Hearts & Minds Bookstore's Best Books of 2015, Applied Theology, Basic Christian Living, Whole Life Discipleship
We're all infected with a spiritual disease. Its name is shame. Whether we realize it or not, shame affects every aspect of our personal lives and vocational endeavors. It seeks to destroy our identity in Christ, replacing it with a damaged version of ourselves that results in unhealed pain and brokenness. But God is telling a different story for your life.
Psychiatrist Curt Thompson unpacks the soul of shame, revealing its ubiquitous nature and neurobiological roots. He also provides the theological and practical tools necessary to dismantle shame, based on years of researching its damaging effects and counseling people to overcome those wounds. Thompson's expertise and compassion will help you identify your own pains and struggles and find freedom from the lifelong negative messages that bind you. Rewrite the story of your life and embrace healing and wholeness as you discover and defeat shame's insidious agenda.

    Interesting...
This is very good for anyone who is feeling deep shame or having trouble getting through this feeling. It explains everything you want to know about shame. Some are obvious and then some are not so obvious. This could be extremely helpful to a lot of people. Well written and narrated. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
    Wonderful & Annoying
I will say this is a 5 star in defining, revealing what shame is and what to do about it.
I dont like the doctrinal push on his view of God and Christ. I thought no as a psychiatrist he should be mindful that not everyone is a Catholic or a Christian or a believer in God. He should have stayed in the psychological wisdom the Bible does provide.. which he does 90% of the time - but as readers we become your patient or student. This though your book you enforce God, the Trinity and that will be disturbing to many listeners.
However as I bypass those issues and some of the rambling tangents ... I really do think this book is going to help me.

  • How to Think Audiobook by Alan Jacobs

    Title: How to Think
Subtitle: A Survival Guide for a World at Odds
    Author: Alan Jacobs
    Narrator: P. J. Ochlan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 21 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-17-17
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 58 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
How to Think is a contrarian treatise on why we're not as good at thinking as we assume - but how recovering this lost art can rescue our inner lives from the chaos of modern life.
As a celebrated cultural critic and a writer for national publications like The Atlantic and Harper's, Alan Jacobs has spent his adult life belonging to communities that often clash in America's culture wars. And in his years of confronting the big issues that divide us - political, social, religious - Jacobs has learned that many of our fiercest disputes occur not because we're doomed to be divided but because the people involved simply aren't thinking.
Most of us don't want to think, Jacobs writes. Thinking is trouble. Thinking can force us out of familiar, comforting habits, and it can complicate our relationships with like-minded friends. Finally, thinking is slow, and that's a problem when our habits of consuming information (mostly online) leave us lost in the spin cycle of social media, partisan bickering, and confirmation bias.
In this smart, endlessly entertaining book, Jacobs diagnoses the many forces that act on us to prevent thinking - forces that have only worsened in the age of Twitter, "alternative facts", and information overload - and he also dispels the many myths we hold about what it means to think well. (For example: It's impossible to "think for yourself".)
Drawing on sources as far-flung as novelist Marilynne Robinson, basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain, British philosopher John Stuart Mill, and Christian theologian C. S. Lewis, Jacobs digs into the nuts and bolts of the cognitive process, offering hope that each of us can reclaim our mental lives from the impediments that plague us all. Because if we can learn to think together, maybe we can learn to live together, too.
    Critic Reviews:
"Witty, engaging, and ultimately hopeful, Jacobs's guide is sorely needed in a society where partisanship too often trumps the pursuit of knowledge." (
    Publishers Weekly)
"Just when it feels like we've all lost our minds, here comes Alan Jacobs's
How to Think, a book infused with the thoughtfulness, generosity, and humor of a lifelong teacher. Do what I did: Sign off social media, find a cozy spot to read, and get your mind back again. A mindful book for our mindless times." (Austin Kleon, best-selling author of
    Steal Like an Artist
    )
"I disagree passionately with Alan Jacobs about a number of very important things, but this indispensable book shows me how to take him by the hand while we argue, rather than the throat. In troublingly stupid times, it offers a toolbox for the restoration of nuance, self-knowledge and cognitive generosity." (Francis Spufford, author of
    Golden Hill and
    Unapologetic)

How to think is as much art as science
Alan Jacobs is one of my favorite essayists. He was a professor at Wheaton when I was there (although I never had him). He is now a professor at Baylor. I have read a number of his books, from a biography on CS Lewis, to several collections of essays, to a history of the Book of Common Prayer, my favorite book on reading, a cultural history of the concept of Original Sin, and now How to Think.
I wasnt completely sure what I was getting into when I picked this up yesterday morning (it released yesterday).

