Laugh Out Loud

I just loved this book. As always, Hiaasen is such a fun listen/read. This story is a terrific satire on our obsession with fame and the famous. The main character and her entourage are appropriately obnoxious and annoying, so much so that I found myself laughing out loud ...more than once embarrassing myself in public.

The story has elements of mystery, romance (sorta), sex, drugs, and lots of bad music.

Chemo and Skink, my favorites, are major characters in this book.

I thought that the narrator was fine, although I have listened to many of Hiaasen's books, I am not so attached to the other narrators as some reviewers seem to be.

Have fun listening.

Very enjoyable

I listened to this straight through and enjoyed it immensely. Generally, his books have more of an ecological theme and a discussion of the hazards of overbuilding the Florida coast but this book is just a fun discussion of the gossip rage that surrounds us now.

Thoroughly enjoyable!

This book had me laughing practically every minute of listening. Hiassen's characters, as usual, are over the top. A roadkill-eating ex-governor, a hitman/mortgage broker with a weed whacker for a prothesis, and a Lindsay Lohan style airhead who lip syncs her hit records, just to name a few. I found the interaction between Chemo and Cherry Pye to be especially funny: he jolts her with a cattle prod whenever she uses any words he finds annoying, such as "totally" and "awesome." Stephen Hoye, the reader, does an excellent job with the various voices, especially Janet Bunterman, the airhead's enabling mother. Yes, he does mispronounce some of the place names (Mo-have rather than Mo-havee), but I completely disagree with those critics who complain about Hoye's narration.

What Happened To George Wilson???

Although the book itself is classic Hiaasen, I was disappointed by the narrator. Stephen Hoye did Skinny Dip as well.

Her character voices from the young Charlie to the sexy and strong Nick to the snooty country club friend Romy are all realistic and believable. And Nixons pacing and timing, especially during the dialogue scenes, make the story come alive every scene, feeling, and spoken word are familiar, recognizable, and relatable.

Between Giffins talent for describing emotions purely and vividly and Nixons undeniable talent for delivering them, its hard to believe this is a work of fiction. Colleen Oakley

Nice history of Hawaiin quilts too

I'll keep saying it. I love these stories. They are not heavy reading (listening?) by any means and that's why I love them. This one made me want to make a quilt in the Hawaiin way. Will I? Doesn't matter. Nice listen.

Kudos to the reader too. I know which character she is now from book to book. Very cool.

Hawai'i

I loved the story itself. The Hawaiian history and culture was represented thoughtfully and it wasn't the maitai-coconut bikini novel you usually run across in fiction set in Hawai'i. sooo refreshing. Some reviews complain about the 'olelo in there but the narrator did a... decent-ish job. Small stuff like Kalakaua sounding like Kalakawa. Cadence was off. Hawaiian has a flow to it and her flow was... awkward.

My biggest issue was how she pronounce Midori. Japanese is my second language, Hawaiian another... She say it like "Muhdory" it is "Me-dory" but not that hard r... Totally grated on my nerves. *shudder*.

But the pronounciation makes sense when she does Bonnie as she is a guest to the islands. But in voicing Hinano who is kama'ina or Midori who is also local... no excuse.

Story makes it worth it though so don't let it stop you from buying it. It's very well done otherwise story and performance. Glad to own it.

Aloha Quilt took me on a mental vacation

This might be one of my favorite books in the Elm Creek series. I listen while I drive. It relaxes me and prevents road rage. LOL

When she was describing Zip Lining over the Hawaiian landscape I found myself on a tall bridge and getting nervous. My mind was in the story. And now I have a desire to make a Hawaiian style quilt. And I hope to visit one day. I really enjoyed this book.

I love this book!

The narrator was perfect in that she said the main character. It was about the spirit of love and friendship even when things go wrong and even through a very terrible divorce. It speaks of every Kindle in spirit to go on with life and do good when you thought you had lost it all.

Cape Refuge Series

Every one of the books in this series is great! Great suspense!!! Great inspirational series!!!

