    Great listen!
I didn't want to stop whatever I was doing while listening to this story! John Grisham turns his talents to a football coach and his players rather than lawyers. It was a marvelous tale and will be appreciated by all, but especially those who have involvement in high school psorts.
    Engrossing story
I don't like sports. I don't like football, especially. I think people who are "stuck" in their high school or college years are silly and immature. BUT......it doesn't matter here. The story isn't just about football or sports or guys revisiting their youth. It's much more than that and the story of how one single man could influence the lives of so many was mesmerizing. Another wonderful story from John Grisham. The only negative was the narrator....John himself. He should leave the reading of the story up to a professional reader...one who can act, more or less. John reads in a very monotone like style and it made telling who was "speaking" in the story very difficult to figure out and it tended to tone down the emotion of the story too much. But a good story inspite of the reader.
    Where is the Lawyer?
I loved it!! I loved it, not because the lawyer was missing but because it is such a great story and because the author read it so well. My son hopes to be a high school history teach and coach soccer. What a noble ambition. I called him up and told him he needs to read this book. I think I?ll read it again. I rarely read books twice.
Ex-High School football players MUST READ!
If you ended your high school football career in a town that cared more about the football coach than the mayor....this is a story is a must. This story gives you the double enjoyment of a great story and a stroll down memory lane. I loved it!
    Grisham excels!
I didn't expect to enjoy this book so much. I enjoy football, but this was so much more than just a sports story. I ended the book in tears. John Grisham is a wonderful writer of court room drama and suspense, but he is so much more and he has proved it by his Painted House and Bleachers!

Not a "happily ever after" book!
This struck me as a lovestory without much closure. Left me wanting more. Characters are well developed and it is well written, but this is not your typical "love story" where everyone lives happily ever after. Left me feeling sad. May be a little too close to "real life!"
    Simply beautiful.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I'm not going to say much as I don't want to give away any spoilers. However, 'Nights in Rodanthe' was a sweet tale. Beautiful in its complexities, as well as in its simplicity. Mr. Sparks has a gift for telling truly relatable romance fiction that includes all ages. I appreciate how Mr. Sparks can craft a romantic story about people of all ages. Love does not end at 20 as some in Hollywood would have us believe with their quick, romantic comedy movies. As a professional screenwriter, I would be honored to work with Mr. Sparks on a romantic drama. I have seen all the books that have made it to film and have read every book, regardless if it made it to books and stayed there, or moved on to be a beautiful film.
Mr. Sparks you have a gift for the romantic genre and I hope you continue this journey. If, you should ever need a hand, or simply want some fresh blood to write a romantic drama with, I would be delighted and honored to be a support. Though I am sure this note will not make it to you and I am positive your production company provides you with enough supports.
    With care and respect,
Rachel Reaugh (from Victoria, BC - Canada)
What does JoBeth Williams bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
There is a quiet strength to JoBeth Williams that only comes from owning your own hurt and growing with that hurt and turning it into something that makes her life thriving.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes. And, I did. Twice.
    Nights in rodanthe
This was a great story, one that that came to a full circle with how life happens!
    Nights in Rodanthe
A few days together from a lasting love that transcends time and space until a tragedy ends it.
    First Nicholas Sparks.....
......book I've read and I loved it. Have spent much time on NC/SC beaches and the descriptions of the weather and the storm are perfect. Not to spoil it for anyone, but the characters are very real and the development of their relationship could not be better. I could not put it down and within a couple of weeks I listened to it a second time. JoBeth Williams is the perfect performer for the story. Beautiful warm slightly southern voice.

And he has a father, a very sick old man who lives alone in the ancestral home in Clanton, Mississippi. He is known to all as Judge Atlee, a beloved and powerful official who has towered over local law and politics for 40 years. No longer on the bench, the Judge has withdrawn to the Atlee mansion and become a recluse. With the end in sight, Judge Atlee issues a summons for both sons to return home to Clanton, to discuss the details of his estate. It is typed by the Judge himself, on his handsome old stationery, and gives the date and time for Ray and Forrest to appear in his study.
Ray reluctantly heads south, to his hometown, to the place where he grew up, which he prefers now to avoid. But the family meeting does not take place. The Judge dies too soon, and in doing so leaves behind a shocking secret known only to Ray.
    And perhaps someone else.

