Enjoyable!
Pride's Run begins with Pride being help captive by her Master. She's not the only one being held though. There are several of them like her, and when she finally gets the last straw she realizes she must get out before it's too late.
That proves harder than she thought, and she ends up finding an ally named Logan along the way. However, Logan is also keeping secrets, and as they continue on their journey they must come to trust each other before it is too late.
Pride's Run starts off very interesting. It was something new and fresh, and I just adored it. However, when it came to Pride and Logan I had conflicted feelings. I didn't really feel much of a connection between them. It was hard for me to understand it.
Then there was the issue with Stone that didn't make a lot of sense to me either.
Other than that I really enjoyed this story. It had a very fierce heroine that I truly admired, and I enjoyed reading this one.
Flat and emotionless
It's a slow-moving book, strange and difficult to get into. Too much explanation, description and info-dumping in the beginning, yet the world-building was lacking. I couldn't get a clear picture of what exactly a Lupher is. I thought they were shapeshifters but it's clear they aren't. They do "shade" (transform) but not into an animal. When they have shaded, they still look the same except for having fangs and growing claws where fingernails used to be, oh and thickened skin on their torso which protects vital organs from getting injured. Yet they still shed their clothes before shading... why, if your basic form or shape doesn't change? I could not picture the 'thickened skin' thing at all; my mind went to calluses, scaly reptilian hides and Kevlar vests. However, shading does bring out animal instincts and abilities like heightened senses and amplified strength. So... they become an animal that doesn't look like an animal? It was confusing. I also can't quite understand why call it "shading"? Shading makes me think of sketching and drawing or like the shade of a tree and it doesn't make sense to me at all in this context. Might as well have made up a word which doesn't exist.
Pride is a tracker. It sounds like an inborn ability, not a trained skill, but there's nothing said as to what makes her such a good tracker. If she has been in captivity all the while, how did the master discover her tracking skills? It is also unclear exactly what is keeping the Luphers from mounting an attack against the master once their collars are released. They are, after all, stronger and faster than the human 'handlers'. They are so cowed, yet I couldn't really see a good reason for it.
The story is written in first person from Pride's POV.
