You cannot be free unless and until you know exactly what it is that governs, shapes, and directs the apparatus that controls your behavior and the results that behavior gets you. That apparatus is, of course, your mind; more specifically, your paradigms. You'll be amazed at some of the obvious, and not-so-obvious, influences that you are allowing to shape your life.

    Hmm
This book wasn't what I expected. I expected for him to walk us through getting rid of the paradigms. Instead of listening to a story about what they are about. We all got paradigms, teach us to get rid of them. It's like going to a doctor when you're sick with the flu. I don't go to the doctor to find out, how the flu virus was created, when, who it affects and for how long. I just go there to get cured. So, I expect the same about paradigms, don't lecture me about them, show me how to get rid of them.

Good overview, but best with the series if you want it to be more in depth.

    Publisher's Summary:
The answers to these questions can be found in a new understanding of how your brain interacts with your body, the space around your body, and the social world. Every point on your body, each internal organ, and every point in space out to the end of your fingertips is mapped inside your brain. Your ability to sense, move, and act in the physical world arises from a rich network of flexible body maps distributed throughout your brain.
The science of body maps has far-reaching applications. It can help people lose weight, improve their ability to play a sport, or assist recovery from stroke. It points the way to new treatments for anorexia and phantom limbs. It helps explain out-of-body experiences, auras, placebos, and healing touch. It provides a new way to understand human emotions from love to hate, lust to disgust, pride to humiliation.
With scientific discoveries from every corner of the globe, Sandra and Matthew Blakeslee have written a compelling narrative that is positively mind-bending and that will appeal to readers of Sharon Begley's Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain.
    Editorial Reviews:
Award-winning voice actor Kate Reading delivers a compelling performance of The Body Has a Mind of Its Own: How Body Maps Help You Do (Almost) Anything Better by scientists Sandra Blakeslee and Matthew Blakeslee. Her gentle, sonorous voice makes this complex research on the science of body maps seem simple and accessible. This audiobook explains how the brain interacts with the body. An understanding of body maps can be applied to weight loss, sport, or recovery from physical illnesses. It also unlocks new insight into human emotions.
    Critic Reviews:
"Engaging without being simplistic, this is the only title devoted to body mapping for a nonspecialist audience (other books touch on the topic in their discussions of broader subjects)." (Library Journal)

    This explains alot
It was an interesting book and while I did find it interesting as I listened to it, there were only a couple of things that really stood out in terms of recall. As the title says, its about how your brain maps your body and brain flexibility.
What I recall most is a condition called the yips and that reflexology seems to provide a truly effective connection to the brain.
Yips is a movement disorder that is associated with sports activities such as putting in golf. I think of it as carpal tunnel of the brainwhereby long-time commonly repeated activities become nearly impossible to do properly due to things such as twitches and loss of timing.
I have played (still do) softball for years and have always made my throws from shortstop to first base accurately. Then about 2 years ago, I lost it. My throws during warm-ups are fine but put me in a game situation, I have the hardest time getting an accurate throw no matter how much time I take to throw it. So, I tried explaining to my teammates that I have the yips, and well, you can imagine what they thought of my self-diagnosis.
Reflexology, such as walking on smooth stones or putting a vibrating insole in your shoes does seem to somehow help the brain remap itself and help cure the yips.

With everyday normal life moving too fast to comprehend, people are turning to the bizarre and wacky for comfort. Now, director of the Skeptics Society Michael Shermer explores the very human reasons why we find other worldly phenomena, conspiracy theories, and cults so appealing. The eternal search for meaning and spiritual fulfillment leads us astray by extraordinary claims and controversial ideas, particularly those in the realms of superstition and the supernatural. This celebrates the scientific spirit and the joy to be found in rationally exploring the world's greatest mysteries.

Ok but not as good as How We Believe
This book contained many of the same arguments in the author's other book, How We Believe, with additional discussion of topics such as the Holocaust deniers as well creation scientists. There was too much debunking of the deniers and creationists and not enough analysis of why people believe such things. I suppose the reasons why people believe nonsense is really limited to a few reasons, such as hope, fear, laziness, etc., that are applicable to a variety of situations. There's not a whole lot more that can be said about this.
No need to read both of the author's book. I liked How We Believe much better than this one.
    Tricky concepts made easy
This book is really clear and easy to follow without being patronising. I love the section on logical fallacies.

Every night you receive messages from the deepest recesses of your subconscious mind: you dream. But often these messages are cloaked in mysterious symbols and imagery. Only by learning to understand and interpret them can you take full advantage of the knowledge and power hidden within your dreams. This classic work of dream interpretation takes you through the classic Jungian approach to dreaming philosophy and psychology. It includes a simple, clear explanation of the basic concepts of Jungian psychology, the building blocks for his understanding of dreams, a six-step method to interpreting your dreams, and key elements of Jungian dream interpretation, including archetypes, complexes, and the collective unconscious.

A decent aid to Jungian study
The speaker is obviously well informed, but I find this presentation lacking. It is, however, very unrealistic to expect to be an expert in dream analysis in just an hour. More could have been said, and more could have been expanded upon, especially given examples. If one has been studying Jung and dream analysis for a few months with some consistancy, it is unlikely that much will be extracted from this presentation. It is a good review though, and I must admit that a few things he said helped me to better grasp Jungian theory. I advise anyone who is looking for Jungian material to give this a chance, each experience will be different. This file is inexpensive and short, so there really isn't anything to lose.
    A good intro to Jung
Jung's model of the psyche in a nutshell. Tha author does a good job at explaining the key concepts of analytical psychology and gives a short step by step account of how to go abaout making sense of your mind's night time creations.
    Review
Excellent introduction for anyone wanting to learn about Jungian dream interpretation. Once in a while I listen the audio file again, and everytime I understand some new meaning.
    Simple but good
Although this is a basic introduction to Jung and dream interpretation, it is brief and well done and will give you a basic understanding of Jungian interpretation that is an excellent foundation for dreamwork that is true to yourself.
    Save your money
My advice is to save your money on this one. What I got out of it was more of how Freud and Jung differ on their dream theories than on actual dream interpretation. The help this title promises in helping you remember your dreams is literally...put a notebook and pen by your bed and record your dreams.

