    Publisher's Summary:
The place is Albany, New York. The year is 1936. Six-year-old Jean-Luc LaPointe, his little sister, and their spirited but vulnerable young mother have been abandoned, again, by his father, a charmer and a con artist. With no money and no family willing to take them in, the LaPointes manage to create a fragile nest at 238 North Pearl Street. For the next eight years, through the Great Depression and Second World War, they live in the heart of the Irish slum, with its ward heelers, unemployment, and grinding poverty. As Jean-Luc discovers, it's a neighborhood of "crazyladies": Miss Cox, the feared and ridiculed teacher who ignites his imagination; Mrs. Kane, who runs a beauty parlor/fortune-telling salon in the back of her husband's grocery store; Mrs. Meehan, the desperate, harried matriarch of a thuggish family across the street; lonely Mrs. McGivney, who spends every day tending to her catatonic husband, a veteran of the Great War; and Jean-Luc's own unconventional, vivacious mother.
Jean-Luc is a voracious reader who never stops dreaming of a way out of the slum. He gradually takes on responsibility for the family's survival with a mix of bravery and resentment while his mom turns from spells of illness and depression to eager planning for the day when "our ship will come in." It's a heartfelt and unforgettable look back at one child's life in the 1930s and '40s, a story that will be remembered long after it ends.

    A walk down memory lane
I have never read anything else by this author so I was skeptical about this book but it was delightful. It is rich in "signs of the time" and the reality of a child's imagination that is trying to cope with pressures and guilt, most of it self-imposed out of a sense of responsibility. Trevanian has captured the essence of growing up in poverty in a small city. I found so many things that related to my own childhood that at times I could still feel the burden and I think the only escape was to develop a rich imagination. I hated the story to end. A lot of books written about this time frame are written from a rural setting and we see how hard it is to run the farm or make a living from the land - this gives an urban view from the eyes of an intelligent ambitious young boy.
    Enjoyable coming of age story
I have not read any of Trevanian's other novels. Apparently, this one is not his usual stuff. Despite the disclaimer, it seems quite autobiographical. Luke's mother is abandoned by her husband, shortly after they are married. He returns once to father Luke's sister, and then sends a note to have them meet him in Albany. They arrive at Pearl Street, (an Irish Catholic slum) and he has disappeared again. The story details the lives on Pearl Street, during the depression and through WWII. Luke manages to care for his mother and sister, despite crushing poverty, in part by making up story games and living in his head. His descriptions of the "characters" who also live on Pearl Street are well done and for the most part, gentle and insightful.
At times, the story got a bit long winded, but I kept going back to catch the parts I missed.

    Publisher's Summary:
Howard Carter has just made one of the great discoveries of all time, the unveiling of Tutankhamun's tomb. At the same time, Egyptologist Ralph Trilipush finds himself in a slightly less spectacular position. He has staked everything on a scrap of hieroglyphic pornography. Halfway around the world, an Australian detective sets off on a globetrotting quest to find a murderer. Or two. Or three. These events, seemingly unrelated, are about to collide in a spectacular yet utterly unpredictable fashion.

