    Title: A Good American
    Author: Alex George
    Narrator: Gibson Frazier
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 27 mins

    Release date: 03-05-12
    Publisher: Penguin Audio

    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
An uplifting novel about the families we create and the places we call home.
It is 1904. When Frederick and Jette must flee her disapproving mother, where better to go than America, the land of the new? Originally set to board a boat to New York, at the last minute, they take one destined for New Orleans instead ("What's the difference? They're both new.") and later find themselves, more by chance than by design, in the small town of Beatrice, Missouri. Not speaking a word of English, they embark on their new life together.
Beatrice is populated with unforgettable characters: a jazz trumpeter from the Big Easy who cooks a mean gumbo, a teenage boy trapped in the body of a giant, a pretty schoolteacher who helps the young men in town learn about a lot more than just music, a minister who believes he has witnessed the Second Coming of Christ, and a malevolent, bicycle-riding dwarf.
A Good American is narrated by Frederick and Jette's grandson, James, who, in telling his ancestors' story, comes to realize he doesn't know his own story at all. From bare-knuckle prizefighting and Prohibition to sweet barbershop harmonies, the Kennedy assassination, and beyond, James's family is caught up in the sweep of history. Each new generation discovers afresh what it means to be an American. And, in the process, Frederick and Jette's progeny sometimes discover more about themselves than they had bargained for.
Poignant, funny, and heartbreaking, A Good American is a novel about being an outsider - in your country, in your hometown, and sometimes even in your own family. It is a universal story about our search for home.

    Stay with it....
Initally, it was a challenge to stay interested in this family saga, but it grew on me as the story found its rhythm. The characters are both charming, maddening and eccentric, and the narrative has both high and low points, some gentle humor and moments of sadness. Stay with it, there is a lovely story here. ( and a revelation near the end that I did NOT expect. ).
    I liked the idea but...
Would you consider the audio edition of A Good American to be better than the print version?
    Probably
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The most interesting aspect was the immigration; the insurmountable hurdles these folks had to go through yet did so with all their hearts and souls. They appreciated America more than their offspring ever could.
What does Gibson Frazier bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He's a good narrator and made the accents believable giving it the authenticity of immigration.
If you could take any character from A Good American out to dinner, who would it be and why?
I would like to take the original immigrants, Frederick and Jette, to dinner. It would be an amazing experience to discuss the strength it took to board a ship going to a new country with no prospects for employment, housing or medical... And Jette was nearly full term in a pregnancy that led to all the events of the book. Terrifying what immigrants went through back then.
    Any additional comments?
I enjoyed the early part of the book but less so with each subsequent generation.
    Deeeeelightful!
Alex George artfully crafts a delightful story of generations of an immigrant family, richly colored with well drawn characters and events. Through triumph and tragedy, the story weaves itself into American fabric.

    Publisher's Summary:
Prior to the Civil War, the fastest mail between the West Coast and the East took almost thirty days by stagecoach along a southern route through Texas. Some Californians feared their state would not remain in the Union, separated so far from the free states. Then businessman William Russell invested in a way to deliver mail between San Francisco and the farthest western railroad, in Saint Joseph, Missouri - across two thousand miles of mountains, deserts, and plains - guaranteed in ten days or less. Russell hired eighty of the best and bravest riders, bought four hundred of the fastest and hardiest horses, and built relay stations along a central route - through modern-day Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada, to California. Informed by his intimate knowledge of horses and Western geography, Ralph Moody's exciting account of the eighteen critical months that the Pony Express operated between April 1860 and October 1861 pays tribute to the true grit and determination of the riders and horses of the Pony Express.

    history come to life
excellent story that is clearly a written record of the stories moody heard from childhood
    History well-written and interesting
I read the entire "Little Britches" series to my 10-year-old twin sons and we loved the writing and the stories of Ralph Moody. This book did not disappoint either. The book starts with a brief history of why there was a need for the Pony Express and what it took to get it up and running.
The majority of the book outlines the riders, routes and challenges of the first pony express ride. The East-bound and West-bound mail started at the same time but which mail route will make it to the end of the line first? Each rider had an allotted time to make the ride. Some riders made it well ahead of their time. Others faced coyotes, snow storms or Native Americans and used up their allotted time plus some.
The end of the book highlights a few of the most notable pony express riders and even tells the story of those who gave their life to get the mail through.
A great listen time and time again.

