thought they were silly. So at first I felt a link with Janice. But as the story continued I knew I couldn't relate anymore. I couldn't even relate to her mother. I don't remember the Pony. So out of it all my life!
But then the last straw of related-ism: I am from Southern California. The only thing I had in common was Southern but not related in this universe.
That being said, I liked the presentation and the lessons learned as Janice matures.

For anyone who wonders where God is in times of trouble
This book is intended for young adults, but really it is for anyone who has wondered where God is in their times of trouble or why He allows bad things to happen. The story brought me back to those awkward early teen years when I had that one adult I wished I could grow up to be (mine was Pam Price) and I worried no boy would ever be interested in me.
One of my favorite lines from the book relate to Elvira's learning about a God she'd never really known or understood before.
But then it occurred to me he meant you could believe in God anywhere, not just in some stuffy old church. You could pray and read the Bible in the middle of a campground and it was all a fine thing to do. God apparently didn't mind where you were as long as you believed.
    And another very wise Elvirism:
There's only one God. But people see God the way they want to.
No wonder it was so easy to read
Reminded me of my earlier days of being a teen! Then I realized it was a teen book! No wonder it was so easy to read.
The greatest of these is love.
Flawed people leading hardscrabble lives. Yet each has something inside that we want to embrace. Love. Torture it with guilt, deny it, hate it. In the end, cling to it and let it free you to be at peace. I was charmed. I would recommend this book to all ages, anyone who loves a happy ending.
    Breath Of Fresh Air
Imagine living in the 1940's, dirt poor in the middle of nowhere. With a mother who only notices you when you do something wrong, a grandmother who has nothing better than to constantly insult your mother for marrying your now dead father and a little sister who can see into the future. That is exactly the type of home in which Elvira Witsil grew up in.
Family secrets, loss, strained relationships all wrapped up with a small glimmer of hope.
Insight was a breath of fresh air. I was sucked into this novel within the first few pages. Diana Greenwood did an excellent job with the character development. I especially loved being inside the head of Elvira. She was such an interesting character, there were moments where I couldn't help but laugh at some of the thoughts that ran through her mind while other times my heart just ached for her.
Jessie was another favorite of mine. For such a small child she showed more thoughtfulness and wisdom than anyone else in her family.
Insight was an all around well written novel. Full of tense drama, emotional struggles and a family's journey to grow, heal and love.
    Insight by Diana Greenwood
I enjoyed this book a lot.

Through their friendship, Dewey comes to learn a whole lot about his small town, and about the world outside it, too: things about racism and segregation, secrets, and standing up for whats right.
    Critic Reviews:
There is neither too much nostalgia nor message, and readers will be haunted by the drama of harsh secrets close to home. (Booklist)
Watkins pulls off an incredible feat in this novel, capturing the racial prejudices and Vietnam War tensions of the era. (Voice of Youth Advocates)
    Members Reviews:
Beautifully written - not just for teens
I am an adult over 40 and I absolutely LOVED this book. I read nearly all genres but I usually forget about young adult novels, I'm thrilled that I came across this one.
The story told from the point of view of 12 year old Dewey about all aspects of growing up, negative and positive, was very well done. I have teen sons and I know that a lot of the feelings Dewey had are feelings many teen boys have, especially those who are sensitive and thoughtful. I know another reviewer was concerned about the sexual content in this book and so I knew that going in, but honestly, I kept waiting for "The Big Sex Scene" and never found one. Maybe my mind is just more open than others and I see the world as it really is instead of reading bad things into what is a very natural part of life. I think it is appropriate for teens as they are having these feelings too and there was nothing at all explicit, it was told from the point of view of a 12 year old who had no clue about what was going on and that was it - a few paragraphs.
Anyway, I truly enjoyed every second of this book, I loved the characters, the topics covered (bullying, racial tensions, death, friendship, family, religion and yes, there was even a hint that one of the young characters may be gay. Many adults forget what it's like to be a teen and to deal with the pressures, confusion, trying to fit in, trying to grow-up and still wanting to be taken care of - but the author obviously has not forgotten this as he was able to weave these feelings into a heart warming, sweet, coming of age story. I highly recommend this book to ages 12 and up, including adults.
    Awestruck
Steve Watkins sensitively re-creates the claustrophobia and emotional complexity of being 12. You begin to notice your parents' flaws. You come to share (without much real understanding) the anxiety of global events, see how pain and dysfunction thread through your family and your friends', judge societal injustices such as racism, wade through the bafflement of sexuality, parse grownup situations with a limited vocabulary. You have eaten of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, but as will be your fate, can't always judge which is which, because sometimes lying is right and usually it's some of both.
Because this book is set in the 1960s, it is like a reassuring letter from parent to child. The particular issues and struggles have evolved, but the central feelings of the age are eternal.

This book is a astonishing book about growing up. You learn about boys, Ireland and movie stars. If you want to know something about growing up read this book. If you want to know something about boys read this book. If your want to read something AMAZING read this book.
    Amazing
This book is amazing i cant wait to read the next one!!! I want to read the whole series! Sarah Webb is a really good writer for tween/teens.
    So - so
This is the second book in the series and as I had read the first one, I was curious to read this second installment.
The premise of the books are cute and fun. Amy - a very typical teen, finds herself in a blended family with lots of people surrounding her. She has found "her true love???" and has somehow become a lifeline of advice to others.
As I am typing this, I realize that the main problem I had with this book is that there is, indeed, too much going on at the same time. It feels as though the author is trying to make her storyline (and her main character) too ecclectic - especially when she literally surrounds her with so many people who basically have their own (weird and at times funny) storylines of their own.
I kept trying to keep the main thread going - that of Amy and Seth trying to be together, but everything else in the storyline just kept getting in the way.
This was not a horrible read, just not as much fun as I would have hoped - although I still do enjoy Amy and her very particular way of thinking and dealing with situations.
    Wonderfull
I sat on my bed for longer than an hour so I could see what's next in this amazing series KEEP ON WRITING SARAH WEBB!!!<3