    Members Reviews:
I gave it another chance and WOW.
I gave up the first time, but having spent the money on this book, I tried again. I think I wasn't paying attention the first time and the australian detective's voice was grating. But once it clicked in my mind what was happening, I couldn't stop listening. I have also bought the book in print and pick it up to read "the good parts" . Stick with it and you won't be dissappointed. This would be a great movie! The final scenes would be riveting. Even knowing how it ends, I am now re-reading/listening to it. Simon Prebble is brilliant in portraying the mental state of the egyptologist. Stick with it.
    An intricately carved plot
If you're looking for a cozy Egyptian mystery a la Elizabeth Peters, this is NOT the book for you. If, on the other hand, you're looking for a meticulously structured novel that begins with a mystery but peels away, layer by layer, to expose outrageous egos, debauched jazz-age society, delusions of grandeur and, yes, crime, then check this out. Phillips does an outstanding job of not just telling a story, but creating a world with minute detail and manifold connections. Note that there's a cast of readers, not just one, which can take some getting used to. And as other reviewers have pointed out, some patience and tolerance for seaminess is required. Recommended for those who enjoyed "Devil in the White City," which to me at least hits many of the same chords.
    Gee, I kinda liked it...
The other reviewers evidently had expectation far wide of what this book is about. It's neither a tradional mystery in the vein of Amelia Peabody, nor is it an attempt to educate the reader about ancient Egypt. It's an unconventional mystery, creatively told, amusingly narrated, and entertaining. I enjoyed the author's near-vicious depiction of early 20th-Century British classism and the pretensions of the main character (and the pretensions turn out to be as much pretending to himself as pretentious). None of the characters is very likeable, but they are interesting, and in the end I felt sympathy for them all. (Well, several of them, anyway.)
    pretty good
I like this one. Looking at the other reviews it seems its not for people who dont want to fully listen and need lots of action. But it was very enjoyable for me.
Charming and fun, read to perfection...
I enjoyed this book as much as any lately. It was a little bit lightweight in the mystery and historical fiction genre, but researched and presented with affectionate enthusiasm, much like the Dan Brown amusement parks of "Angels and Demon" and "DaVinci Code".

    Publisher's Summary:
In pioneer Nebraska, a woman leads where no man will go.
Soon to be a major motion picture directed by Tommy Lee Jones, The Homesman is a devastating story of early pioneers in 1850s American West. It celebrates the ones we hear nothing of: the brave women whose hearts and minds were broken by a life of bitter hardship. A "homesman" must be found to escort a handful of them back East to a sanitarium. When none of the countys men steps up, the job falls to Mary Bee Cuddy - ex-teacher, spinster, indomitable and resourceful. Brave as she is, Mary Bee knows she cannot succeed alone. The only companion she can find is the low-life claim jumper George Briggs. Thus begins a trek east, against the tide of colonization, against hardship, Indian attacks, ice storms, and loneliness - a timeless classic told in a series of tough, fast-paced adventures.
In an unprecedented sweep, Glendon Swarthouts novel won both the Western Writers of Americas Spur Award and the Western Heritage Wrangler Award. A new afterword by the authors son Miles Swarthout tells of his parents Glendon and Kathryns discovery of and research into the lives of the oft-forgotten frontier women who make The Homesman as moving and believable as it is unforgettable.

Great story but the end was a huge diappointment
I cant believe with all that great writing it ended with a whimper. Really left me borderline angry that I got involved in reading it. It's like have a rich dessert that you are willing to risk the calories on because it's such a work of art and all the layers bring bursts of flavor. Then suddenly you bite into something that nearly breaks a tooth. Then the rest of the dessert just melts into mush while you're still trying to figure out what happened.
Great until 3/4 of the way in..then it fell apart
What a great story with super characters. The story was moving along nicely, then the author totally changed the entire story line. Confused and disappointed.
Could've Been Great, Ended Up Barely Good
I had been looking forward to listening to this story about four pioneer women who lost their minds out west after enduring horrifying hardships. I totally "bought into" the story, loved it, felt for the women and the men who loved them and had to send them back east, back home to heal. Mary Bee, a strong homesteader, who offers to take the mad women back east when the husband who drew lots refuses to go, is ahead of her time, knows how to shoot and defend herself, cares for her livestock, and is independent and unafraid. A woman of strong character, who loves the women she is transporting, respects them, and cares for them with dignity, and is traveling along with a man whom she has hired to help her . . . a man who is self-serving, a claim jumper, who failed to complete his service to his country, but who perhaps deep down has a shred of decency . . . all I can say is that it's a dirty rotten shame that the author decided to go off on a wild goose chase and take the story out "in the weeds" and rob the book of GREATNESS. It left me disgusted, not fulfilled. This one did not meet my criteria of providing an ending worth waiting for . . . it was a dud.
    hugely disappointing
This begins as an interesting inversion of the western formula, with a strong spinster rancher carting four madwomen home to the east.