Trigger: miscarriage, infertility

This book is part of a series, however I was unaware it would be largely focused around miscarriage, infertility, IVF, foster parenting and children reuniting with drug addicted parents, etc. For most readers, this is likely no big deal, but if you've dealt with loss and been through IVF, parts can be hard to listen to. Especially if you're still in the midst of the infertility journey. The author once said that the fertility doctor was "playing God". I took offense to that, because if God doesn't have it in His plan for IVF to work, it won't, regardless of the doctor's ability and the science and technology available to us. The story was suspenseful and the book is a clean read, but if you're in this season of life, just be aware that it's a large part of the storyline.

Doctor, Policeman, Politician or Reporter?

A fantastic story to listen to on our trip across the country. It helped to keep us awake as we listened to the unraveling of a mystery of "Who Was The Guilty Party?"

Truly Amazing Christian Fiction

Wonderful Book!

This is really an enjoyable book! The narration is excellent. If you have an Itouch, you have to get the App, Jurrasic, from Itunes. It is a virtual tour of the exact location the book takes place in! You can actually view the cliffs and shoreline of Lyme Regis.

Immerse yourself in Mary Anning's world

Very well-drawn characters based on historical figures that really takes the reader to the times and places of Victorian-era England. It's a lot of fun to "meet" Charles Lyell and William Buckland as well as, of course, Mary Anning. I'm going to insist that my daughter read/listen to this and, if you have a daughter at all interested in the natural sciences, this is a must-read.

The narrators were superb. One reads the chapters from Mary Anning's point of view with a Cockney accent and the other reads the parts of Elizabeth Philpot with an aristocratic tone befitting the character's high-class background.

I could have used more of the science and a little less of the drama but I recognize I'm a little more science-hungry than your average reader. It's probably about right for most folks? Definitely will get you Googling various fossils and the Lyme Regis.

Unforgettable Women

This is the remarkable story of Mary Anning and Elizabeth Philpot based on their TRUE lives. They are two strong women who form an unlikely friendship, based on a shared interest in fossil collecting. I felt as if transported in time to join these two unforgettable characters on their quest. Tracy Chevalier should be commended for giving these two historical figures their due. Thank you ladies.

another good one

I enjoy every thing this author writes. I especially like that she examines little parts of history that truly have a fascinating tale to tell. Her characters are appropriate to the time of the story and always interesting to follow as they proceeed along the story line. I hope she writes another one soon

Just okay...

Honestly, I was bored with this book. I was excited to find a new series with some sassy old ladies, and there was potential, but to me, this fell short. Nothing exciting happened. I went into this book expecting to laugh at some of the antics of the godmothers, but that never happened. I thought possibly Abby would get kidnapped by Micky who was trying to find Rag and then the godmothers with have to come up with some crazy plan to rescue her, but then all of a sudden, the arson investigators figured him out and arrested him and that was the end of that. He was never even mentioned again. The narrator was okay, but could have given a little more life to this story. I won't be reading the rest of the series.

A must read

Enjoyed it. Will be looking forward to the next book. Hope Abby and Chris get together.

Great performance of a wonderful book, but I was snapped out of its trance when the narrator mispronounced Paulina. Minor quibble, you should check it out!

Amazingly descriptive

The most vivid book I have ever listen to on audible. I could see every backroom dark corner this novel took place in. Every character had a face and voice that I could recognize. This is a must listen.

Great Book, good performance

Excellent, bleak tale of a West Sider after the war. Truly the Native Son or Lonigan of the Polish community. My only complaint was the way the reader pronounced Paulina, which I understand non-Chicagoans not knowing. But it's strange to hear.

Gloomy, unengaging

The dialogue/prose is terribly dated and distracting. To redeem such a bleak story, there needed to be at least one genuinely likable character. It doesn't seem to know what it's about; I didn't get it.

Disappointing Listen

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Nothing. The stories never occurred as connected or coherent and was not interesting, though occasionally hilarious. Admittedly, I stopped listening half way through, though I do not think Roddy Doyle gave me no reason to finish.

This isn't read in the correct order. What edition could he possibly be reading? I checked three copies and couldn't figure it found. It also skips some lines and parts. OK listen overall if you're not trying to read with the book.