    Unremarkable
The book was enjoyable but in the manner of a cheap vanilla ice cream cone; nothing remarkable or extraordinary. And the ending was a too convenient monologue that neatly tied up most of the loose ends. A few mysteries were left unsolved, leaving me wondering if I'd missed key clues and should have figured some of it out myself. But, not being too dreadfully invested in the story, it was easy to turn it off and not worry about the faceless, never-named antagonist.
As this is my first audio book, I can't really rate the narrator. I was pleased, though, to be able to easily follow the narrator as he switched his tone, cadence, and in one case, accent, to switch from one character to another.
    Grisham marches on
With Michael Beck's charming southern accent and Grisham's wonderful story telling technique, this book was impossible to put down. Fact is, I purchased the audio version, and have listened three times. If you like Grisham and Beck, immediately get your hands on this one.
    Great Mystery, Intrigue, & Suspense
I loved this book. Different enough plot to catch you by surprise. Had a hard time turning off the engine in the car. A little law, a little in the psychology and struggles of typical substance recovery (a good lesson for those of you not familiar with it all,) just enough mystery & suspense to keep you glued, and just enough in lessons of tolerance and in loving and accepting those trying and difficult loved ones we cannot change. What I did enjoy was the weaknesses and fears of our hero. I enjoyed watching him mature a develop. Although this book falls under the reserved places of my favorite top four Grisham books, it's still pretty dang good, y'all, & it deserves five stars!
    Duller than a lawbook
Grisham must have been paid by the word for this interminable book. It's main characters are drawn from the Handbook of Literary Cliches, and its plot - what there is of it - would be stretched to fill a short story. Its protagonist, suposedly a professor at a very prestigious law school, is seriously stupid. As an example, here's a man who was raised in a small Mississippi town, supposedly knowing about firearms. Yet he picks up and uses a pistol, without checking on whether or not its loaded (it's not). After making his big discovery, he does nothing but dither about. We're supposed to be sympathetic because his wife left him for a rich man. After the first hour or two, my sympathies were entirely with the wife.

    Publisher's Summary:
Winter, 1919. Amanda Starkey spends her days nursing soldiers wounded in the Great War. Finding herself suddenly overwhelmed, she flees Milwaukee and retreats to her family's farm on Nagawaukee Lake, seeking comfort with her younger sister, Mathilda, and three-year-old niece, Ruth. But very soon, Amanda comes to see that her old home is no refuge - she has carried her troubles with her. On one terrible night almost a year later, Amanda loses nearly everything that is dearest to her when her sister mysteriously disappears and is later found drowned beneath the ice that covers the lake. When Mathilda's husband comes home from the war, wounded and troubled himself, he finds that Amanda has taken charge of Ruth and the farm, assuming her responsibility with a frightening intensity. Wry and guarded, Amanda tells the story of her family in careful doses, as anxious to hide from herself as from us the secrets of her own past and of that night.
Ruth, haunted by her own memory of that fateful night, grows up under the watchful eye of her prickly and possessive aunt and gradually becomes aware of the odd events of her childhood. As she tells her own story with increasing clarity, she reveals the mounting toll that her aunt's secrets exact from her family and everyone around her, until the heartrending truth is uncovered.
Guiding us through the lives of the Starkey women, Christina Schwarz's first novel shows her compassion and a unique understanding of the American landscape and the people who live in it.

    Drowning Ruth
Never thought I would enjoy this book from the write up. It really seemed like a "womens book" ladies don't take this the wrong way but it is a type of book that would appeal to women.
Maybe that statement wasn't fair. I REALLY enjoyed the book regardless of my statement.
I have even bought a copy of the hardback and many friends have borrowed it and enjoyed it as much as I did. I will say it is a little depressing and heavy on the heart as the story progresses . I recommend it to adults only because of the sensitive issues.
Thanks audible for making this available to listeners.
Complex Plot, Revealed in Delicious Pieces.
The listener is carefully led through a complex plot which is revealed in an unexpected and effective manner and only fully, with penultimate sacrifice, at the end of the story. Fully developed, realistic characters and setting portray a world where individual actions and avoiding truth have bold consequences. This intertwined and unpredictable story, focusing on two women and two girl-children flows well over a twenty-year time frame.
    An Excellent Read
I found this book to be captivating, heart wrenching, warming, and compelling. I did not want it to end. The surprise ending is an excellent and spellbinding end! The author is a fantastic writer. I await her next novel.
    Intriguing
I bought this books based on the listeners' favorable reviews and was not disappointed. The author's strengths are characterization and the slow revelation of complications to the plot. I kept drawing different conclusions before the truth was revealed near the end--and although none of my conclusions were correct, I did not feel tricked by the author, not did the ending seemed contrived.