    Publisher's Summary:
Perfect for fans of Philippa Gregory and Alison Weir, The Virgin's Daughter is the first book in a captivating new saga about the next generation of Tudor royals, which poses the thrilling question: What if Elizabeth I, the celebrated Virgin Queen, gave birth to a legitimate heir?
Since the death of her brother, William, Elizabeth I has ruled England. She's made the necessary alliances, married Philip of Spain, and produced a successor: her only daughter, Anne Isabella, Princess of Wales. Elizabeth knows that her beloved Anabel will be a political pawn across Europe unless she can convince Philip to grant her a divorce, freeing him to remarry and give Spain its own heir. But the enemies of England have even greater plans for the princess, a plot that will put Anabel's very life and the security of the nation in peril.
Only those closest to Elizabeth - her longtime confidante, Minuette; her advisor and friend, Dominic; and the couple's grown children - can be trusted to carry forth a most delicate and dangerous mission. Yet all of the queen's maneuverings may ultimately prove her undoing.

Intriguing premise, good story, great storytelling
    Any additional comments?
What if Elizabeth I had produced an heir? How would the course of history have changed? In this compelling glimpse into Elizabeth's life and those of the people closest to her, we are treated to a well-crafted fictionalized version of history that is liberally peppered by actual facts. Both real and imagined historical characters are brought to life by really good narration/storytelling. The reader has a very pleasing voice and creates clear personalities for each of the players in a high-stakes royal game of intrigue and politics. I found myself lost in this thoroughly enjoyable tale--which is, of course, what good storytelling should do. Looking forward to hearing the rest of this series.
    Nice continuation!
    !!!SPOILERS!!!
This was a very nice continuation of the Boleyn books. I was hoping for a more devastating secret from Nicola. The fact that he was screwing Julian's first love was a let down, of sorts. I was expecting something to the effect of Julian was Felix's real father. I DO like the fact that Mary Stuart is in play again. I can only imagine how upset Queen Elizabeth will be when the details of the plot come to light. Here's hoping for another book!!
    FUN FUN FUN!
Would you listen to The Virgin's Daughter again? Why?
Yes, I really enjoyed the book and recommended it to my sister who has read the Boleyn series after me. We really enjoy the Laura Andersen's writing.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Virgin's Daughter?
I don't want to give anything away but things get heated between two of the main characters and it left me laughing at the scandal.
Did Rosalind Ashford do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
She did do a great job giving the characters appropriate accents which helped differentiate between them but I preferred the narrator from Laura's last series.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Oh I would hope it was a television series I would have fun with that. I have no clue what the tag line would be.... I would need to think about it.
    Worth it in the end
The story starts really slow but in the end it's worth it.

    Wait for unabridged or read
I really looked forward to this novel because of its setting and reputation, but did not enjoy it. As a previous reviewer suggested, the backgound of the Irish freedom struggle, Gallipoli, and some discussion of the imperialist rationale for WW1 are fascinating and well-woven into the narrative, but as a whole this "listen" failed me - I suspect it's mostly due to the often abrupt abridgements.
The "action" scenes are probably very well-written, but I have little appreciation for those.
    Redemption
This was a gut wrenching book (especially if you have an Irish background). A book that leaves you wanting more. I wish that this had been an unabriged book.
    Warning: it is abridged.
What would have made Redemption better?
I didn't realize it was abridged. I stopped listening shortly after starting. Too much missing.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
    Make it unabridged.
    Charlie Brown's teacher
This book is set around the Irish-English conflict, which is over religion, I think? The plot and characters are unfamiliar and I guess I should listen to the prequel, Trinity, which receives rave reviews. This one is a slow read, and since it's really a listen, there is not much motivation to go past an hour or so; cut one's losses and go on to something that's interesting. The story is unfamiliar and without some background in Irish politics, it's not worth going over, so I quit--did not finish. The book began to sound like Charlie Brown's teacher...wah-wah, wah-wah, ;wah-wah! Didn't even get to know the characters enough to want to skip to the end and see how it came out. After three tries to read/listen, I gave up and went on to other things, like washing the dishes.

