    Perfect!
This book was tremendous, and it was very well read. The story of the decline and fall of the Compson family is dramatic, heart-breaking, and written in such a way that when the blows fall and the book finally ends, it seems as though a portion of the listener's world has ended with it. THe reading is done so well that the voice never seems to come between the words and the listener, but rather to become part of the story, enriching it further. If you haven't read this book, or you haven't read it in a long time, go ahead and get this one, because you'll find so many things in it you've either forgotten or never noticed were there.
    Remarkable Achievement
This made me fall in love with Faulkner all over again. I was skeptical that this novel, difficult to understand with its constant shifts in time, could be absorbed through the ear without the clues of the printed page. Although it isn't easy, the joy of hearing Faulkner's magnificent language more than compensates for the effort. If you told me I had to choose between reading and listening, after this experience I would pick the latter. The characters come alive in a new and memorable way. I am just praying they can get Grover Gardner to do Absalom! Absalom!
    Hang in
Grover Gardner is the best reader I have heard, and he is outstanding with this effort (which is a trial). Best to read a synopsis of the book before listening, or as I might have done, you would give up. I hung in after the first two sections and was rewarded. You will be as well.
Great book; better to read it.
This is a wonderful, skillful book that lives up to all of its praise through the years. It is also a terrible choice to listen to this book if it is your first time reading it. The nuance of the writing is lost due to the fact that the original text offsets sudden changes in time through alternating italics and normal typeset. This tends to make the first section (Benjy's section) especially difficult to follow and makes the first time reader confused even more than the complicated text. If, on the other hand, you are a second time reader this audiobook is a pleasurable experience. Be warned: the audio quality fluctuates (this is an older recording). If you are listening to this book for the first time it is helpful to get a copy of the Cliff's Notes or similar pamphlet for a couple of bucks and browse it as you listen. It makes the narrative less confusing without ruining the drama.
    Appreciating Faulkner
Listening to Grover Gardner's reading of TSATF gave me a greater appreciation for Faulkner's language than ever before. The characters came alive for me in ways they haven't through my reading.
Although the initial section narrated by Benjy is difficult to follow, a second listening to it made it quite clear. Faulkner has written a fascinating description of the unraveling of what we today call a dysfuntional family.

    Title: Walden
    Author: Henry David Thoreau
    Narrator: William Hope

Length: 5 hrs and 12 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-15-05
    Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 63 votes
    Genres: Classics, American Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
In 1845 Henry David Thoreau, one of the principal New England Transcendentalists, left the town for the country. Beside the lake of Walden, he built himself a log cabin and returned to nature, to observe and reflect, while surviving on $8 a year. From this experience emerged one of the great classics of American literature, a deeply personal reaction against the commercialism and materialism that he saw as the main impulses of mid-19th century America.
    Editorial Reviews:
Walden is organized like a conversation. Thoreau moves from topic to topic in an easy flow, touching on politics, economics, and spirituality. William Hope's performance of the work brings out this quality wonderfully. Narrating slowly, with regular pauses, as if engaged in a conversation with a close friend, Hope allows readers to hear the rhythms of Thoreau's prose. But however it rambles, the essay always returns to the loving descriptions of nature and insightful reflections on personal identity that Thoreau developed in his cabin by Walden Pond. This is an accessible adaptation of an American classic.

    A little dry
I'm on a classics kick so I picked this one too. I have to give this one a big YAWN. But the book does have redeeming qualities from philosophical standpoint. The author's desire to "live life on purpose" and to question the precepts of modern society is relevant 160 years later.
Love the book Hated the perfomance
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
    Book yes. This reading no.
It sounded as though it was being read by Archie Bunker. I wish I could have a refund.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Walden?
Walden is a wonderful visual piece.
How could the performance have been better?
Having it narrated by Rupert Degas!
Was Walden worth the listening time?
Not this version narrated by Mr Hope!
    Any additional comments?
There should be a means to obtain a refund or a credit when something is this awful!