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
From veteran online journalist and BuzzFeed writer Doree Shafrir comes a hilarious debut novel that proves there are some dilemmas that no app can solve.
Mack McAllister has a $600 million idea. His mindfulness app, TakeOff, is already the hottest thing in tech, and he's about to launch a new and improved version that promises to bring investors running and may turn his brainchild into a $1 billion business - in startup parlance, an elusive unicorn.
Katya Pasternack is hungry for a scoop that will drive traffic. An ambitious young journalist at a gossipy tech blog, Katya knows that she needs more than another PR-friendly puff piece to make her the go-to byline for industry news.
Sabrina Choe Blum just wants to stay afloat. The exhausted mother of two and failed creative writer is trying to escape from her credit card debt and an inattentive husband - who also happens to be Katya's boss - as she rejoins a workforce that has gotten younger, hipper, and much more computer literate since she's been away.
Before the ink on Mack's latest round of funding is dry, an errant text message hints that he may be working a bit too closely for comfort with a young social media manager in his office. When Mack's bad behavior collides with Katya's search for a salacious post, Sabrina gets caught in the middle as TakeOff goes viral for all the wrong reasons. As the fallout from Mack's scandal engulfs the lower Manhattan office building where all three work, it's up to Katya and Sabrina to write the story the men in their lives would prefer remain untold.
An assured, observant debut from veteran online journalist Doree Shafrir, Startup is a sharp, hugely entertaining story of youth, ambition, love, money, and technology's inability to hack human nature.
    Critic Reviews:
"Exacting, though not without empathy - Shafrir renders even the most infuriating of her characters with unexpected humanity - the novel is a page-turning pleasure that packs a punch. To call it expertly observed is an understatement." (
    Kirkus)
"[A] deliciously detailed satire." (Jenny Comita,
    W Magazine)
"Don't buy this book. Don't open. Don't start reading it. Because if you do, I can assure you, you won't be able to put it down. I was hooked from the first page and found myself lost in a beautifully-written fiction that so succinctly echoes today's bizarre reality." (Nick Bilton, special correspondent,
    Vanity Fair, and author of
Hatching Twitter: A True Story of Money, Power, Friendship, and Betrayal)
    Members Reviews:
Critically important story about Diversity in Tech
Incredible narrator and a critical story about sexism and racism in tech and startup culture. The way this story covers so many aspects like the Pipeline problem excuse, the way uneven distribution of childcare duties plays out, power dynamics, sexual harassment, double standards, online harassment, mansplaining, nice guys in tech, calling women who disagree with you crazy, etc so effortlessly and complexly is incredible.
    An okay read.
not a fan of the ending... it was an okay book I just feel it ended quite abruptly and there was no character development.
    Loved it
I couldnt stop listening. I needed to know what would happen next. Doree is an amazing writer and hope she has a sequel coming soon.
    Is this my life?
    Loved the variety of characters.

    Publisher's Summary:
It's just seven days before Memorial Day, and a spike in CIA intelligence has pointed to a major terrorist attack on the United States. Now it's up to Rapp to pull out all the stops.
Rapp immediately leaves for Afghanistan, where he leads a special forces unit on a daring commando raid across the border into a remote Pakistani village. Their target: an al-Qaeda stronghold. Within a subterranean room, Rapp and his team discover plans for a catastrophic nuclear attack on Washington, DC.
Information is quickly relayed back to CIA headquarters, and a nuclear emergency support team scrambles to the scene. In a few hours, the freighters have been located and disarmed and the danger has been averted. Or has it? Mitch Rapp can't shake the feeling that the operation seemed just a bit too easy. Rapp follows his instincts on a quest to unearth the whole truth. What he finds is truly terrifying, and with Memorial Day closing fast, Rapp must find a way to prevent a disaster of unimaginable proportions.
    Members Reviews:
    Too bad it was abridged
Mitch Rapp is back and true-to-form. Action packed, well-narrated. Too bad it was abridged (as are all the Mitch Rapp titles available at Audible). My suspicion is that it would have been better had it been unabridged--hence the 4 instead of 5 star rating.
Good book but why is it abridged???
I'm a fan of Vince Flynn's books and I really like Memorial day but would greatly prefer them to be unabridged as they tend to lose a lot in the abridgement and make the plot sound too simple. Better off reading the full book.
    It was Okay
This was my first Vince Flynn book so it took me a little while to get used to his particular style of writing. The storyline was good, but I felt that there were some parts that needed more explanation than what the author gave. In all fairness, though, this could be due to the fact that this is an abridged version of the book.
    Still my dream
I STILL want to be Mitch Rapp.....does this mean I should seek help?
Great story, strange choice for narrator
Unlike the other versions of Vince Flynn novels, this narrator has a soft, refined voice that took a great deal to get used to, since the protagonist is a rough, CIA operative. That said, it's a great story, and once you get past the voice, gripping.