Title: The Ballad of Tom Dooley

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 23 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-30-11
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 57 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
The Kingston Trios folk song Tom Dooley tells the story of the murder of Laura Foster, a simple country girl involved with returning Confederate soldier Tom Dula. But Tom was also engaged in a passionate affair with his childhood sweetheart, the beautiful - and married - Ann Melton. One May morning in 1866, Laura Foster stole her fathers horse and left home, telling a neighbor that she was eloping to Tennessee. Three months later, her body was found in a shallow grave only a few hundred yards from where she was last seen. The sensational elements in the case attracted national attention: a man and his married lover accused of murdering the other woman; the former governor of North Carolina, spearheading the defense; and a noble gesture from the condemned man on the eve of his execution, saving the woman he really loved.
With the help of Wilkes County historians and researchers, author Sharyn McCrumb visited the actual sites, studied the legal evidence, and concluded that the traditional story did not make sense. Consulting the maps, the trial transcripts, and the census records, she uncovered a missing piece of the story that will shock those who think they already know what happened.
What seemed at first to be a sordid tale of adultery and betrayal has been transformed by new discoveries into an Appalachian Wuthering Heights. The fictional retelling of the historical account became an astonishing revelation of the real motives and the real culprit in the murder of Laura Foster.
    Members Reviews:
    Disappointing
I had my hopes up, hearing that McCrumb is a great southern writer. Not so much with this attempt. Badly edited, there are entire passages that are identical; so much so that at one point I thought I'd inadvertently skipped backwards. The story, large in scope, with complex characters, here is narrowed down to a single sociopathic viewpoint. The attempt to provide counterpoint with Zeb Vance's voice is not enough. Everyone in this book comes off petty, mean, hateful, and at the end, it just leaves a bad taste in the mouth. The final insult is the reader. She reads the book, but she does not act it. The anti-heroine, Pauline Foster is read in a soft, light sing-song. The inner rage and resentment that fuel her world view and her actions are nowhere to be found. She could only manage one Southern accent, so that when she had to be, say, the rich planter or the doctor, she was reduced to a northern accent to make them sound cultured and intelligent. A Southern book deserves more complexity than that. I might try this book again on the page as the reader just butchered it, but I don't hope for much.
    I expected much more
Sharon McCrumb is so talented, and I was hoping for some insight into the ballad, but this gave me no more than the song, really. I don't understand the reason for the two narrators. I was originally intrigued by Pauline, but she quickly dissolved into a one dimensional villain. Zebulon Vance provided history of the 1860's, but didn't provide any information or insight. I don't know what his purpose in the story was supposed to be.
We all know that the South lost the Civil War, that rural life is hard in the 19th Century, and that Tom Dooley dies, I wanted a better back story than this.
Excellent ballad, interesting, captivating, albeit slightly depressing
I really enjoyed both of the narrators acting.