The Narrator Brings the Book Alive
I can't believe some found the narrator sub par. This guy did a great job with tough material and did so in a way that kept the story moving. I could never have read this book by myself and finished it. My hat is off to the narrator, excellent job. Bravo.
As for the content of the unabridged book, be prepared for lengthy dissertations on what the color white means, how whale is best prepared and whale anatomy. This book is best listen to in small segments but in the end you will be left with a sense of accomplishment for sticking it through. You will also be rewarded with a much better understanding of what it must have been like to be on a whaling vessel in the late 1800's.
    Gripping despite the minutiae
I got it in my head last summer to read Moby Dick again after 30 years. Don't know what I was thinking, as I could not get past the first few chapters, I kept getting distracted and losing interest. On a whim, I downloaded this reading on Audible. I absolutely LOVED it! The narrator's unique voice and his colorful portrayal of the various (memorable!) characters in this long, rambling novel kept me fascinated and involved from the first minute to the last, many many hours later. In fact, when the novel ended, I kept respectful silence in my car for about a week, then listened to the whole thing over again, as there were many details that I seemed to have lost track of as the hours went on. Second time round, I was amazed at the symbolism, echoes, foreshadowing, and meditations on good vs. evil. I also kept trying to find clues as to why this is so often regarded as a great "American" novel--why American as opposed to any other country's? Still not sure about that, though I'm sure there are treatises and Ph.D's devoted to the topic if I wanted to pursue it. At any rate, I have come away from this narrator's reading convinced of Melville's brilliance and uniqueness as a novelist. I have simply never read (well, heard) a book like this one. I really think it's easier to have this novel read to you than to read it on the page. The discursions and treatises on whaling, shipping, the color white, depictions of the whale in art, blubber, ropes, shipboard carpentry and all the rest are fascinating when this particular narrator tells you about them in his distinctive accents and intonations.

"Big Sur's a humane, precise account of the extraordinary ravages of alcohol delirium tremens on Kerouac, a superior novelist who had strength to complete his poetic narrative, a task few scribes so afflicted have accomplished...others crack up. Here we meet San Francisco's poets and recognize hero Dean Moriarty 10 years after On the Road. Jack Kerouac was a 'writer,' as his great peer W.S. Burroughs says, and here at the peak of his suffering humorous genius he wrote through his misery to end with 'Sea,' a brilliant poem appended, on the hallucinatory sounds of the Pacific Ocean at Big Sur." - Allen Ginsberg

Insightful View of the Dark Sides of the Beats
This novel is sometimes mistakenly viewed as a drunkalogue by a practicing alcoholic on the verge of insanity. But while Jack Kerouac was a sometime crazy booze hound, he was also a very insightful writer. And yes, when he was living through this particular bad San Francisco trip, he was a sometimes drunk and full-time crackup. However. When he got back home to his mother's house on the East Coast and wrote this book in the solitude that protected his gift, he was clear-eyed. In the hours and days of his lucidity, he detailed his alcoholism, he unflinchingly recorded the flaws in his character that brought on his nervous breakdown. So here we have the Beat Generation not as the Disney characters of nostalgia but as the good, bad and ugly people they were when a very introverted Catholic/Buddhist writer with a ton of talent hung out with them and hung in with them to the point of his own self-destruction.
Tom Parker, as always, does a great job bringing these mostly long-dead voices back to life.
    A great listen
    Parker is an excellent reader.
Big Sur is a monologue, a descent into Kerouac's alcoholic Inferno. Kerouac could only write this having come out of it--for a time--but while I listened to Parker speaking to me in Kerouac's voice, I too felt the need for some stability, some sense of permanence in this all too hectic world.
And while Robinson Jeffers is the better Big Sur poet ("Continent's End" et. al.), this novel elicits the state of mind of an unstable man coming into this landscape to be nearly wholly worn down by the rhythms of the sea, the landscape, humanity and his own disease.
There is humor here too, but I responded strongly to the tragic elements in Parker's evocative reading of this powerful book.
(Parker really gets Cody's voice, just like he got McMurphy's in Kesey's novel--they're similar characters. I can't wait for him to record Visions of Cody.)
Arguably one of Kerouacs best novels
Jack Kerouacs prose, like that of James Joyce, gets into your head and races over the reticulations and slaloms down the grooves kicking up powder everywhere. Once you have tasted his best work there is no going back to the safety of the restrained and structured prose of Dostoyevsky, Faulkner, and Hemingway. Big Sur is arguably one of Kerouacs best novels. It documents the personal crests and troughs between his initial fame that catapults him into the limelight and a downhill slide to what eventually becomes a self-destructive, terminal binge. It takes a much brighter look at his experience tower sitting on Desolation Peak than does Desolation Angels.

