Title: Life Is Your Best Medicine
Subtitle: A Woman's Guide to Health, Healing, and Wholeness at Every Age
    Author: Tieraona Low Dog, M.D.
    Narrator: Hillary Huber
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 8 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-04-12
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 14 votes
Genres: Self Development, Motivation & Inspiration
    Publisher's Summary:
"The division between conventional and traditional medicine is as artificial as the division between science and nature. They can be woven together in a fashion that meets our physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. This is the foundation upon which integrative medicine is built."
    Tieraona Low Dog, M.D.
InLife Is Your Best Medicine, Dr. Low Dog weaves together the wisdom of traditional medicine and the knowledge of modern-day medicine into an elegant message of health and self-affirmation for women of every age. This is a book that can be listened to from beginning to end but also dipped into for inspiration or insight about a particular physical or mental health issue or remedy. We learn that, despite the widespread availability of pharmaceutical medications, advanced surgical care, and state-of-the-art medical technology, chronic illness now affects more than 50 percent of the American population. The evidence is overwhelmingly clear that much of the chronic disease we are confronting in the United States has its roots in the way we live our lives. Research shows that if Americans embraced a healthier lifestylewhich includes a balance between rest and exercise, wholesome nutrition, healthy weight, positive social interactions, stress management, not smoking, limited alcohol use, and no or limited exposure to toxic chemicalsthen we could prevent 93 percent of diabetes, 81 percent of heart attacks, 50 percent of strokes, and 36 percent of all cancers. This means that each one of us has the power to shift the odds of being healthy in our favor. If you do get sick, being fit gives you a much better chance for getting well. Your health has a great deal more to do with your lifestyle and a lot less to do with taking prescription drugs than most people realize.
Tieraona Low Dog, M.D., with the charisma of a Native American elder, represents a 21st-century wise woman actively building a platform in the new landscape of self-help health care. A renowned speaker, she is a key faculty member at Andrew Weils Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona and a leader in national health policy and regulatory issues.
    Critic Reviews:
"This title will be well received by self-help readers, who can either read it from cover to cover or dip into it for insight and practical information. Low Dog is an expert in many of these areas, not least those topics that resonate with her life philosophy that the everyday stuff of people's lives influences their ability to be healthy and whole." Interesting.
She gives some interesting info but nothing especially new if you are already health conscious and living a healthy lifestyle.
She is very interesting and it's an easy read, using info from many sources.
    Very good read
I had many life experiences similar to Dr. Low Dogs and learned the most from the ones that were the hardest, as she seemed to do.
I like the way she writes, no excess, readable, relatable with no effort. Sent this book to my sister to read & might get myself another
copy or one of her other books. Long life and happiness Dr. Low Dog.
Recommended to heal anything that ails you!

Loved this book from chapter 1 when
Cheryl talks about her Polish grandmother. I was lucky enough to have a mom like that. She was definitely the Matriarch of our family. She was the essence of selfless love and I always felt that her faith and daily devotion to praying the rosary blessed her and our family. She took care of my dad for 20 years as he battled a chronic illness and finally succumb to lung cancer. She did this and still found time to cook special meals when we visited and read stories to her grandchildren. We were blessed to have her in our lives for 16 more years after my dad passed. I'm so glad my daughters could witness the joy she found in each new day and how her faith gave her strength to gracefully handle the tough times. I wish there were more role models in the world like my mom, but unfortunately many people never get to feel such unconditional love.
    Wrapped Up
This book has been shared with my friends rediscovering their Catholic faith because of its reflection on women's spirituality. These vignettes have help all of us slow down and reset our priorities with our marriage, family and multiple communities.
It highlights our hunger living in the secular world.
    Very inspirational.
I loved this book. I especially liked the format of first hearing Cheryl's experience and then Teresa's. This showed to me that God has many different ways/views of giving women the many gifts that are unique to women. It made me feel proud and empowered to be a woman and to rededicate my unique and special gifts that have been given to me from my creator during my pilgrimage here on earth. We need more books out there celebrating women instead of as Teresa states "always telling us what we aren't" in this culture that destroys the very beautiful things that make up our dreams, hearts and souls and instead focuses on the empty, superficial, worldly views in our culture today, which, I believe, destroys the very essence of women today. Thank you both for sharing your personal stories and offering hope to all of us women out here.
    Great prayer group study!
We've used this book in our prayer group as a way of guiding our discussions and giving us a common platform from which to discuss, We used the journals but kept those private. We all love Teresa Tomeo! More studies like this are needed!
    Easy to Relate
I enjoyed reading the two women's different reactions in each chapter. The book was an easy read and I could relate to much of what the two authors shared. It felt like we were having a nice conversation together.

