    Publisher's Summary:
Marie-Ange Hawkins has the kind of childhood that most people dream of. Freedom, love, security in a beautiful old French château. But when Marie-Ange is just eleven, a tragic accident marks the end of her idyllic life. Orphaned and alone, she is sent to America, to live with her great-aunt on a farm in Iowa. Bitterly resented by the old woman, cut off from everything she has known and loved, Marie-Ange is forced to work tirelessly on the farm, dreaming only of the day she can return to her beloved Château de Marmouton.
In Marie-Ange's isolated existence, only the friendship of a local boy, Billy Parker, offers comfort and hope. But her only wish is to gain an education- and escape. Then, just after her twenty-first birthday, an unexpected visitor brings startling news and an extraordinary gift: the freedom to return to France, to Château de Marmouton.
When she arrives in France, Marie-Ange learns that the château's new owner is Comte Bernard de Beauchamp, a dashing young widower who invites into his home, then into his heart. But their magical life together, which soon includes marriage, children, and lavish homes, slowly takes an ominous turn. A mysterious woman tells Marie-Ange a shocking story, a story so shilling she doesn't want to believe it. Not even her dear friend Billy can help her now. He is thousands of miles away. And as the darkness gathers around her, Marie-Ange must find the faith and courage to take one, last desperate step to save her loved ones...and herself.

    Leap of faith.
Loved the story. Just wished the ending was more finished. I was wishing it to complete and the two get together and hear the house was rebuilt and a happy ever after with everyone in the orchard playing. Shorter than most of her books.
    Leap of Faith
A story of a man who love only for his own gain and almost succeeds in getting all he wants from two women.
    Too predictable
Worst DS book I've ever read. Too bad I paid good money to download it on Audible
    To much unfinished, abrupt ending.
Where is the real Danielle Steele, the one who wrote great books like the early days??? I'm very disappointed in the books of late. They are either short with rushed unfinished endings or she repeats over and over many parts of the stories to help fill the books. If she has ran out of ideas for GOOD stories than she should end her writing career on a good note or at least take a long break and regroup. Sorry Danielle, but this is how many of us feel.

Abridged should not mean the ending is removed
I should have noticed that this was an abridged version of the book. I would not expect that the ending would be part of what was removed. There are five chapters and one download. I bought the kindle version just to see how the book ended. I would give that a zero star if possible.
    Seriously? Audible should be ashamed
What would have made The Search better?
An ending! Seriously, I read another review which said Audible was aware the ending was cut off. Most disturbing is they know that and they sell it anyway! Audible disgusts me for this kind of behavior. Money hungry pigs.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
    What ending?
What aspect of Cynthia Nixons performance would you have changed?
Nothing, Cynthia did great, it's just too bad they short-changed her by cutting off the ending of the book.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
The book not having an ending and reading the other reviews about it sparked anger at Audible.
    Any additional comments?
Audible, you are the broker of this book and should be contacting the publisher yourselves to have it fixed. Your customers are purchasing the book which means beginning to end. What you are doing is false advertising and you are taking money for it. Go back to common decency and customer service school as you obviously need it.
    Where is the rest?
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Just as I was getting into the book, it ended - at a very suspenseful and climactic part. There is either a big mistake in editing, or I was sold half a book in the disguise of a complete novel. I don't even know about the next book. Bummer, because it was getting pretty good.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Monty the dog.
Have you listened to any of Cynthia Nixons other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No
Did The Search inspire you to do anything?
Find the rest of this story
    Any additional comments?
    People should be warned
    Exciting and Fascinating Story
This books is one of the most interesting books I have read. It was Wonderful to learn about the rescue dogs.
Does anyone know of any other books about Rescue Dogs?? I have searched but can find Nothing. I would love some input.
Not my favorite Eve Duncan novel...
The story was ok but it wasn't about Eve and Joe and Jane. I had a hard time hearing the reader even with my volume at the max.

    Title: The Banyan Tree
    Author: Christopher Nolan
    Narrator: Fiona Shaw
    Format: Abridged
    Length: 6 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-30-00
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 10 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Covering the 80-plus years of the life of Minnie O'Brien, who is bound to take her place in literature alongside James Joyce's Molly Bloom, The Banyan Tree is a rich saga of rural Ireland in the 20th century. In distinctly layered prose that has been compared to that of Joyce, Yeats, and Dylan Thomas, Nolan lovingly details the life and times, the triumphs and tragedies, of this spirited woman. Married in 1922 to Peter O'Brien, a good and decent man who nonetheless harbors a terrible secret, Minnie bears him 3 children. Francis, the youngest, leaves home at age 17 to wander the world in search of fame or fortune. It is for him - Minnie's favorite, the prodigal son - that she jealously struggles to keep the five fields willed her by her husband from the clutches of her ambitious and unscrupulous neighbor Jude Fortune. The Banyan Tree is feisty and colorful, filled with humor and love - and demonstrates forcefully that the gentle world of Minnie's youth is gone forever.