    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited

    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
The master of historical fiction presents the iconic story of King Alfred and the making of a nation.
As the ninth century wanes, England appears about to be plunged into chaos once more. For the Viking-raised but Saxon-born warrior, Uhtred, whose life seems to shadow the making of England, this presents him with difficult choices.King Alfred is dying and his passing threatens the island of Britain to renewed warfare. Alfred wants his son, Edward, to succeed him but there are other Saxon claimants to the throne as well as ambitious pagan Vikings to the north.
Uhtreds loyalty and his vows were to Alfred, not to his son, and despite his long years of service to Alfred, he is still not committed to the Saxon cause. His own desire is to reclaim his long lost lands and castle to the north. But the challenge to him, as the kings warrior, is that he knows that he will either be the means of making Alfreds dream of a united and Christian England come to pass or be responsible for condemning it to oblivion.
This novel is a dramatic story of the power of tribal commitment and the terrible difficulties of divided loyalties. This is the making of England magnificently brought to life by the master of historical fiction.

If only it wasn't for the narration..
Bernard Cornwell's "Saxon Stories" series if fantastic. I love it.
I found this audiobook version of Death of Kings however to be extremely irritating. The reason for this was not for the actual voicing of the narrattion itself, but rather the creative licence the narrator took with character and place names. Bebbanburg became "Bamburgh", Lundane became "London". We all know that these are the modern names for these locations, but the narrators job is to read what the author has put on the page, not to add his own interpretation of what he thinks will suit the story. I especially found myself cringing every time the Perring said the name "Yoo-tred" (Uhtred).
Had it not been for this minor issue I would have awarded Death of Kings with the usual Bernard Cornwell 5 star review, and if you can get past the narration issues the book is as entertaining as always.
    Better than expected
Other reviews were mentioning the lifeless acting of the reader, but I didn't feel it like that. I didn't listen to the other books, though; this is the first one in the series.
But the missing historical notes are heartbreaking.
Another great addition to the series...
I first heard of this series when the BBC show came to Netflix. . the books are amazing and I look forward to the next..
    Shame on you Harper Audio
As usual, the story was amazing. But the series began with a 10/10 narrator and Harper audio decided to swap him out for a 2/10 narrator who took liberties in not only pronunciation but in changing names of people and places completely. To say the listeners were confused is an understatement. Apparently the next in the series is a third narrator. Let's hope he does a better job...
Great story wish they never changed the reader.
Stephen Perring should stick to children's books. He didn't give any emotion to the story like Jonathan Keebler does.Half of the names were pronounced differently . ... And it's Bebbanburg dammit...

    Publisher's Summary:
Velva Jean Hart, the fiercely independent heroine of Jennifer Niven's spectacular debut novel, Velva Jean Learns to Drive, returns in a captivating adventure that literally sends her soaring. Bristling at the limitations faced by a woman in rural Appalachia and fueled by the memory of her late Mama telling her to "live out there," Velva Jean hits the road to pursue her dream of singing at the Grand Ole Opry. But after a string of auditions, she begins to lose hope - until her brother pays her a surprise visit and treats Velva Jean to a flying lesson that ignites a brand-new dream: to become a female pilot. Funny, poignant, and utterly unforgettable, Velva Jean Learns to Fly will have fans cheering all over again.
    Critic Reviews:
"Besides creating a gutsy heroine, who, despite the repressive times, never becomes bitter, Niven's writing shines overall. Cheers to Niven, Velva Jean." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
    Why change the reader?
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I liked the way Jenna Lemia read the first book in the series, and I felt like I was now a part of Velva Jean's family, rooting for her so much that I wanted to hear her next adventure, but this the new reader (Emily Durante) was so different, I was very disappointed. I felt as if my baby was switched at the hospital. The book is so well written, but the new reader obviously hadn't read the first book and didn't know the story line, so her interpretation was flat. Bummer.Regarding the story, I loved it, but I felt at one point, there was a forced event - when Gossy ended up on the same plane Velva Jean was piloting into history. The story didn't need it and I didn't buy it for a second that Gossy would put up with the military and vice versa. Also, the way it ended makes me feel that there's so many loose ends, there's gotta be another book soon.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Velva Jean Learns to Fly?
I love the way Jennifer Niven weaves a tale. I also like the way she's paints the landscape of discrimination, prejudice and how women were (are) treated. Good for Velva Jean!
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Emily Durante?
    Jenna Lamia.
VJ Drives Better Than She Flies
VJ Learns to Drive was one of my favorites, the performance 5 stars. VJ Learns to Fly was barely bearable. Had I not been on bed rest I wouldn't have gotten through it. I did enjoy learning about the WASP's roll in WWII. Everything in the story was just too contrived. The narrator was horrible. I would have given her a zero if I could have. She is particularly bad in the first 1/4 of the book. She gets tolerable in the last 1/3. I really got tired of VJ going through the same old list of friends, experiences and lessons every time she faced a problem. The character just wasn't believable through this narrator or the story. VJ's life's dream goes from singing at the grand ole opry to flying bombers for the air force? Too big a leap. Even the "rise above it syndrome" doesn't explain this turn around in her to the point she is willing to die to fly.