    Publisher's Summary:
Young Henry Fleming used to play soldier and dream of being a hero, but when he faces his first battle - the Battle of Chancellorsville - he finds that heroism is not at all what he had expected. Shells burst in front of him like strange flowers, gunfire ripped toward him in great crackling sheets of flame, and all around him, blue-coated figures lie still on the blood-drenched grass. Remarkably, Stephen Crane wrote this realistic tale of the terror of war without ever witnessing a battle.
    Editorial Reviews:
In this re-release of a well-known classic, Frank Muller creates a world made for audio. His performance lifts the words from the page and turns them into flesh-and-blood characters with aches and torments. Each accent fits the character, and each character sounds authentic. Union soldier Henry Fleming faces his first battle and runs away. Muller turns Henrys shame at his act of cowardice into something as tangible as the red badge he longs for. Mullers pacing is exceptional in battle sequences, and his quiet moments can be tender. Henrys plight combined with Mullers vocal artistry makes this utterly engrossing listening.
    Critic Reviews:
    "Muller's reading is superb." (

"[Stephen Crane] knows nothing of war, yet he is drenched in blood. Most beginners who deal with this subject spatter themselves with ink." (Ambrose Bierce, author and Civil War veteran)

    Very well Narrated ..
Would you listen to The Red Badge of Courage again? Why?
I would listen to this book again, because of the Narrator Frank Muller made you feel like you was watching a movie in your ears.. Outstanding performance by the Narrator.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I like the main character in the Book, the young Henry Fleming because of what he had to go through as the story continued.
What does Frank Muller bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Frank Muller Narrating brings the art of entertainment to your ears. almost make you feel like you was watching a movie.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    The whole story was great.
    A Classic
It is so sad that Stephen Crane died at such a young age and in such an ignominious way. What a waste of such a great talent. I am grateful he left us The Red Badge of Courage and a few other things before his life was over.
Crane's style is quite unlike any other author I have ever read. His characters were always referred to by a description rather than by name, although Crane did give many of them names. The protagonist, Henry Fleming, was consistently referred to throughout the book as "the Youth." In addition to Crane's inspired prose, his characterizations are great. The metamorphosis that Henry (the Youth) goes through is very well done. Crane's description of battles of war are amazing, especially when one learns that Crane had never been involved in a war.
Well done, Stephen. Wish you had stuck around to give us more great literature.
There is a seemingly never-ending line-up of narrators of this book. None will be better than Frank Muller. Make it easy on yourself, and choose Frank. He is amazing!!

Title: The Last of the Mohicans
    Author: James Fenimore Cooper
    Narrator: Larry McKeever
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 20 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-07-99
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 326 votes
    Genres: Classics, American Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
The Last of the Mohicans has all the elements of a classic frontier adventure: massacres and raids, innocent settlers, hardened soldiers, renegade Indians, and a doomed love affair. It is a memorable portrait of fierce individualism and moral courage. But what draws readers and listeners again and again to this panoramic novel is its deep insight into the symbols of American consciousness.
The French and Indian War adventures of Hawk-eye, a reclusive white woodsman, and his Indian friend Chingachgook have contributed much to the frontier mythos. The story of two men who are at odds with their own people, but reluctantly agree to guide two sisters through hostile Indian country, has found an enduring place in the literary and cultural history of America.
James Fenimore Cooper is widely acknowledged as the pre-eminent American writer of his time. The Last of the Mohicans is one of his most popular and critically acclaimed works. Larry McKeever's animated and skillful narration intensifies the novel's romance and drama and brings its tragic characters fully to life.
    Critic Reviews:
"Want to relish your early American history, to thrill again at the suspense of forest dangers, to wonder whether Hawkeye will ever quite forsake the trail for a tender passage of love and domesticity? Then this book is for you." (
    Chicago Sunday Tribune)