Powerful

This audiobook is masterfully read by Christopher Simpson, who is absolutely outstanding given his vast array of accents and vocal gymnastics. His reading adds an ingredient that would have been sorely missed without him. Having just visited India, I found I was pulled right into the vivid storyline.

I loved the movie but I found the stories in the book far more moving. It's originally entitled Q&A which is actually the story's format. I haven't been teary-eyed over many stories, but this one really touched my heart. The narrative jumps around a bit, but it all still plays out quite powerfully. The movie is based on the dynamics from this book, but I wish it used a few more of these stories (while politically, I can understand why they didn't). Ram Mohammad Thomas (Jamal in the movie), is still quite unforgettable. Salim and the host of other good and bad guys and all of their stories will stay with me for a long time. Even the charismatic TV show emcee has important history; I loved it. It's heavy at times, but a powerful read.

Highly recommended.

Interesting presentation. Engaging mystery.

I like this kind of book. There's a huge mystery to be solved. Hints and details are given in *unchronological order* (If you like that style of presentation, Google search: "Haruhi novels"). Those hints/details are told with believable amounts of embellishments by the unreliable narrator who is at the center of this huge mystery. (Since I can only listen to audiobooks a chapter at a time, I found myself mulling over possible clues scattered throughout the novel and was rewarded for my analysis efforts in the end). Decent and lovable characters die horrible deaths just as easily as random NPCs from the street. Oh, and the story takes place in India. India! How many books on Audible take place in India? From someone who really knows India? Sure, Vikas Swarup may be yet another US-born Indian, but the details he writes in sounds credible enough.

"Absolutely, 100 Per cent, Correct!"

Q and A (the book's original title) is a novel of vast scope and tremendous depth, full of irony amid tragedy, and hope surrounded by despair. The "story" of its main character, "Ram Mohammed Thomas," is the equivalent of at least a dozen stories, and gives the reader/listener SO much more than the movie, Slumdog Millionaire, could ever hope to do. For those who saw the movie, listening to the novel will be an entirely different experience.

There is something in this novel for everyone to relate to, I believe, and what makes it all so marvelous is the writing talent of its first-time novelist, Vikas Swarup. Mr. Swarup has given us all a look into contemporary life in the big cities of India, through the eyes of a boy badly used by that life. In doing so, he educates while entertaining us with a plot filled with incredible coincidences, and surprise conclusions that keep us on edge, and eager for more.

Not What I Expected, Much Better

I was expecting a little light reading with this one but what I got was a book that challenged my notions of what slavery actually was. I didn't want to like this book, I wasn't sure how I felt about the story of an African American slave being told by a white woman. Kudos to Jennifer Chiaverini on this accomplishment. I think this book changes her status from genre fiction to literature. Of course, it isn't perfect, it can be a little flat in the modern sections but the story of Joanna is entralling and emotional and gritty. This book actually changed how I felt about my own slave ancestors. I went from a place of shame to a place of extreme pride and love for a people who were tortured and suffered and yet still managed to survive and maintain their humanity. If you think "The Help" is good, you might want to give this book a try as well.

Love the historical Chiaverini stories too!

I live to sew and sew to live. I love being able to listen to these wonderful stories of women lives, friendships and challenges while I'm sewing. You really don't need to know how to sew or quilt to appreciate thesae stories. I have also listened while driving and not wanted to get out of the car after an entire day of driving.

What a Wonderful Storyteller is Chiaverini!

This is my second Elm Creek Quilters novel and I am delighted to have found this wonderful storyteller. The Lost Quilter is a story from era of slavery in America that is interesting, entertaining, enlightening, educational and - most of all - absolutely riveting.

I found myself driving to and from work and doing other mundane tasks and then stopping...holding my breath! What will happen next?!?

I cared about the characters.... heck, I even cared about the characters who were horrible! I wanted to know what happened to them. I wanted to hope that Joanna and Titus would succeed in their quest to be free.

The art of quilting is a unifying theme in these books. But the characters and the author's ability to make them come to life is what will bring you back to Elm Creek and the quilters there. (And I don't even quilt!)

I am going to find more of Chiaverini's books to either read or listen to. The narrator did a truly excellent job. I recommend this book most highly.