    Enjoy the book but...
I really like the book, but the narrator puts me to sleep. Her voice is so monotone and boring. Often while listening have to fight to stay awake. I hate that an enjoyable book such as this one has such an uninteresting narrator. I like how the author includes a character with ADD and how it affects their life.
    Annoying narration
This is my first Sherryl Woods novel and I love it. I have listened to Christina Traister in other novels and enjoyed her performance, but this one is annoying because it sounds like she has a frog in her throat and needs to clear it. It isn't obvious in some of her character voices, but most of them are 'gravely.' It's annoying, but the story is a delight.
Good Book, except for Porno scene
Just can't understand why a writer finds it necessary to include explicit details of a love scene. It did not add anything to the story. I was listening with my 14 yr old daughter for a while, but thankfully she quit listening before this point! I wish audiobooks had ratings!
    Narrator is terrible
Would you try another book from Sherryl Woods and/or Christina Traister?
I didn't find the writing compelling enough to suffer through the narration. I might listen to another book, if there was a different narrator reading.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I can't listen to another book narrated by Ms. Traister. Her Irish accent is abysmal and her characterizations of others in the book all meld together. Voice is monotone and sing-song and really offers no dramatic quality. I suffered through the narration to finish the story, which was fairly predictable, but better than the narration.
    Disappointed
This was a poorly written story that reminded me of the old romance novels from the 70's. I wouldn't recommend it.

    Members Reviews:
Enjoyable - but not one of Mary Kay Andrews' best
I have become a big Mary Kay Andrews fan, and while I enjoyed CHRISTMAS BLISS, I finished this latest effort with some measure of disappointment.
Weezie Foley and crew are definitely my favorite characters out of all of Andrews' excellent books, and I was very much looking forward to another installment. Andrews usually provides interesting twists and turns, sometimes to the point of pain, but I found CHRISTMAS BLISS entirely too predictable. I found myself seeing each twist's outcome pretty much as soon as it was introduced, and feeling disappointed that I was right. I was hoping for the unexpected, and I didn't find it in this tale. There were also scenes that seemed contrived, almost shoehorned into the story (trying to avoid spoilers here - but I will mention the party Merijoy Rucker threw for BeBe) and didn't seem to flow organically. It almost seemed as if some favorite old character needed a cameo, or that someone had told funny stories about such parties and it somehow needed to be fit in.
And to be honest, I just don't like this new narrator. I could have gotten used to the new voices, although they seemed too cutesy for the characters, particularly Weezie, if McInerney had just used the same pronunciations the previous narrator Isabel Keating had for consistency. Every time she said "BeeBee" instead of "BayBay", I found myself grinding my teeth -- also the change to the surname Stepanik. I almost didn't recognize the word when she said Buleigh. Perhaps these were the pronunciations the author had in mind, but when you have existing audiobooks in the same milieu, it seems logical to try to keep at least some consistency if you plan to change narrators.
Don't get me wrong -- CHRISTMAS BLISS was a fun listen, and well worth the money spent on it. It's just not a favorite. It would have been better if they'd gotten the original narrator for the audiobook, though it still doesn't address some of the predictability.
Another enjoyable episode of Bebe & Weezy
I love Mary Kay Andrews - always download one of her books when I want to listen to something that I can not only identify with and also that I know will make me laugh out loud.
    Cozy Christmas tale
What made the experience of listening to Christmas Bliss the most enjoyable?
I love the development of Weezy and BeBe and the way the story is told from each of their points of view.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Christmas Bliss?
New York at Christmas time is magical and this was captured in the book.
What about Kathleen McInerneys performance did you like?
I've listened to so many MKA books and love this performer.
Who was the most memorable character of Christmas Bliss and why?
Weezy always steals the show but BeBe really was the most memorable in that she had the most transition and personal growth.
    loved it!
I love these characters. This is a good book with a great storyline. my only critique is that i like isabel keating as a narratir more than this reader.