Purchased on Sunday, listened to it ASAP - YES
Where does Success and Happiness rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I am amazed, but this is a really great book. It's in the top 10
What did you like best about this story?
He delivers distinctions of SUCCESS and HAPPINESS and examples that I can not get out of my mind. IE his friend with n o hands who is a tennis pro. NO HANDS did not stop this guy from achieving his dream. Andrew makes it clear that the power is in struggles we all deal with. I only read this yesterday and I am uncovering struggles I gave up on. Like learning spanish. Making a lot of money.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I loved a lot of scenes. One scene was "BARRY the barracuda". It's about self imposed limitations. Of course I knew ALL about this already, but after hearing about Barry, I can see how many limitations I created for myself.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
hardship and struggles are keys to success and happiness
    Any additional comments?
I think I will listen to this book over and over, this guy has magic.
    Awesome advice
A great version of the the written books. Highly recommended. Although I miss seeing all the lovely cartoons.
The best book on happiness by far *****
I often read about 2 to 3 books per week, This book is about happiness this book is by far the best book to date this book is the book I keep returning to time and time again the information is clear and real.
    Excellent
Lots of great, thought-provoking ideas presented in a fun, meaningful context. Easy to get through in bits and pieces. Loved the anecdotes and analogies. Very, very worthwhile, even if you've already read a number of similarly themed books.
    Loved this book!
Easy to listen to and wasn't too long for a self help style book. No weird rituals, no promises of overnight wealth just full of sound advice.

    Members Reviews:
    It isn't all about money
liked this book a great deal. as much as it is about money the author focuses on the source of the issue, which usually can't be described in dollars and cents.
    Well-spoken narration was not enough.
Another "self-help" book about someone that helped himself... although apparently the help was never needed. I found someone wealthy speaking about "curing wealth" to be less-than poignant.
    GREAT
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Wealth Cure?
The sermon about the SLAVE CARD !
the borrower is servant to the lender
Which character as performed by Cary Hite was your favorite?
    n/a
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    made me think
Great book on how to 'think about' your money
Would you listen to The Wealth Cure again? Why?
Yes, personally I do think much along the lines of Hill Harper when it comes to money. There are so many people.marketers trying to convince you otherwise. This helps bring me back to my beliefs and keeps me financially on track.
What did you like best about this story?
I enjoyed the personal examples he used.
Have you listened to any of Cary Hite???s other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No
What???s an idea from the book that you will remember?
Really think about why you are spending money. Make sure it fits within you financial scope.
    Any additional comments?
I would recommend this to everyone. I think if we all thought this way about money the country would not be in the economic mess its in right now.

Title: If They Give You Lined Paper, Write Sideways
    Author: Daniel Quinn

Length: 5 hrs and 52 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-08-11
    Publisher: steerforth press l.l.c.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 32 votes
Genres: Self Development, Motivation & Inspiration
    Publisher's Summary:
In Ishmael, Daniel Quinn offered new ways of seeing and understanding human history and our collective future. His message was transformative for millions of people, and Ishmael continues to attract tens of thousands of new readers and listeners each year. Subsequent works, such as The Story of B and My Ishmael, expanded upon his insights and teachings, but only now does he finally tackle the one question he has been asked hundreds of times but has never taken on: "How do you do what you do?"
In If They Give You Lined Paper, Write Sideways, Quinn elucidates for listeners the methods behind his own thought processes, challenging and ultimately empowering them to view the world for themselves in creative, perhaps even revolutionary, ways.
If They Give You Lines Paper, Write Sideways also includes Quinn's never-before-published essays "The New Renaissance" and "Our Religions". There is a scientific consensus that global warming is approaching a tipping point beyond no return faster than had previously been predicted. Quinn has long portrayed humans as "a species of beings, which, while supposedly rational, are destroying the very planet they live on." So what are we to do? There has never been a plan for the future - and there never will be. But something extraordinary will happen in the next two or three decades; the people of our culture will learn to live sustainably - or not. Either way, it will be extraordinary. The sooner we understand this reality, the greater the chances that human society will transform itself, so that the human race might have a future.
    Critic Reviews:
"An originality and a clarity that few would deny." (The New York Times)
    Members Reviews:
Great for those who like DQ books. A "how to"
for those of us who have read Daniel Queens books and wish to apply the readings and practices in their everyday life
A conversation should be just that.
I usually enjoy Quinn and his content very much, but this audio book, I found having only one voice reading both sides of a conversation hard to follow and at times annoying.
    Hand-wavy, but strong ultimate message
Would you listen to If They Give You Lined Paper, Write Sideways again? Why?
Yes. Listening to people analyze arguments is always a good training that can be repeated.
    Any additional comments?
    Enjoyable.
With Ishmaal, Daniel Quinn introduces a lot of new modes of thinking/perceiving that are interesting, but some of his arguments are built on scientific ignorance, namely his arguments about what animals do or don't do, and what humans do that animals don't.
If not properly understood, Ishmael can leave a reader with the impression that Quinn is a "return to nature" hippie.
"If They Give You Lined Paper, Write Sideways" brings you through his thought process, in a form similar to a Socratic Dialog, and really gives depth to his thoughts. He discusses his methods, and goals of his messages.
I do find however that he still often builds his narrations with unprovable assumptions, or assumptions that violate ockham's razor.. almost as if he is spoon feeding you a perspective. Despite this, this book does promote skepticism and deep analysis.
His grand point however, is strong enough to stand despite any of my criticisms.