    Wonderful
This is the author's debut novel? This is a very well written and thought provoking inspirational piece. Very impressive. It is food for the heart and the soul. Of course, the narration by Barbara Caruso absolutely makes this a must-read novel. Her narration is a large part of why this novel is so much better for me as an audiobook, than it would have been on paper. Kudos, to author and narrator for a wonderful read. I can't wait for your next novel.
    AWSOME!!
I FOUND THIS BOOK SO HEART WARMING AND TENDER. A ROMANCE WITHOUT ALL THE CRUDE DISCRIPTIONS OF SEX, THAT SO MANY AUTHORS FEEL THEY HAVE TO WRITE IN THEIR STORY IN ORDER TO SELL. THIS STORY TAKES YOU TO A DIFFERENT TIME AND PLACE. I HATED TO SEE IT END. IF YOUR LOOKING FOR A CLEAN WHOLESOME CHRISTIAN LOVE STORY, THIS IS IT. I WANT TO READ ALL OF KIM VOGEL SAWYER'S BOOKS IF THIS IS THE WONDERFUL RESULT TO EXPECT.
    Waiting for Summer's Return
I can recommend this book as worth the listen. I cried and laughed. I really like the characters and I loved the narration. Good job to the Author and Narrator. For a first book, excellent.
    A Must Listen
This was a such a great story. The story line was very well written, and the narrator did a outstanding job sounding out the different characters. Even my husband enjoyed listening to the story. We were on a road trip and I asked him if he wanted to listen to the story. To humor me he did and ended up liking the story. This isn't my husbands type of book, but he thought the characters were interesting. If you like Historical Romance you'll love this one!
    Would Highly Recommend
I really enjoyed every part of this book. The story line, the characters and the narrator. She did a wonderful job of keeping the characters separated and her voice was pleasant with minimal swallowing sounds. One of the best I have listened to.

    Davina Porter makes this book
Davina Porters voice ranges from girls to old women, from boys to old men and she can sing to. She is by far the best narrator around. I picked this series because she narrates them, but beyond that the book itself is great as well. I'm looking forward to ESCAPE FROM STONEWYCKE, the next book in this series.

    Publisher's Summary:
The second book in Philippa's stunning new trilogy, The Cousins War, brings to life the story of Margaret Beaufort, a shadowy and mysterious character in the first book of the series - The White Queen - but who now takes centre stage in the bitter struggle of The War of the Roses.
The Red Queen tells the story of the child-bride of Edmund Tudor, who, although widowed in her early teens, uses her determination of character and wily plotting to infiltrate the house of York under the guise of loyal friend and servant, undermine the support for Richard III and ultimately ensure that her only son, Henry Tudor, triumphs as King of England. Through collaboration with the dowager Queen Elizabeth Woodville, Margaret agrees a betrothal between Henry and Elizabeth's daughter, thereby uniting the families and resolving the Cousins War once and for all by founding of the Tudor dynasty.
    Members Reviews:
    Good narration but dreadful accents
The book was the usual absorbing Philippa Gregory historical 'faction', and on the whole was excellently narrated but the lead narrator's attempt at a Welsh accent sounded comically Indian and her child Henry's voice was annoyingly squeaky. It was a horrible note in an absorbing story and if narrators cannot create and sustain a plausible accent, they should just use their own voice. Especially when they have a pleasant one, as this narrator does.
Another fab book from Philippa Gregory!
What did you love best about The Red Queen?
For Gregory fans, this was a new departure: a less loveable main character and a harder historical period to relate to. I enjoyed getting a new perspective on an era that, as a History teacher, I still find confusing. The author really brings to life the difficult position women were in at that time and the amazing strength the Red Queen had, in order to achieve what she did.
Would you recommend The Red Queen to your friends? Why or why not?
Would definitely recommend to friends - well written and read, exciting, interesting and truly amazing, knowing that most of it actually happened.
    Which scene was your favorite?
In the early parts of the book, the true horror of what her marriage as a child-bride to a much older man must have been like are amazingly effective and haunt you for the rest of the book. Not exactly a favourite scene but a memorable few chapters that make you glad to be living in the 21st century!
    A wicked woman wins!
Unusually the "heroine" of the story is obnoxious: self-righteous, full of pride and scheming, all the time believing that God is on her side and that she has been chosen for great things. But it's a crackingly good story even when one knows how it will finally end. I thought the book got better and better as the pace of history quickened. I don't know how accurate some of the details are regarding Richard Third's culpability over the presumed murders of the Prices in the Tower. I don't think anybody is sure, but this book gives a plausible alternative to Shakepeare's version the latter coloured by a Tudor queen being on the throne.
The female reader does a great job of dramatizing the narrative by her ability to create different voices for the characters.
    Fiction based on history
Brilliant, thoroughly enjoyed it. I love fiction based on an actual historical character. It doesnt have to be factually accurate for me.