Meg and Alec, busy parents and successful businesspeople from LA, are on a mission to find the holy grail, a certain blue tile that will make their home renovation complete - but soon it becomes clear that their marriage needs a makeover as well. Wonderful book about life and love - Would highly recommend
This is one of the best books I have read (listened to) in a long time. The story just grabs you and I had a hard time putting it down. The aspect I loved most about this book is its perspective on life and love. Although love takes different forms it can last a lifetime, so long if you don't base it off of lists. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wants to escape to Rome for an afternoon by a lake, or an evening with the crickets chirping outside, or even a morning snuggled by a fire.
    Loved this book!
This book is delightful. It is funny, entertaining, well written, compelling & weaves a wonderfully connected path between all the main characters & also an inanimate object (not to give anything away).
it is superbly read/performed by the narrator whose voice has a wonderful tone & he is spot on with the different accents & speech innuendos. I wish this author had more books on Audible.
For those who love and love Rome
I am not familiar with Rome and its treasures. For those who are,I am sure will enjoy the trip. The concept of the Roman "spirit" as narrator was clever. I enjoyed the chapters being introduced by quotes from renowned writers, artists, geniuses, and philosophers. The characters were charming. The denouement was a lovely twist of there are no coincidences. My only disappointment was the narrator's voice was rather monotone and I would sometimes doze off and have to remember where I was in the novel and go back.
    Totally enjoyable!
This was a refreshing journey with a rewarding end. Most interesting is the author's ability to convey honest emotions from both the male and female perspective. Any book that evokes real tears is a treasure as this one surprisingly does. You almost have a feeling that you've just spent a few days in Roma through Mr.

What she doesn't know is that she's being followed by her Honey-obsessed former employer, Piejack. And he doesn't know he's being followed by Honey's still-smitten, former-drug-running ex-husband, Perry, and their wise-and-protective-way-beyond-his-years 12-year-old son, Fry. And when they all pull up on Dismal Key, they don't know they're intruding on Sammy Tigertail, a half white-half Seminole failed alligator wrestler, trying like hell to be a hermit despite the Florida State coed who's dying to be his hostage.
    Critic Reviews:
"Old fans and newcomers alike should delight in Hiaasen's 11th novel, another hilarious Florida romp [with an] engaging and diverse screwball cast...Hiaasen's humorous touches and his all-too-human characters carry the book to its satisfying close." (Publishers Weekly)

    Well worth the wait!
I too am surprised by the negative comments. I laughed out loud as I have while listening to many of Hiaasen's previous books. The characters were creative, and the plot was typically convoluted. The voices created by the narrator were key to my enjoyment of the book. If you like Hiaasen, give this one a try, and make your own decision! I did not want to turn it off.
    Yes, do it
I'm baffled by the negative reviews. This is classic 4 to 5 stars Hiaasen read by an excellent narrator. I couldn't get off the treadmill because I didn't want to turn off my ipod. Perhaps it's not his best, but even on a bad day, Hiaasen is in his own category. I predict you'll like it.
    Fabulous
I am disappointed with all of the negative reviews. This is one of his first that did not make fun of Florida Tourism. I think that Hiaasen is a fabulous writer that uses Satire to show us where we fail. This book may not have been on a par with Skinny Dip (His best book), but it was up there very close. If you have ever dealt with telephone call centers or telephone solicitors or telephone scams, this is a MUST READ.
    A Huge Disappointment
I'm a giant fan of Carl Hiasson, have enjoyed all his prior books, and looked forward to this one.
I'm sad to say: This book was quite a disappointment. The humour and satire seemed forced; the characters were, in my view, boring. Seems to me like Hiasson is in a rut, and that this one was just churned out.
I couldn't wait to finish the book and had to force myself to do so.
I hope this is just a slight rut in Carl Hiaason's otherwise brilliant career. In all, I cannot recommend this book to anyone.
    Entertaining
I enjoy Carl Hiassen's odd characters and the entertaining way that he alerts readers to the the abuses by money grubbers of nature, but this time, I found it all very predictable (this is my 3rd Hiassen novel). It is clever, well narrated, and gives some food for thought among the absurdity of it all. Good, but not the best.