    Poor sound
Great book, but this is an old recording & has background hiss. Pick the $ 1.99 recording instead. Narrated by Larry Rudnicka (sp?)
    Not quite what I expected
This read a lot fresher than I expected from a book which is now almost 200 years old (although, note that the narrator reads the footnotes without any warning--at first, I thought Cooper must have been post-modern!). The most surprising and intringuing aspect was its temporal scope: the events of all 400 pages (14 hours) occur within just a few days. This means the pace of the story-telling is relaxed, even when the action is not, affording loads of detail and creating very effective suspense (reminiscent of Hemingway's _For Whom the Bell Tolls_). For the most part, this immersion keeps the reader fully interested, but sometimes it becomes tedious, e.g., the Homeric burial rites at the end. The most memorable scenes are those relating the shocking horrors perpetrated by American Natives, dubious tellings which obviously should now be taken with several grains of salt.
    Outstanding tale and rendition
This was my first Cooper novel. He spins a wonderful adventure tale which greatly caught me by surprise. The rendition by the narrator is done excellently, as well.
Passion of the French and Indian War
An engaging immersion in the French and Indian War, among the savagery of the Indians, caught between the powers of France and England. The story of the Mohican and the Delaware tribes, decimated by more than a century of contact with whites. Interesting characterization of Hawkeye and of his Indian brothers. Even the Huron villain is understandable. Better than any of the movie versions of the story, even though somewhat dated in style. Excellent narration.
    Obviously a classic, but...
Really struggled to get into this book. Seemed long winded and hard to follow at times. Didn't get invested in the characters which is never good.

    Excellent listen
I was little more than 12 years old when the Berlin Wall fell and the statue of Lenin was pulled from its base in Moscow. In the classroom, I remember our teacher telling us, "Pay attention, ladies and gentlemen, you are watching history." Being little more than 12, it took another ten years for me to fully understand how true that statement was, and to fully appreciate the import of the images on the television screen.
This story, written during what could be considered the height of the Cold War, breathes fresh life into old paranoias. Few novels have had such an impact on my day to day thinking while I was listening to them; this one has me mentally tallying the foodstuffs and emergency supplies in my house and wondering how I would survive should the unthinkable happen.
I have listened to a lot of post-apocalyptic fiction since joining Audible five years ago, and have read a lot more. Will Patton's narration hits the high and low points perfectly, improving what is already a great story. I am so glad I saw and purchased 'Alas, Babylon'; it's going to be a repeat listen for sure.
    Amazingly contemporary
This great work of science fiction was written in a different time and world situation, but it feels as fresh as if it was just created. So much of what happens after the nuclear disaster in the book is just what probably would happen now. I have enjoyed every word. Will Patton is the perfect narrator.
    Excellent audiobook
It's difficult to believe this book was first published in 1959. The storyline is extremely well thought out, the characters are well defined and very believable.
The book is full of historically accurate facts that take the reader back to the days of what an earlier generation knew as "Mutually Assured Destruction." This audiobook is well worth the investment of your time and money.
    Excellent 5-star listen
I read this story when it was first released and have replaced my copy several times. It has maintained it's relevancy over the years well. With Will Patton reading, it comes alive.

    Heed the advice
How could the performance have been better?
I didn't understand what the other reviewers were talking about when I listened to the available sample for this reading, so I purchased it... but a few pages in, it struck home that the book is read with a complete lack of attention to the actual content of the text.
There's plenty of inflection-- but it's the same inflection, over and over, regardless of punctuation; it turns Herman Melville's long, full, beautiful sentences into endless abrupt, normal-length sentences that are unrelated to each other. The narrator's reading makes it nearly impossible to synthesize what is actually being said. For that reason, this audiobook is absolutely not for someone "reading" the book for the first time.
    Boring!!!! OMG!
    Any additional comments?
I don't typically write reviews. I don't find myself to be very eloquent, however, I must comment on the narration of this audiobook. The reader, to put it in modern terms...sucks! He is very boring and mispronounces a lot of words, especially naval terms. The reader sounds like a human computer. He puts emphasis on the wrong syllables and pauses in the wrong places. I think Siri could have read the book much better! I could not listen to him for more than a couple of hours, so I cannot comment on whether the story is actually any good or not. I am going to download this book from a different reader like Frank Muller in hopes that it will be a more enjoyable listen.
    Worst narrator
What would have made Moby Dick better?
I don't think the narrator understood what he was reading. It was awful.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Mr dick
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I don't think the narrator understood what he was reading. It was awful.
    Awful version. . .
What would have made Moby Dick better?
Moby Dick is a classic - indisputable - this audio version is awful though. Its painful to listen too, the voice actor sounds like he went to Shatner's School of voice acting. The audio pulled me out of the story every time I tried to listen to it.
    Any additional comments?
Do not get this audio version, try another one.
    Yes, bad narration
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Ha! Well, I'd tighten up the writing some, maybe add a boy wizard... That captain is really a downer.
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator has a lovely resonant voice, but he seems to be coming upon the words for the first time as he reads them. He mispronounces some fairly common words as if he doesn't quite know where the story is going from one phrase to the next.
