    Gute Stimmen, gute Geschichte

    A little too long winded
Unfortunately for me the book was about 30% too long. I found a lot of the scenes went on for too long. I am a fan of detail but found it quite tedious in this book. I also found some of the plot and characters a little hard to believe. Spoiler alert, you never do find out about Adam's empire, it's more like Adam's Saga. Sadly it didn't quite work for me.
    Great listen!
I loved this book! In fact I hated to have it end! The book is so well written, and the narrator is so good that I felt like I slipped into that world! I strongly recommend this book and narrator!
    Excellent in every way
I enjoyed this book so much. It reminded me of the late Bryce Cortenay's writings. A really good story that kept me engaged from very first word until the last.
    Awesome story!
Have you ever read or listened to a book you couldn't put down? This was one of those experiences for me. This is the first time I have heard a story by Evan Green. I will be looking for others. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.
    A lovely story
Would you listen to Adam's Empire again? Why?
    Yes in a while
What did you like best about this story?
    It was easy to follow
Which character as performed by Richard Aspel was your favourite?
    Didn't have a favorite
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Cry, which is embarassing as I listen while at work
    Any additional comments?
Just one of the books you couldn,t put down!

    Publisher's Summary:
Richard Sharpe triumphs in the last battle of the war, only to find himself in worse peril when charged to recover Napoleon's treasure.
It is 1814. There are rumours that Napoleon is dead, or has run away, but Sharpe has one last battle to fight before he can lay down his sword. It is the battle for Toulouse. Little does he know it will be one of the bloodiest conflicts of the war. But Sharpe's war is not only the battle. Accused of stealing Napoleon's treasure, Sharpe must discover the unknown enemy who has tried to frame him - and his revenge is ingenious and devastating.
Soldier, hero, rogue - Sharpe is the man you always want on your side. Born in poverty, he joined the army to escape jail and climbed the ranks by sheer brutal courage. He knows no other family than the regiment of the 95th Rifles whose green jacket he proudly wears.
    Critic Reviews:
"Sharpe and his creator are national treasures." (Sunday Telegraph)
"Bernard Cornwell is a literary miracle. Year after year, hail, rain, snow, war and political upheavals fail to prevent him from producing the most entertaining and readable historical novels of his generation." (Daily Mail)
"Cornwell's narration is quite masterly and supremely well-researched." (Observer)
    Members Reviews:
    Another gem from Bernard Cornwell
Enthralling story always staggered by the detail, especially the battles scenes
Rupert Farley brings the stories to life
    Brilliant as always!
Rupert Farley was, as always, excellent, and the story was cracking too! Just looking forward to Waterloo now! Hopefully it won't be too long...
The worst of the Sharpe series.
Firstly, the performance is, as always with Rupert Farley, absolutely fantastic.
The problem is with the story itself. It is weak, jumps about and a number of the characters (main ones) change utterly, and very suddenly. My main issues are with Friedrichson and Jane, both of whom are utterly different to the characters they are in earlier books, and not in a good way.
Listen to see what develops, but be warned; it really is not very good.

In the Balkans, preparing a thrust northwards into Central Europe to block the Russians and Austrians, a horde of Muslim mercenaries is gathering. They are inclined toward Napoleon because of his conversion to Islam during the Egyptian campaign, but they will not move without a shipment of gold ingots from Sheik Ibn Hazm which, according to British intelligence, is on its way via camel caravan to the coast of North Africa. It is this gold that Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin must at all costs intercept. The fate of Europe hinges on their desperate mission.

    Thin story line
Great reading performance. But the content of O'Brien's yarn is thin soup. Methinks he was coming to the end of his string with this series and we need more nourishment.
    Best narration ever !!
A gripping yarn as always and perhaps the best of the series. Just sorry it is finished.
Great storey and fabulously narrated .
    At last
Thank Goodness they have continued the series. Have been waiting over a year for the next installment after the Wine dark sea. Slightly out of sequence but finally here. These books are perfectly narrated by Ric Jerrom, his voice portrays the 2 main protagonists perfectly and conjur up both Jack and Stephen perfectly. Enjoyable as always and will now finish my collection out .

