A decent Sherlock story, and more simple to follow as well as solve the case for yourself. A good read.
    A Warning about a Well-Paying Job
The Adventure of the Red-Headed League, Goodwin
This is the âGraphic Novel Adventures of Sherlock Holmesâ, similar to the old âClassics Comicsâ from around 1950. It has a short biography of Arthur Conan Doyle (p.46). There is a listing of Arthur Conan Doyleâs works (p.47). Vincent Goodwin wrote this adaptation, Ben Dunn is the illustrator (p.48). These âSherlock Holmesâ stories were written over a century ago. They used to be part of High School English courses. How many other novels from that era are still popular? Doyle followed crime news, his stories were based on true crimes that were adapted for these short stories. The written stories are better than the movies or âgraphic novelsâ, they tell about the life of those times. The drawings of these people make them appear much younger characters compared to the books. Your Public Library has the full uncensored story in âAdventures of Sherlock Holmesâ.
Mr. Jabez Wilson visits Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson about his problem. He is a pawnbroker whose business is down. His assistant Vincent Spaulding showed him an advertisement seeking a red-headed man with the promise of well-paying job. Wilson was hired over the other candidates and performed the copying work with ink, pen, and paper. Then the job ended without a warning! Holmes asks about Spaulding. At night Holmes, Watson, Jones of Scotland Yard, and bank director Merryweather went to that area and visit the bankâs cellar at night. Later two thieves were caught. Holmes explains how he figured it out.
The Game is Afoot Once Again...For Younger Readers!
Conan Doyle's cunning ADVENTURE OF THE RED-HEADED LEAGUE is brought to life for readers 9-12 in this 'Graphic Planet' adaptation by Vincent Goodwin and artist Ben Dunn. Like others in the series, it's sure to please.
RED-HEADED LEAGUE is one of Holmes' more cerebral tales, most of the action taking place in 221B. Holmes cleverly untangles the true purpose behind the odd fortune that befalls Mr. Jabez Wilson. Uncovering the truth behind the Red-Headed League leads to a suspenseful wait in a dark vault followed by...well, you'll have to read the rest of the story to find out what happens.
Goodwin does a good job of invoking the spirit of Conan Doyle's original. Dunn's artwork is good although both Holmes and Watson, at times, look awfully young. Then again, this book - and series - is intended for younger readers!
Interestingly enough, Goodwin's Holmes refuses payment for his services whereas Doyle's Holmes doesn't.
All in all, THE ADVENTURE OF THE RED-HEADED LEAGUE is a well-done, appealing Holmes adventure for the 9-12 set. Recommended.

    Four Stars
Always enjoy her books, and this one is also a good read.
    Dying For You
This wasn't the best of MaryJanice Davidson's work but there were glimpses of some of her well known humor. The whole collection was saved by the last story. I would have liked for the last story to have been it's own novel. All and all not bad but not her best work either.
Davidson consistantly wickedly sexy, and amusing
Davidson's charaters always seem to be going through the trials the rest of us do, with the added handicap or blessing of their supernatural talents. Add to that an almost midwest valley girl slant that stays amusing.
    Dying for you
gave what was expected and more "dying for you" was worth it. But, I do not appreciate having to put alot of words into my review!
    Loved this book!
Was so excited to finally read this great book and I am looking forward to many more by these authors. Thank you very much.