    Title: The Volcano Lover
    Subtitle: A Romance
    Author: Susan Sontag
    Narrator: Jennifer Van Dyck
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 16 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-02-11
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 35 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
The Volcano Lover follows the fortunes of a British ambassador, the ravishing woman he marries, and the young British admiral with whom she falls in love.
Set in 18th-century Naples and based on the lives of Sir William Hamilton, his celebrated wife Emma, and Lord Nelson, the novel is peopled with many of the great figures of the day. This unconventional, best-selling historical romance from the National Book Award-winning author of In America touches on themes of sex and revolution, the fate of nature, art and the collector's obsessions, and, above all, love.
    Critic Reviews:
"A panoramic, passionately feminist examination of the changing shape of Western civilisation since the Age of Enlightenment. Sontag's book is a sweeping, exquisitely detailed picture of Europe in the final decades of the eighteenth century." (Chicago Sun-Times)
"The Volcano Lover is a great novel. It repeatedly scales heights of complex thought, passion and expression that few American writers ever approach, while reimagining a majestic love story in dazzling style." (The Philadelphia Inquirer)
"Hardly digressions, Sontag's many aesthetic speculations wonderfully enhance the plot. A fine novel of ideas, this is sure to please venturesome readers of historical romance as well." (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
Enthralling. Impossible to remove my headphones.
What did you love best about The Volcano Lover?
Sontag gripped me. What do I love? History. Edgy. Thoughtful. Surprises. Romance. This delivered all beyond my expectations. I am still tingling and feel a sense of abandonment one feels when a great "read" ends.
What did you like best about this story?
Naples. Evocative descriptions. Art. Furious and spot-on conclusion that is literally the best conclusion of any novel ever - bar none - even my great beloveds of the Brontes, Wilkie Collins, Tolstoy, James. This is a great great read.
Which character as performed by Jennifer Van Dyck was your favorite?
Van Dyck is obliged to capture a variety of narrators: male and female, living and dead, and she nails them all. Her voice is like burnt caramel. I felt like Sontag was there, and I spoke to her. Van Dyck has her round tones and deep power.
She needs some work on Italian names, but I gave her 5 stars because I am still a true fan and would acquire any audiobook by her.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The ending was like a punch in the chest and I love it completely.
    Any additional comments?
I had the audiobook of Sontag's other novel, In America, and it was a love hate. The audio book was great, but the writing pissed me off for the first third. Afterwards, she redeemed herself and I was content. I had moderate expectations of this novel, and, from the beginning was flabbergasted. I never wanted to do anything other than listen. It is a great great work. This production is so worthy of a remarkable piece of writing.
The quips and aphorisms are the best part
This very literary historical romance novel, set for the most part in 18th-century Italy, is beautifully presented by the Audible narrator. With a strong plot and fascinating setting, the novel certainly held my interest.

Fine work from a quintessentially American writer. (Kirkus)
    Members Reviews:
I do love this author's work!
I quite liked this! I had to relisten to big chunks of the story multiple times as there were details easily missed. I'll listen to it over again as I do with all Doig... There is so much to absorb!
    Loved it.
If you could sum up Prairie Nocturne in three words, what would they be?
I love everything Ivan Doig writes. His writing is unique and poetic. Love his characters. Love his stories.
I did not want the story to end!
Would you listen to Prairie Nocturne again? Why?
I would listen to it again because the characters and their relationships are complex and the world they live in is so beautifully described.
Which character as performed by Scott Sowers was your favorite?
    Susan, of course.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I wanted it to last a long time.
    Not to my liking!
I have enjoyed Doig's books in the past. Dancing at the Rascal Fair was just wonderful. This one, not so wonderful. None of the characters were likeable or interesting enough to hold my imagination. The story moves along as slow as molasses. Life is too short to waste on a book you don't care about. I am quitting after listening for 6 hours.