item received in excellent condition. This author is a bit difficult to understand (for me) or maybe I wasn't ready to read this book. I am happy with purchase and delivery of item. Thank you.
    Words, words, and more words
Not to sound hard, but a novel should stand on its own merits despite the afflictions ot the author. There is a wonderful story hidden in the purple prose. These characters could have been so incredibly moving if only Christopher Nolan had not been in love with words--and often the wrong ones. When he gets more deeply into the story, his style becomes more lilting and descriptive--the rest of the time, the language gets in the way of the story and real communication. At times, I moaned aloud at the ridiculous overuse of words just to use words, and yet, I did love Minnie and her love for her land. I would have liked to have heard more from her--the earthy, honest woman--and less from the author.
    Good read
Love Mr. Nolan's unique writing and the setting in Ireland. I wish he had lived longer and written more.
    What an Stunning Novel
I stumbled onto this novel by accident one day surfing around the Amazon site and I am so happy I picked this book up. It's an amazing story told by a man with an equally amazing story. I only hope we don't have to wait another 12 years for Nolan's next novel. The Banyon Tree pulls you in immediately and keeps you reading until the last page with prose that will take your breath away. Nolan's characters, especially Minnie, the 80-something protagonist are so real. They are normal people but Nolan tells his tale in such a way that they become extraordinary. Minnie has three children, and waits patiently for 40 years for the youngest, the one who left one day at age 18 to return to the family's Irish farm. She keeps the farm for him, living simply, thinking every day he will come back. She, and we, don't know his fate until almost the end of the book. This is a story of family, of love, of truth, of denial.

    Sublime
An eloquent reader matched by the superb writing skills of Laura..... You have the best imagination...... Characters are surprising, memorable.
Great story, sound quality not so much.
I loved the story; magical without being too out there. I also really liked Yareli Arizmendi's voice - she gave the characters real lives and feelings. The problem with the book is that the sound quality is poor. It's distorted and the background music and sound effects sometimes makes the narrator hard to hear.
I'd recommend this book, but only if it's on sale. The quality just isn't quite there.
Scrumptious Mexican Folk Tale for Adults
My sweetheart and I listened to this audiobook on cassette tapes borrowed from the library almost 20 years ago just after it was released, and savored every moment. (This time through I liked it only slightly less well, mainly because the ending felt rushed and didn't match up with my 20-year-old memory of how the story ended.) It definitely held up overall for a second listen, and someday I'll probably give it a third listen. This story is part adult fairy tale/folk tale, part cookbook, part steamy love story, part home remedy recipe book...it's delicious and nutritious and yes, the ending is weird, but that's okay. You're gonna love it anyway.
Special note for those trying to figure out which version to buy: YOU DEFINITELY WANT THIS ONE. Yes, this version is abridged, but in this case the abridged version is more authentic and satisfying because the narrator is Latina and perfect for the material. This definitely needs to be read by a native Spanish speaker; DO NOT waste your money or a credit on the unabridged version read by an Anglo. Besides, this time through I liked the story enough to buy the Kindle book so I could see what-all was cut out for the abridged audiobook, and it felt like hardly anything was.

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Guaranteed to capture the hearts of everyone who truly loves books, The Bookman's Tale is a former bookseller's sparkling novel and a delightful exploration of one of literature's most tantalizing mysteries with echoes of Shadow of the Wind and A.S. Byatt's Possession.
Hay-on-Wye, 1995. Peter Byerly isn't sure what drew him into this particular bookshop. Nine months earlier, the death of his beloved wife, Amanda, had left him shattered. The young antiquarian bookseller relocated from North Carolina to the English countryside, hoping to rediscover the joy he once took in collecting and restoring rare books. But upon opening an 18th-century study of Shakespeare forgeries, Peter is shocked when a portrait of Amanda tumbles out of its pages. Of course, it isn't really her. The watercolor is clearly Victorian. Yet the resemblance is uncanny, and Peter becomes obsessed with learning the picture's origins.
As he follows the trail back first to the Victorian era and then to Shakespeare's time, Peter communes with Amanda's spirit, learns the truth about his own past, and discovers a book that might definitively prove Shakespeare was, indeed, the author of all his plays.