    AMAZING!!!!!!!
Such an amazing book. Definitely my favorite book series and favorite author. About to buy The Long Hunt!!!
    Heroism, Revenge, and Atypical Romance!
I am enjoying the heck out of this series. This is the third book, and introduces a love element that is entirely sweet and fascinating, since they're from such different backgrounds. Instead of the typical romance between a noble and a commoner, this is between a remorseless warrior and pious nun. And the overarching heroic revenge tale takes a stride forward.
Historic fiction isn't always my bag of tea, since it can be dry and heavy-handed, but this series has great character development and well-integrated research. If you want to read about vikings, make this high on your 'to read' pile.
    That escalated
I really enjoyed this book in the series. The main character really blossoms and becomes the hero, gets rich and gets the girl. What more can you ask for
Have to admit it's getting better.
This third book is getting more interesting. The historical background adds more colorful to this story. I will go on to see how the"revenge is finalized".

    Publisher's Summary:
Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Wars of the Roses: Trinity, the second instalment in Conn Iggulden's thrilling Wars of the Roses trilogy.
1454: King Henry VI has remained all but exiled in Windsor Castle, struck down by his illness for over a year, his eyes vacant, his mind a blank. His fiercely loyal wife and Queen, Margaret of Anjou, safeguards her husband's interests, hoping that her son Edward will one day know the love of his father.
Richard Duke of York, Protector of the Realm, extends his influence throughout the kingdom with each month that Henry slumbers. The Earls of Salisbury and Warwick make up a formidable trinity with Richard, and together they seek to break the support of those who would raise their colours in the name of Henry and his Queen. But when the King unexpectedly recovers his senses and returns to London to reclaim his throne, the balance of power is once again thrown into turmoil.
The clash of the Houses of Lancaster and York will surely mean a war to tear England apart . . .

Queen Margaret and Richard, Duke of York
Perhaps if you are an historical purist, this book is not for you. But if you are looking for a rattling good read, well told and filled with larger than life characters from one of England's most colourful periods of the past,, of ambition, betrayal, hate and bloody battles, then I highly recommend Trinity and the others in this series.
    Great book but dodgy recording
The story is brilliant but is let down by a bad recording. Sentences and sometimes entire passages are repeated. At one point the recording goes silent for several seconds only to resume, sentences later, as if nothing had happened.
    Fabulous!
If you could sum up Wars of the Roses: Trinity in three words, what would they be?
    Plots! Intrigue! Action!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Wars of the Roses: Trinity?
Some of the shocking way people are treated spring to mind, torture, be-headings, betrayal. Its fascinating.
What does Roy McMillan bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
Great characterization. He reads beautifully and I felt I could get to know the characters so much better.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I frequently stayed sitting in my car outside the office waiting for the chapter to end so I could go into work!
    Great fun
Exactle what you want a bit of historical fiction to be. Informative, lifelike characters and flavourful
An excellent way to recount history
This was absolutely first-rate and I eagerly await the next book in the series! A brilliant story and an engaging narration. A must for any history buff or expert alike