    Title: Awkward
Subtitle: The Science of Why We're Socially Awkward and Why That's Awesome
    Author: Ty Tashiro
    Narrator: George Newbern
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 57 mins

    Publisher: Harper Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 42 votes
Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
In the vein of Quiet and The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth comes this illuminating look at what it means to be awkward - and how the same traits that make us socially anxious and cause embarrassing faux pas also provide the seeds for extraordinary success.
As humans, we all need to belong. While modern social life can make even the best of us feel gawky, for roughly one in five of us, navigating its challenges is consistently overwhelming - an ongoing maze without an exit. Often unable to grasp social cues or master the skills and grace necessary for smooth interaction, we feel out of sync with those around us. Though individuals may recognize their awkward disposition, they rarely understand why they are like this - which makes it hard for them to know how to adjust their behavior.
Psychologist and interpersonal relationship expert Ty Tashiro knows what it's like to be awkward. Growing up, he could do math in his head and memorize the earned run averages of every National League starting pitcher. But he couldn't pour liquids without spilling and habitually forgot to bring his glove to Little League games. In Awkward, he unpacks decades of research into human intelligence, neuroscience, personality, and sociology to help us better understand this widely shared trait. He explores its nature vs. nurture origins, considers how the awkward view the world, and delivers a welcome counterintuitive message: the same characteristics that make people socially clumsy can be harnessed to produce remarkable achievements.
Interweaving the latest research with personal tales and real world examples, Awkward offers reassurance and provides valuable insights into how we can embrace our personal quirks and unique talents to harness our awesome potential - and more comfortably navigate our complex world.

    Worth Listening
What made the experience of listening to 100 Simple Things You Can Do to Prevent Alzheimer's the most enjoyable?
There is a lot of worthwhile information in this book. I have tried a few of these items and can tell they make a difference for me.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
Off to the Health Food Shop!
What did you like best about 100 Simple Things You Can Do to Prevent Alzheimer's? What did you like least?
The book gave good practical advice in easy-to-listen to chunks. It tackled Alzheimers as a problem that could affect all of us, although there are things we can do to prevent it.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
It wasn't actually a story. It was fine just the way it was as a self-help book.
Did Susanna Burney do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
There were no different characters! This is a non-fiction book with practical advice on dementia prevention.
Was 100 Simple Things You Can Do to Prevent Alzheimer's worth the listening time?
Yes, it was. I would listen to ten different points every day, while walking my dog, so that I could 'digest' them mentally.
    Any additional comments?
We all need to take responsibility for our health., Being informed is one sensible way to do so.
Will the real cause please stand up
An interesting version of the round up article. Lots of good information ... probably lots of questionable information. Interesting to listen to. It is a compendium of what scientists think right now about what one could do to sort of bail the brain out by making new brain cells faster than it can leak and sink.
the author repeats herself, and it is not clear from much of her evidence, that it is evidence for anything more than association. An increase in the chance of getting Alzheimer's is associated with eating more red meat. ...

    Publisher's Summary:
iDisorder: changes to your brain's ability to process information and your ability to relate to the world due to your daily use of media and technology, resulting in signs and symptoms of psychological disorders, such as stress, sleeplessness, and a compulsive need to check in with all of your technology.
Based on decades of research and expertise in the "psychology of technology", Dr. Larry Rosen offers clear, down-to-earth explanations for why many of us are suffering from an "iDisorder". Rosen provides solid, proven strategies to help us overcome the iDisorder we all feel in our lives, while still making use of all that technology offers.
Our world is not going to change, and technology will continue to penetrate society even deeper, leaving us little chance to react to the seemingly daily additions to our lives. Rosen teaches us how to stay human in an increasingly technological world.

Web Therapy in the Wrong Modality
What could Larry D. Rosen have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Dr. Rosen could have understood the technology better.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
It doesn't take any longer to say "Facebook" than it does "FB." Written abbreviations need not always be duplicated on the audio representation. Avoid redundancy. "If you downloaded this audiobook digitally..." Well, I could hardly download it analogically.
    Any additional comments?
As a technology geek who sometimes feels overwhelmed by it all, I was attracted to this book because it appeared to be handled from the perspective of a kindred spirit - someone who gets the technology and has analyses and ideas on how to take a more relaxed approach to dealing with the constant barrage of notification and information.
Instead, my anxiety is heightened by the author's constant misuse of terminology and misunderstanding of the technology and services involved. His forte is clearly psychology, and, in his endeavours to talk about digital devices and social networking, comes across as an old-timer trying to appear hip while brow-beating this newfangled computer stuff. If you're happy to "check your Twitter page," spend time "texting" on your "Facebook page," using a an "SNS" ("Social Networking System") and blocking a narcissist's comments from "your Facebook page" when they're commenting on a friend's status (or "page") update, and analysing someone's personality type based on the "20 main photographs" on their "page," then this may be for you.
The pop psychology "science" itself is weak at best. For example, a large number of respondents to a survey said they intended to take a "portable electronic device" with them on vacation.

Proprio come in Ho'oponopono.