Could you lose weight if you put $20,000 at risk? Would you finally set up your billing software if it meant that your favorite charity would earn a new contribution? If youve ever tried to meet a goal and came up short, the problem may not have been that the goal was too difficult or that you lacked the discipline to succeed. From giving up cigarettes to increasing your productivity at work, you may simply have neglected to give yourself the proper incentives.
In Carrot and Sticks, Ian Ayres, the New York Times best-selling author of Super Crunchers, applies the lessons learned from behavioral economics - the fascinating new science of rewards and punishments - to introduce readers to the concept of commitment contracts: an easy but high-powered strategy for setting and achieving goals already in use by successful companies and individuals across America. As co-founder of the website stickK.com (where people have entered into their own commitment contracts and collectively put more than $3 million on the line), Ayres has developed contractsincluding the one he honored with himself to lose more than 20 pounds in one yearthat have already helped many find the best way to help themselves at work or home. Now he reveals the strategies that can give you the impetus to meet your personal and professional goals.
Ayres shares engaging, often astounding, real-life stories that show the carrot-and-stick principle in action, from the compulsive sneezer who needed a stick (the potential loss of $50 per week to a charity he didnt like) to those who need a carrot with their stick (the New York Times columnist who quit smoking by pledging a friend $5,000 per smoke...if she would do the same for him).
Youll learn why you might want to hire a professional nagger whom youll do anything to avoidno, your spouse wont do!and how you can hand-tie your future self to accomplish what you want done now. Youll find out how a New Zealand ad exec successfully sold his smoking addiction, and why Zappos offered new employees $2,000 to quit cigarettes.
    Critic Reviews:
"For about thirty years there has been increasing study of how people try to manage, and sometimes succeed in managing, their own behavior: smoking, eating, procrastinating, drinking, losing their temper, fears and phobias, games, fingernails.... The list goes on. Here is an entertaining report on one of the basic techniques of overcoming what the ancient Greeks called 'weakness of will.' All can enjoy it; many may discover it therapeutic." (Thomas C. Schelling, 2005 Nobel Laureate in Economics)
    Members Reviews:
    Terrible
What disappointed you about Carrots and Sticks?
I tried so hard to like this book.. it just lacks any substance, it is so dry.. and if that doesn't put you off - it is full of self-promotion / plugs for the author's web business.
I rarely give up on a book, but this was one that I simply could not go any further than half way.. sorry Ian. But that was four hours that I will never get back.
I really could not and would not recommend it to anyone.
    Narrator drove me away
I had a difficult time focusing on the content of the book through the awkward growl of Mayer. It often sounded like he was narrating a movie preview, and generally came across as a detached presentation of words with artificially injected inflection.

    Average book with horrible narration
Sex energy? Hexes? Bad science throughout, and a tiny bit of inspiration sprinkled in. HORRIBLE narrator, couldn't pronounce half the words, mumbled over other parts, spoke so fast at times he was impossible to understand, and didn't pause at times that clearly called for it. recanize? skeptatism? and about 20 more... just awful.
Very good content for self awareness, motivation and positive outlook for life
This book is a secret document to knowing oneself . Seldom in this world does one stop and think how and why one acts and does things the way they do . We think we know ourselves totally when most of us really don't . This book helps us understand how we can understand and control our thoughts for happiness and satisfaction through better results .
I had a very tough time getting used to the narrator because he speaks fast and has a bit of a robotic tone. I would have liked someone to be slower and give pauses at statements that require thought. Having said that by some mysterious force I got used to him by the 5th chapter and didn't mid him. at all beyond that. So if you have a tough time with the narration may be being a little patient will help .
Have a good listen and enjoy ! )
    Narration Too fast
What aspect of Jai Hutchersons performance would you have changed?
The Narration should be very slow for people to follow and digest the content. Unlike several other audiobooks that I have listened to, the narration of this book is too fast.
It is as fresh today meeting the needs of people.
It shows you how to meet your goals an surpass them and to make greater sterides than you would have thought possible.
    This book is amazing
This book is very powerful and can help many people who are looking for more than what they have.