    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
An enthralling literary debut that evokes one of the most momentous events in history, the birth of printing in medieval Germany - a story of invention, intrigue, and betrayal.
Youthful, ambitious Peter Schoeffer is on the verge of professional success as a scribe in Paris when his foster father, the wealthy merchant and bookseller Johann Fust, summons him home to corruption- riddled, feud-plagued Mainz to meet "a most amazing man."
Johann Gutenberg, a driven and caustic inventor, has devised a revolutionary - and, to some, blasphemous - method of bookmaking: a machine he calls a printing press. Fust is financing Gutenberg's workshop, and he orders Peter to become Gutenberg's apprentice. Resentful at having to abandon a prestigious career as a scribe, Peter begins his education in the "darkest art."
As his skill grows, so too does his admiration for Gutenberg and his dedication to their daring venture: printing copies of the Holy Bible. But when outside forces align against them, Peter finds himself torn between two father figures - the generous Fust and the brilliant, mercurial Gutenberg, who inspires Peter to achieve his own mastery.
Caught between the genius and the merchant, the old ways and the new, Peter and the men he admires must work together to prevail against overwhelming obstacles in a battle that will change history - and irrevocably transform them all.
    Members Reviews:
    Illuminating (no pun intended)
The writing and performance splendidly brings to life the people and times that surrounded the creation of Gutenberg's printing press innovations. The descriptions of the physical and artistic effort involved in the first mass printing of the bible were particularly interesting for me. Not so much details of the intricacies of the political/religious turmoil of the times, although of course those conditions influenced nearly all of the behaviors of the central characters, outside of their personalities, while also providing suspense that drives the "plot" for this book. A thank you goes to the author for providing an Afterword in which the known true facts of his story are furnished.
A feeling of the 15th century
So many historical novels just place modern characters in the past. This one gives you insight in a different world and a different way of thinking. I enjoyed listening to this even though the occasional mispronunciations made me wince. Does anyone pronounce "feral" as feeral? Perhaps some people do.
    Interesting and entertaining
You feel the fear, determination, confusion, and abandon required to forge this new means of communication.
A book about printing books? Yes!
I love when a book sends me out on the Internet to get more information about it's characters and/or events. Gutenberg's Apprentice was that kind of book. Everyone knows Gutenberg invented the first printing press and that it was a turning point for civilization. This book delves down into the how and who to enrich this historical trivia. Think that sounds dull? Not at all. Alix Christie brought this to life, with tight pacing, fleshed out characters and wonderful prose.
The apprentice in question, Peter Schoeffer, was destined to be a scribe clerk for the (Catholic) church. He's in Paris loving his life. Then his adopted father demands he return to Mainz Germany. He is told off by his father to work for Gutenberg as an apprentice, much to his dismay and disgust.

    Publisher's Summary:
Edge of Eternity is the sweeping, passionate conclusion to Ken Follett's extraordinary historical epic, The Century Trilogy.
Throughout these books, Follett has followed the fortunes of five intertwined families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they make their way through the 20th century. Now they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the enormous social, political, and economic turmoil of the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements, and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution - and rock and roll.
East German teacher Rebecca Hoffman discovers she's been spied on by the Stasi for years and commits an impulsive act that will affect her family for the rest of their lives.George Jakes, the child of a mixed-race couple, bypasses a corporate law career to join Robert F. Kennedy's Justice Department, and finds himself in the middle not only of the seminal events of the civil rights battle, but a much more personal battle of his own.Cameron Dewar, the grandson of a senator, jumps at the chance to do some official and unofficial espionage for a cause he believes in, only to discover that the world is a much more dangerous place than he'd imagined.Dimka Dvorkin, a young aide to Nikita Khrushchev, becomes a prime agent both for good and for ill as the United States and the Soviet Union race to the brink of nuclear war, while his twin sister, Tania, carves out a role that will take her from Moscow to Cuba to Prague to Warsaw - and into history.
As always with Follett, the historical background is brilliantly researched and rendered, the action fast-moving, the characters rich in nuance and emotion. With the hand of a master, he brings us into a world we thought we knew but now will never seem the same again.