    Mixed bag.
As other reviewers have written, Lovett's book is a mixture of love story, literary mystery, and whodunnit. For my taste, the literary mystery is quite interesting while the other plots are so-so, depending too much on unconvincing coincidence.
    Wonderful listen
Some scholarly stories can be tedious, especially when Shakespeare is involved. Everyone has their own pet theory, but this story is about the characters not the bard. Best book finding mystery I have listened to or read in a while.
One of the best books I have read.
What did you love best about The Bookman's Tale?
Well constructed with interweaving story lines that keep you wanting more. This book deserves more attention than it has received so far.
What other book might you compare The Bookman's Tale to and why?
The originality of the story and the intricate story reminded me of The 13th Tale.
    Any additional comments?
A wonderful combination of mystery, romance and literary history that takes the reader on a wonderful journey. I can not recommend this book strongly enough! A MUST READ!
    Just Ok for me
Having just read The Shadow of the Wind (a novel this book was compared to), I was so excited to read this, but I found it to be just OK. The narration is excellent and the story is fine, just not excellent.
    Pleasant light diversion
I didn't think that this book was terribly well written, but I did enjoy the small glimpse it gave of an antiquarian bookseller's world as well as the author's literary mystery. I listened to the book, and while the narrator's voice was quite beautiful, his pacing was terribly slow. I actually had to speed up the recording to one and a half times its normal speed--something I've rarely had to do.

    Language: English
    Release date: 03-15-10
    Publisher: Tantor Audio

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The Anthologist follows Paul Chowder - a once-in-a-while-published kind of poet who is writing the introduction to a new anthology of poetry. He's having a hard time getting started, because his career is floundering; his girlfriend, Roz, has recently left him; and he is thinking about the great poets throughout history who have suffered far worse and deserve to feel sorry for themselves. He has also promised to reveal many wonderful secrets and tips and tricks about poetry, and it looks like the introduction will be a little longer than he'd thought.
What unfolds is a wholly entertaining and beguiling love story about poetry: from Tennyson, Swinburne, and Yeats to the moderns (Roethke, Bogan, Merwin) to the staff of the New Yorker, what Paul reveals is astonishing and makes one realize how incredible important poetry is to our lives. At the same time, Paul barely manages to realize all of this himself, and the result is a tenderly romantic, hilarious, and inspired novel.

Because I Read Traveling Sprinkler First...
this felt like a prequel, but it is still wonderful stuff. I pity the people who gave this negative reviews: to be so tragically far from the ordinary and everyday and the minuscule that they cannot see the aching beauty in every atom of thought and breath and table cloth.
    Ramblings of a narcissist
Alas, while there are some nuggets of good ideas, they are buried in the omphaloskepsis of a writer who finds every thought that occurs to him equally fascinating, a belief in which he is sadly mistaken. The nuggets are thus rare and, in my view, not worth the effort of waiting for them to roll around. If you ran into this guy at a party, you'd quickly find an excuse to go talk to the cat.
Wonderful Insights into Poetry and Poetic Form
An unemployed poet explains why he can't write the introduction to an anthology of rhyming verse, much to the dismay of his now ex-girlfriend who believes this is a symptom of his much bigger problems with avoidance and denial. Wonderful insights into poetic form and context.
I enjoyed this book and the author's narration
This is quirky book, but it is fresh and engaging. At the end when the Audible host, says, "We hope you enjoyed the program," I said, "I did. I enjoyed this program very much." I won't be for everyone, but if you are looking for something new and different, try this book.
    quirky but wonderful
I can imagine that this wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, but it was mine. Really delightful. Slow pace, but involving and thoughtful.

    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 107 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
These are the endnotes to David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest, a gargantuan, mind-altering comedy about the Pursuit of Happiness in America. Set in an addicts' halfway house and a tennis academy, and featuring the most endearingly screwed-up family to come along in recent fiction, Infinite Jest explores essential questions about what entertainment is and why it has come to so dominate our lives; about how our desire for entertainment affects our need to connect with other people; and about what the pleasures we choose say about who we are. Equal parts philosophical quest and screwball comedy, Infinite Jest bends every rule of fiction without sacrificing for a moment its own entertainment value. It is an exuberant, uniquely American exploration of the passions that make us human - and one of those rare books that renew the idea of what a novel can do.
    Editorial Reviews:
"Pratt is a startlingly good narrator, dry and expressive, with the kind of vocal control that evokes dozens of characters with only slight but very distinctive variations of accent and affect.... Pratt hears the humor in Wallace's work, and lets you in on the joke without resorting to overheated wackiness. His control and stamina are impressive." (John Schwartz,
The New York Times Book Review)