The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump describes the consensus view held by two dozen psychiatrists and psychologists that Donald Trump is dangerously mentally ill and that he presents a clear and present danger to the nation and our own mental health.
    This is not normal.
Since the start of Donald Trump's presidential run, one question has quietly but urgently permeated the observations of concerned citizens: What is wrong with him? Constrained by the American Psychiatric Association's "Goldwater rule", which inhibits mental health professionals from diagnosing public figures they have not personally examined, many of those qualified to answer this question have shied away from discussing the issue at all. The public has thus been left to wonder whether he is mad, bad, or both.
In The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump, 27 psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health experts argue that, in Mr. Trump's case, their moral and civic "duty to warn" America supersedes professional neutrality. They then explore Trump's symptoms and potentially relevant diagnoses to find a complex, if also dangerously mad, man.
Philip Zimbardo and Rosemary Sword, for instance, explain Trump's impulsivity in terms of "unbridled and extreme present hedonism." Craig Malkin speaks about pathological narcissism and politics as a lethal mix. Gail Sheehy, on a lack of trust that exceeds paranoia. Lance Dodes, on sociopathy. Robert Jay Lifton, on the "malignant normality" that can set in everyday life if psychiatrists do not speak up.
His madness is catching, too. From the trauma people have experienced under the Trump administration to the cult-like characteristics of his followers, he has created unprecedented mental health consequences across our nation and beyond.
It's not all in our heads. It's in his.
Expertly compiled by author and editor Bandy X. Lee, this insightful audiobook is mental fuel for the concerned, contemplative listener.

    Author: William Richards
    Narrator: River Kanoff
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 25 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-24-17
    Publisher: Wetware Media
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 22 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Sacred Knowledge is the first well-documented, sophisticated account of the effect of psychedelics on biological processes, human consciousness, and revelatory religious experiences. Based on nearly three decades of legal research with volunteers, William A. Richards argues that, if used responsibly and legally, psychedelics have the potential to assuage suffering and constructively affect the quality of human life.
Richards's analysis contributes to social and political debates over the responsible integration of psychedelic substances into modern society. His book serves as an invaluable resource for listeners who, whether spontaneously or with the facilitation of psychedelics, have encountered meaningful, inspiring, or even disturbing states of consciousness and seek clarity about their experiences. Testing the limits of language and conceptual frameworks, Richards makes the most of experiential phenomena that stretch our conception of reality, advancing new frontiers in the study of belief, spiritual awakening, psychiatric treatment, and social well-being. His findings enrich humanities and scientific scholarship, expanding work in philosophy, anthropology, theology, and religious studies and bringing depth to research in mental health, psychotherapy, and psychopharmacology.

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Prizewinning investigative journalist Art Levine offers a no-holds-barred and crucial call to action for America's broken mental health system.
The mental health system in America is hardly a front-burner issue, despite lip service about reform after a tragic mass killing. Yet every American should care deeply about fixing a system a presidential commission reported was in "shambles". By some measures, about 20 percent of Americans have some sort of mental health condition, including the most vulnerable among us - veterans, children, the elderly, prisoners, and the homeless. With Mental Health, Inc., award-winning investigative journalist Art Levine delivers a Shock Doctrine-style exposé of the failures of our out-of-control, profits-driven mental health system, with a special emphasis on the failures of the pharmaceuticals industry, including the treatment of children with antipsychotics and disastrous PTSD protocols for veterans.
Levine provides narrative portraits of victims and people who won unexpected victories against their illnesses by getting smart, personalized help, as well as snapshots of corrupt Big Pharma executives and researchers who created fraudulent marketing schemes. Levine also tells the dramatic David vs. Goliath stories of a few brave reformers, including Harvard-trained psychiatrist and researcher Dr. Stefan Kruszewski, who has acted as a whistle-blower in numerous cases, leading to major federal and state settlements, as well as spotlighting pioneering clinicians challenging outmoded, drug-and-sedate practices that leave 90 percent of people with serious mental illness too disabled to work.
By taking a comprehensive look at mental health abuses and dangerous, ineffective practices as well as pointing toward solutions for creating a system for effective, proven, and compassionate care, Art Levine's essential Mental Health, Inc. is a call to action for politicians and citizens alike.

    Publisher's Summary:
For fans of Deepak Chopra, Rudy Tanzi, and Andrew Newberg. A renowned behavioral neurologist provides insights to some of the most curious spiritual questions we all face.
    Is there a God?
It's a question billions of people have asked since the dawn of time. You would think by now we'd have a satisfactory, universal answer. No such luck...or maybe we do and we just need to look in the right place. For Dr. Jay Lombard that place is the brain, and more importantly the mind, that center of awareness and consciousness that creates reality.
In The Mind of God, Dr. Lombard employs case studies from his own behavioral neurology practice to explore the spiritual conundrums that we all ask ourselves: What is the nature of God? Does my life have purpose? What's the meaning of our existence? Are we free? What happens to us when we die?
For Lombard, these metaphysical questions are a jumping-off point for exploring the brain in search of the seat of the soul. It is neuroscience, the author contends, and how we and our brains interpret what's going on around us that can lead us to a deeper and more fulfilling faith.
Mixing his personal experiences in the medical field (including compelling cases such as the male patient who really thought he was pregnant and a woman who literally scared herself to death) along with his own visionary insight into spiritual experience, Lombard has much to tell us about the nature and power of belief - and what we can do to focus our beliefs in a positive direction. If you want to find more meaning in your life or are searching for a deeper understanding of why we believe what we believe, then this book can lead to an exciting transformation in the way you see and understand the world around you. With cutting-edge research and provocative case studies, renowned behavioral neurologist provides insights to some of the most curious spiritual questions of mortality.
    Members Reviews:
I understand Dr.Lombard's mind after the book but I do not feel closer to god or the mind of god
A promise to answer some fundamental spiritual questions was not delivered. The questions were raised and researched historically but the platitudes barely enriched. I was very disappointed but I did enjoy the integration of neurology and spirituality at times.