    Sorry
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I was very disappointed that the book was abridged. That should have been selling point. I would really like to know that before buying the title.
If youve listened to books by Ken Follett before, how does this one compare?
It finished the trilogy for me. Liked his other books more.
What about John Lees performance did you like?
I do like John Lee./>He's part of the story for me.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Like I said it finished the trilogyy for me. I would like to know what I missed.
    Not Marked Well
The book is great and a wonderful conclusion to the series. However this VERSION IS ABRIDGED. It was not marked well. I didn't realize until I was already several hours in and I didn't want to rebuy and then re-listen.
Great version for someone not looking for a 25+hr commitment.
    excellent for a TV series!
it is very effective to see the World Wars and civil rights struggles through the eyes of 5 families on all sides. If this was a TV series perhaps people would remember all that has gone before to create what we have now. and remember the real price of war and tyranny!!!
Great story. Very easy to listen to. Makes a long journey in the car go quickly

    Loved it!
Lauren Willig's Pink Carnation series is absolutely one of my favorite reads and I especially love them on Audible when narrated by Kate Reading (who has read all but one). While they are all enjoyable, this one took me back to the original book that started it all, The Secret History of the Pink Carnation. It was just delightful from beginning to end. If you are one of those lucky folks that haven't yet sampled the Pink series, I envy you. Do yourself a favor and dive in. Only one caution - they should be read in order since the characters are all intertwined and their progression needs to be followed logically.
    Great addition to the series
I really liked this book. It was a lot of fun. Okay, there weren't many spies. And Eloise comes across as a 14 year old at times. (That could be Kate Reading's reading of her. That's why I gave the performance only 4 stars. At least she pronounced "Eloise" right this time.) But it's an entertaining book.
Sally's story is funny and easy to read. I totally enjoyed it. I'm so glad there's one more book in the Pink Carnation series. I really like Lauren Willig's books.
    Not too impressed.
I hate to sound so cynical, but it seems to me that Willig has made it to the end of the garden with this one. I am not very impressed with the story. It leaves much to be desired, and she seems to be killing off her 21st century heroine's character. I hope the next flower installment is a little less predictable.
    Really enjoyed this book!
I really enjoyed this book and I love Sally and Lucien, but I missed Ms. Gwen and Jane. I know that Ms. Gwen was included in the book, but her role was minimal. I actually think that I liked Eloise's and Collin's story the best. I can't wait to see what happens with them in the next book.
I really do love the Pink Carnation series. Lauren Willig is such a talented writer. She can take you back in time 200 plus years or 10 years and make you feel like you are right there with the characters.

Wrapping Up an Excellent Civil War Historical Fiction Series
This is the fourth and final (it appears) book in P.G. Nagle's "Civil War in the Far West" series. The series started with "Glorietta Pass", and continued with "The Guns of Valverde", and then "Galveston".
I think this book really demonstrates how Ms Nagle has grown into her writing abilities. The first book was well researched and there were several strong characters but the plot seemed to be pretty basic and even predictable. But as she progressed through this series she just got better and better. The research was still outstanding, exhaustive even, but her characters were better written. The plots take place against historical realities so that, of course, can't be changed. But how her fictional characters act and interact with others has become delightful. This last book in the series illustrates that very well, with her long-time character, confederate officer Jamie Russell, becoming truly multi-dimensional.
Ms Nagle's wartime action scenes are very well done as well. I felt like I was there, not in any kind of heroic battle sense but definitely feeling the fear, the exhaustion, and the filth of battle. Jamie leads his gun battery and is in the thick of battles...you can just hear the explosions and see the men around him struggle to do their duty. The Red River itself, a tributary to the Mississippi River, takes on a life of its own, especially as the Union boats try to free their ships from shallow waters in order to secure the entire Mississippi, a crutial strategy for the war.
All in all, this wraps up a very good historical fiction series. I just love it when a novelist takes great pains to get the history right. Ms Nagle doesn't scrimp on that for sure. I was happy to see it progress but I wish there were one more novel to finish out the war. This one does take us up to where the end is in sight though, so perhaps another would be anti-climactic.
Wish this wasn't the last of the series!
Super follow up to Galveston!...the "behind the scenes" history. ...added so much....wish there was another after this...I will miss the characters ...wish the series didn't end here.
    Great Read!
This is the fourth book in PG Nagel's series; she's one of my favorite authors! I would recommend any of her books