    Approaching the Infinite Life Hack
First, props to Hachette Audio for hearing the cranky, howling DFW Fantoids and releasing the Endnotes. Now to figure out a workable audioHACK to listen to Infinite Jest w/ the separate Endnotes.
    1. Flipping back and forth on my iPhone between Infinite Jest and Endnotes works, but ends up being a tad painful (I started drinking quinine-rich tonic water HEAVILY after the 88th switch to keep my thumb from cramping into some square bend hook).
Like with tennis, I am noticing my muscle memory is starting to take over. I can now jump back and forth between books on Audible without even looking at my phone's screen, which makes driving back and forth between Boston, Canada, and the Great Concavity that much safer.
    2. I've also tried to parallel two different phones, each phone in a separate pocket, an earbud from each in my two ears. That way, I'm just alternating pauses between the narrative (TEXT) and the endnotes (NOTES). I can do this with either by finger pausing on the phones individually, or with the right earphone set, I can just walk around grasping the mic/remotes. While aesthetically, unpleasing, it is dynamically much better. I've also found it helps to set the TEXT in my left ear at 1.5x speed and the NOTES in my right ear at 2x speed. Since Pratt narrates both the NOTES and the TEXT, this is one easy way to distinguish the endnote narrator from my narrative narrator (Pratt is best listened to at 1.5x - 2x speed).
Also, If you have a pony tail, you can also use the two spare earphone cords to tie back your hair. It also helps if your earphone cords are two different colors, since once you become used to having 2x Pratt (NOTES) in your right ear and 1.5x Pratt (TEXT) in your left ear, your brain will have a hard time adjusting to any deviation or changes.
    3. You can also do 1 and 2 above with the actual TEXT and NOTES in front of you. This is doable, and with some NOTES preferable, but you are now approaching a tipping point/Omega point with DFW. You are saturating yourself with DFW on three sides.

    Members Reviews:
Great story, not my favorite narrator
    Any additional comments?
I have always liked Sarah Pekkanen's books, this one was no exception. I had trouble with this narrator though, I was very ready for it to be over because she was very difficult/annoying, not in her voice but in her cadence.
A nice mix of characters and contemporary times
What did you love best about Catching Air?
That the female and male characters were distinctly themselves. The cast did not all sound the same, as if often the case in modern american fiction.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Catching Air?
I can't really say there was one singular moment. The Vermont descriptions were pivotal, as was the ones of Florida.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
I did not like the performance so very much. It is very annoying when the reader shouts and talks very fast and "emotes" too much This is a book, not a TV advertisement. I will probably avoid this reader in the future.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Not applicable. I do not go to films as I am visually impaired.
    Any additional comments?
I like this author's work. I wish the reader had been more quiet. It is of note that I kept reading despite the annoying reader.

    Publisher's Summary:
Foreign Enemies and Traitors is set in the near future in an America that is creeping steadily toward socialist tyranny, in the midst of the second Great Depression. A year after earthquakes have devastated the Tennessee Valley, survivors are resisting demands by the federal government to relocate to FEMA refugee centers. United States National Guard units have proven ineffective at forcing these survivors out of the earthquake-damaged regions, due to their reluctance to employ deadly force against fellow Americans. As a result, the president has invited so-called foreign peacekeeping battalions to do the work of forcibly relocating the holdouts. The novel follows a small group of determined survivors in their resistance to the foreign enemies, and the American traitors who are their allies.

Every American needs to read this.
This book, along with the other books in this trilogy, is, hands down, the most important work of fiction any American can read. I could say the same for our European neighbors, as they seem to be fast tracked to the events contained in these books as well. Well done, Mr. Bracken. Mr. Kemp, thank you for taking so much time for the narration of this series.
A Great Trilogy That Kept Getting Better!
What made the experience of listening to Foreign Enemies and Traitors the most enjoyable?
The story is IMO, the best dytopian fiction written to date, and I have read all of the top 100 plus books of this genre. It is realistic, believable, exciting, and well written. It culminates the Trilogy and pulls all of the pieces and charecters together. This third book was more than 20 hours long and I drug out the last few hours because I hated for it to end.
What did you like best about this story?
The story started in Book 1 and was frighteningly plausable, and the charectors were real life and when put into their situations acted in a realistic manner... they were informed, the story put their life experience to work, and they improvised as they went. It made me feel that Americans have the will, the knowledge and the ability to match their circumstances and prevail. Not always win, not without heartache and loss, but Yankee ingenuity can win out. This book can be read stand-alone without reading 1 and 2 but why? You'll just go and buy them anyway once you get started in this...
Have you listened to any of Mike Kemps other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have listened to and enjoyed all three of Mike Kemp's Audible offerings, all with this trilogy. He has a rich (baritone?) voice with a bit of southern gentleman accent. To his credit he does not try to switch voices to sound like a woman or other changes in tone to separate charectors and the book is written in a manner that doesn't require it. His tone, volume and manner of speaking do vary as needed for emphasis and right as they should. I also have the hard copy and Mr. Kemp's performance is virtuallt flawless. His performance was good in book 1 and got even better as he went forward through Book 2 and very good in Book 3.