    Publisher's Summary:
In 2004, Akashic Books launched a groundbreaking series of original noir anthologies, starting with the award-winning best-seller Brooklyn Noir. Each book is comprised of new stories, each one set in a distinct neighborhood or location within the city of the book.
In this chilling portrait of America's Sin City, lady luck is just as likely to dispense cold hard cash as a cold-hearted killing.
Brand-new stories by: John O'Brien, David Corbett, Scott Phillips, Nora Pierce, Tod Goldberg, Bliss Esposito, Felicia Campbell, Jaq Greenspon, Jose Skinner, Pablo Medina, Christine McKellar, Lori Kozlowski, Vu Tran, Celeste Starr, Preston L. Allen, and Janet Berliner - see below for full table of contents.
Las Vegas provides the classic sophistication and darkness necessary for a deadly noir story. Stylish, sultry, brimming with ambition and greed, the characters that populate this literary Las Vegas are pushed to the extremes of human experience. From the neon glitter of the Strip to the treacherous views of Red Rock Canyon and Boulder City, from the desperation of Naked City to the racial tensions of the Westside, no other location offers so many different avenues leading to serious trouble.
Many legendary authors have turned their attention to Vegas to investigate the city's moods and mysteries. Now, the most recent crop of acclaimed writers explore the secret neighborhoods and byways of America's most sinful city, offering readers not only compelling noir tales but also an insider's understanding of this steamy oasis. These authors take readers beneath the surface flash of Freemont Street and the Strip and into the gritty multicultural environs of underground Vegas.
    Table of Contents
    Part I: Sin City
    Part II: Neon Grit
Part III: Tales from the Outskirts
    Critic Reviews:
"Just because mystery fans will be unfamiliar with many of the 16 contributors to Akashic's latest entry in its acclaimed noir series (Brooklyn Noir, etc.) doesn't mean the quality isn't up to volumes boasting bigger names. The late John O'Brien, best known for his novel-turned-film, Leaving Las Vegas, offers a typically warped and nihilistic vision of the city with "The Tik", about a thrill-killing duo, narrated by the male half, whose indifference to his prey is chilling. Columnist Tod Goldberg's "Mitzvah" makes good use of the Las Vegas myth that people come to the city to bury their past identities and reinvent themselves. His antihero, mobster Sal Cuperine, has for years posed as Rabbi David Cohen, managing to handle the demands of the pulpit until the strain of his charade becomes too much to bear. While some readers might regret that no tale other than Janet Berliner's "The Road to Rachel" explores Las Vegas's past, this anthology does a fine job of illuminating the dark underbelly of Sin City." Resumen del editor:
Los relatos de Rivera, ha dicho el periodista Rene Jordan, trazan el trayecto inexorable hacia una revelacion siempre astuta y a menudo espeluznante.
He looks just like any other tourist. Why, then, is the secret police after him? In this award-winning story, Rivera's characters and their circumstances can be ridiculous or tragic but they share a sense of the absurd.
Please note: this audiobook is in Spanish.
    Crítica Comentarios:
"Each of the five stories in Varadero y otros cuentos cubanos (includng the prize-winning title piece) is refreshing, with disclosures and discoveries about the characters and the human experience that not only surprise but at times jolt the listener out of complacency. Author Rivera reads his own work, providing a consistent and well-paced narration. Highly ecommended." (Library Journal)
Publisher's Summary:
This collection of short stories contains several gothic tales to bear macabre and chilling witness to writers as diverse as Thomas Hardy, Bram Stoker, Edgar Allan Poe and HP Lovecraft. These tales are designed to unsettle you, just a little, as you sit back, and take in their words as they lead you on a walk to places youd perhaps rather not visit on your own.
Our stories are The Withered Arm by Thomas Hardy, The Judges House by Bram Stoker, Hop Frog by Edgar Allan Poe and The Lurking Fear by HP Lovecraft. These stories are read for you by many readers including Bill Wallis, David Healy and Richard Mitchley.
    Members Reviews:
Exceptional narrations of a classic quartet
Richard Mitchley reads the first two stories; I am never disappointed in his narrations.
Thomas Hardy's THE WITHERED ARM features feminine jealousy, country folklore, and acts of desperation. When a young bride finds her beauty fading, perhaps because of some "witchment," in her anxiety she attempts to restore her charms through extreme means.
In Bram Stoker's THE JUDGE'S HOUSE, a student rents an isolated old house so he can study for his exams in solitude but shortly finds he is anything but alone. The story is much-anthologized for a reason. Listening to it again, visualizing the details, I felt a chill in the air.
Bill Wallis gives a wonderful performance of Edgar Allan Poe's HOP FROG, in which a diminutive member of the court of a sadistic king designs and executes a poetic justice.
David Healy reads THE LURKING FEAR by H.P. Lovecraft with just the right amount of drama without going over the top. The narrator of the story, who describes himself as "a connoisseur of horrors" is drawn to Tempest Mountain, where "fear had lurked for more than a century" in the Martense mansion.
NOTE: In another review, I attributed the "Gothic Tales of Terror" series to "The Story Circle." This series is actually produced by "The Copyright Group" and the two have different narrators. My mistake...sorry!

    Members Reviews:
    Difficult to read in 2017
Holmes is an institution and although he is almost outsmarted in this short story by the attending member of the police it is the usual well written plot with a final twist.
The problem for me was the overt racism, obviously signs of the Victorian era but difficult to read in2017.
review of "The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge"
"The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
"The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge" is one of the many cases of Sherlock Homes. The story has an interesting and bizarre plot as you see it unfold. As the story twists and turns it is remarkable how the story comes to a conclusion for Sherlock Homes.
    The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge
As with all Sherlock Holmes mysteries--those by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and not later pretenders, excepting perhaps Adrian Doyle's few efforts--I truly enjoy reading and re-reading the exploits of the famous detective. Outside of Holmesian enthusiasts, few realise that Conan Doyle was himself the model for Holmes AND Watson, being a medical doctor, and one of the first unofficial consulting detectives anywhere. That designation, "unofficial consulting detective," claimed by Holmes, was one of Conan Doyle's own defining titles. In Doyle, and his combined alter egos, Holmes and Watson, we have the incipient modern "private detective," but with a far greater sense of scientific deduction and evidence gathering.
In "The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge" we have many good examples of Doyle's own methods of deduction, and his working at seeming odds with the official police forces, while in reality complimenting their efforts, and never detracting from their own successes, indeed, often giving them the credit for his own discoveries and resolutions of criminal mysteries.
    Quick Holmes Story
Concise, short Holmes story in typical Doyle fashion. Enjoyable, but less detailed than the longer Holmes adventures. A pleasant read.
    Intriguing Sherlock Holmes
Strange, interesting tale involving Holmes and Watson. Really short, but definitely worth reading. The case involves two countries, and a respectable citizen of Britain.

"Mette Iversdatter's window was a porthole on the winter sky."
Larry Woiwode brings us into the simple and anxious rhythms of life for a Norwegian farm girl in the first decade of the 20th century. Christmas Eve falls in the midst of deprivation as Mette's family prepares to journey to her grandparent's farm. When her father fails to bag a big deer on the journey, they arrive, like everyone else, almost empty-handed. Yet despite frustration and disappointment, this extended family combines their meager resources to create an unexpected marvel that transforms the family's Christmas.
Sharply observed and crisply written, Woiwode's story throbs with truths known to human hearts in any century. He carefully renders the hesitant hopes of a child, the aching disappointments and steady perseverance of her elders, and the surprise of beauty and joy. That prayers may yet be answered - that the provision may be greater even than the promise - is a truth for Christmas and always.

What would have made Twelve Days of Winter: Crime at Christmas - A Partridge in a Pear Tree better?
    A better ending.
Would you ever listen to anything by Stuart MacBride again?
The collection was a bit choppy. If the next was less choppy and easier in some places to follow it would be better. Since my wife is from Glasgow the accent and the ideas were good but I think the presentation of the plot needed help.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    Pear Tree. First chapter.