Are you living the life you thought you always wanted but feel that something is still missing? Do you think you should be happier than you are, considering all that you have? Have you achieved your professional or personal goals but still feel racked with insecurities, anxiety, or depression...and can't figure out why?

Determined to help herself and her patients, Dr. Yusim spent more than 15 years studying and conducting research and came to a startling conclusion: this lingering feeling of dissatisfaction coincides with spiritual neglect. Once she helped her patients address their spiritual and psychological needs, she saw radical improvements in their happiness levels and quality of life.

    Publisher's Summary:
We live in the age of the individual.
We are supposed to be slim, prosperous, happy, extroverted and popular. This is our culture's image of the perfect self. We see this person everywhere: in advertising, in the press, all over social media. We're told that to be this person, you just have to follow your dreams, that our potential is limitless, that we are the source of our own success.
But this model of the perfect self can be extremely dangerous. People are suffering under the torture of this impossible fantasy. Unprecedented social pressure is leading to increases in depression and suicide. Where does this ideal come from? Why is it so powerful? Is there any way to break its spell?
To answer these questions, Selfie takes us from the shores of Ancient Greece, through the Christian Middle Ages, to the self-esteem evangelists of 1980s California, the rise of narcissism and the selfie generation, and right up to the era of hyperindividualistic neoliberalism in which we live now.
It tells the extraordinary story of the person we all know so intimately - our self.

    Brilliant
This is one of the best audiobooks I have listened to - and I've listened to a lot! A fantastic combination of sociology, psychology and history - with a bit of politics and economics thrown in. This is the first time I've listened to a book and found it resonating with me, personally ("but that's ME") in places.
A few bonuses - his concise dissections of the financial crisis and the Brexit / Trump phenomenons are pithy and eminently quotable. Also Jack Hawkins reading - and his novel interview with Storr right at the end - are both fabulous.
Oh, and my score was 7 out of 40. Listen to the book, and you'll know what I mean.
A book for for our Time
Thought provoking, revealing and enjoyable. We are not who we think we are, we are not even what others think we are - We are what we think others think we are - This and the destruction of the scientific base for the Rogerian philosophy of Total Positive Regard are significant revelations. Well argued, compelling story telling at its best and isn't that what we have relied upon to form our opinions through the ages. Absolutely worth the read.
    A calming exciting truth.
A refreshing eye-opener with some calming truths. Refreshing to hear solidly researched material in our world of spin and nonsense. l loved it. Thank you.
    So so good
Couldn't recommend this book more - favourite non fiction I've ever read! And the voice over provides really entertaining voices for different people who are interviewed. Really enjoyed and learnt a lot
Abandon hope all ye who download here
I have no idea why, but at some point in the production of this audiobook, an executive decision was made to have the narrator dramatically perform the voices in the text.

    Publisher's Summary:
From a leading expert, a groundbreaking book on the science of play, and its essential role in fueling our happiness and intelligence throughout our lives.
We've all seen the happiness on the face of a child while playing in the school yard. Or the blissful abandon of a golden retriever racing across a lawn. This is the joy of play. By definition, play is purposeless, all-consuming, and fun. But as Dr. Stuart Brown illustrates, play is anything but trivial. It is a biological drive as integral to our health as sleep or nutrition. We are designed by nature to flourish through play. Particularly in tough times, we need to play more than ever, as it's the very means by which we prepare for the unexpected, search out new solutions, and remain optimistic.
A fascinating blend of cutting-edge neuroscience, biology, psychology, social science, and inspiring human stories of the transformative power of play, this book proves why play just might be the most important work we can ever do.
    Critic Reviews:

Message and content great, professional reader too serious for a book called Play!
Publishers and authors should really pay A lot more attention to the voice quality of the professional readers they use. This reader almost killed the whole book for me. I had to speed it up just to tolerate it. How can you read a book on play with such a fake-y and rigid sounding delivery? Please, next time find a regular, relaxed person with an ability to read a book in a fun, conversational way. Thanks for listening!
    Great Read!
Loved it! Brings so much understanding to what it is, we as adults need in our lives!!
    Amazing book
this book is based on how everybody should play and this book has taught me so much I loved it
Didn't make it past the first chapter
I purchased this because Brene brown recommended in one of her books. I could not get past how monotone the readers voice sounded. First bad experience with audible. Luckily I was able to return. I think I may just purchase it in paperback form.
Scholarly but "playful" approach to the subject of Play.
I really enjoyed this audio book! The vastness of the subject matter amazed me. Not just about the importance of play for children, the book lays why play is important, no necessary, for adults too. I will listen again sometime soon but I will be first investigating more play pursuits for myself. I highly recommend this book.
