Three Out Of Four Fantastical Adventures - And One Not Fantastical
This fifth book in the Sinbad, The New Voyages series contains four short stories. There are three about Sinbad and crew, and one about three of the supporting characters alone.
The first tale, Island Of The Puppet Master, has Sinbad and crew trying to overcome a puppet/clockworks master in a land of magical clockworks.
The second story, The Desert Contest, tells of three of Sinbad's constant companions. These three, however, are staying behind, while Sinbad and the rest of the crew are on a special mission. Two of these three are kidnapped in order to fight in desert tribal fighting contest.
The third entry, Sinbad And The Sinister Statue, has Sinbad and the whole crew traveling to a legendary isle in order to recover a lost statue for a ruler. However, the dangerous magical guardians have to be overcome.
The fourth and last adventure, Sinbad And The Devil's Sea, has Sinbad and crew sailing in the mystical Devil's Sea in the area of Japan. This provides the female samurai in Sinbad's crew to play a main part in the story. It also obviously includes creatures and beings from Japanese mythology and legend, a first in this series. .
As can be seen, three of the stories have titles conjuring exciting adventures in exotic lands containing fantastical monsters and magical beings. However, The Desert Contest, as the title implies, has no strange monsters or magical beings, not even a lone sorcerer. There are no fantasy elements at all in the story - just a kidnapping, various fights in several contests, and an escape attempt from the kidnappers. This is also a first in the series - no fantasy elements. It's a good adventure story, but not for a book of Sinbad tales. Tales of Sinbad to me invoke a sense of wonder and adventure in exotic unknown lands containing fantastical monsters and beings, usually in Arabic and Asian settings. For this reason, I would give this story three stars, while the other three stories are five stars. So this is why I gave the rating of four stars average for the whole book.
I look forward to more fantasy-adventure sailings aboard Sinbad's ship, the Blue Nymph.