    J S Gets 5 Stars for Creativity
J S has written a very creative account that plops the reader down into Cape Town So. Africa - of all places - in the middle of a maritime series! It is a very fun ride!!
    Starts slow, then GO!
Stockton puts together an exciting romp in this story. Although the beginning gets bogged down in historical details (although interesting, not compelling enough to NOT use the sleep timer at night on the Audible App.) Then, suddenly, Nicholas Renzy becomes center stage pursuing the rumor of a secret military action by the French. Unbeknownst to him, Kidd is working the same angle from the naval side. It ends up with them meeting in the jungle of South Africa with an all-or-nothing gambit to secure the colony for the British.
Slightly more of a slow-burner but still excellent
This episode retains many of the traits that we have come to expect from Julian Stockwin,. It is thoroughly researched without being overbearing, beautifully described and characterised superbly by Christian Rodska. The usual rich cast of characters are once again blended seamlessly against a background of real historical events.
Kydd's adventures this time see him more on land this time and the battle descriptions are excellent showing that the author is more than just a naval buff! Seeing Kydd and particularly the mercurial Renzi immersed into the birth of empire adds to the atmosphere.
This one didn't grip me all the way through like most of the others have but builds to an excellent conclusion that makes it yet another book well worth listening to in this series.

    Publisher's Summary:
In To Try Men's Souls, Newt Gingrich and William R. Forstchen cast a new light on the year 1776 and the man who would become the father of our nation, George Washington.
Valley Forge picks up the narrative a year after Washingtons triumphant surprise attack on Trenton, and much has changed since then. Its the winter of 1777, and Washingtons battered, demoralized army retreats from Philadelphia. Arriving at Valley Forge, they discover that their repeated requests for a stockpile of food, winter clothing, and building tools have been ignored by Congress.
With no other options available, the men settle down for a season of agony. For weeks, the dwindling army lives under tents in the bitter cold. Food runs out. The men are on the point of collapse, while in Philadelphia the British, joined by Allen van Dorn, the Loyalist brother of the dead patriot, Jonathan van Dorn, live in luxury.
In spite of the suffering and deceit, Washington endures all, joined at last by a volunteer from Germany, Baron von Steuben. Von Steuben begins the hard task of recasting the army as a professional fighting force capable of facing the British head-on - something it has never accomplished before - and in the process he will change the course of history.
Valley Forge is a tour-de-force about endurance, survival, transformation, and rebirth. Washington and his Continental Army, against all odds, will be forged into a fighting force that will win a revolution.
    Members Reviews:
    Outstanding book overall.
Great writing, excellent story telling, excellent narration (with the exception of Martha Washington) her reading is bland, it of sync, it just does not seem to fit, almost monotone. She sounds like she's "reading it".
Thankfully, there isn't much of that.
I really enjoyed all the of these in the series.
    The Forging of America
Gingrich and Forstchen have produced a magnificent account of the winter of 1777-1778 at Valley Forge. It is not only the story of 12,000 men who entered Valley Forge demoralized, untrained, unsupplied but under the leadership of Washington and the shear force of will and skill of Generals Wayne, Lafaayette and Von Steuben that they marched out of Valley Forge aa a true army finally equipped with enough training, supplies and pride to take on the British.
Although generally familiar with the Valley Forge story, I was left with a sense of pride, awe and inspiration of what Washington and his men were able to accomplish. Gingrich and Forstchen have a way of making you feel like you are actually there - feeling the cold, snow and hunger. You can imagine the suffering even the healthy men endured let alone those who were injured or stricken with diseases.
Besides Washington, the other key characters are Lafayette, Baron Von Steuben and a ficitonal character Allen Van Dorn. Washington provided the leadership, Lafayette the heart and Von Steuben the knowledge for colonists to march out of Valley Forge as real army with a real chance to stand toe to toe with the British for the first time.
