Many people have said that the top prize in education is graduating students who are knowledgeable of the basics; however, too many of America's public-school children have not reached that level of stability. One of the reasons is too many students are concentrating more on the school environment than on math and science.

    Author: Joe Wisinski
    Narrator: Pete Ferrand
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 38 mins

    Publisher: Joe Wisinski
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
The United States has fought a war against drinking and driving for more than 100 years. Many battles have been won, but DUI still kills more than 10,000 people in America every year, and injures tens of thousands more. "More Americans have been killed in alcohol-related traffic crashes than in all wars the United States has been involved in since it was founded," according to the National Criminal Justice Reference Service. If the yearly number of DUI-related deaths remains at the same levels, the equivalent of the entire population of a city the size of Erie, Pennsylvania, Green Bay, Wisconsin, or Clearwater, Florida will die over the next ten years. This book examines the impact drinking and driving has on the U.S. and what can be done to stop this senseless slaughter on our highways. It also puts a face on the problem with many real-life stories about how drinking and driving has impacted our citizens.

    Title: Letters to Jenny
    Author: Piers Anthony
    Narrator: Steven Roy Grimsley
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 49 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-07-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
In February 1989, science fiction writer Piers Anthony, author of the Xanth series, received a moving letter. It came from a woman whose daughter, Jenny, was in a coma as a result of severe injuries caused by a drunk driver. She asked Anthony to write to Jenny, an avid fan of his, in the hope that a letter from him would evoke some response. Her request resulted in a series of warm, supportive, and humorous letters written weekly from Anthony to Jenny. These were read to the patient by her mother.
The original letters Anthony wrote between February 1989 and 1990, reproduced here along with Anthony's comments, reveal the author's wit, humanism, and social conscience. Jenny has come out of her coma, but is still confined to a wheelchair. Anthony also named a character in his next Xanth novel after Jenny, whose limited but definite physical responses to his letters indicated how important they were to her.
    Members Reviews:
    Wonderful, and yet
I just recently purchased Letters To Jenny, and did so because I thought it was one of the most touching things I had ever seen on a bookstore shelf. That being the case, I am aghast to see that some people think Anthony is flirting with the child, he isn't, at least not in my opinion, rather he is using humour to pull her through a very difficult time in her life. Through the written word, he is being just as much a doctor as any one of her therapists. The fact that he published these letters exactly as he wrote them in the first place when he had no idea he was going to publish them, gives the reader a glimpse into what he may really be like. You cannot know a person just by their publicity, and this is a tiny glimpse behind the publicity. The only thing about this book that bothers me is how little of the proceeds are going to Jenny's family, but in the mind of Jenny, being in a Xanth book is probably more important than money, and at least they are getting something...which knowing the popularity of this author, could add up to a substanstail amount. Also, for those of you who think that this book is degrading to all concerned, remember that Jenny herself had to give permission to be published, and she was mentally capable of making that choice,we should all respect it.
All in all Letters To Jenny is one of the most touching and truly human stories I have ever read, I have a feeling that every time I pick it up I will learn something new. It proves that every so often someone can take time out of their busy schedule to do something truly kind for a fellow human being.
Don't exspect it to be like Xanth series
If you are looking to see where Letters To Jenny ties in with the Xanth Series, don't.
The two have only one thing in common and that is Jenny Elfs portrayer...
Letters To Jenny is about a young persons life hanging in the balance after a cruel twist of fate and the hands of a drunk driver tried to end her precious life.

You may have seen my article that list arguments that provide reasoning to be against same-sex marriage. This writing is a brief article that provides thriee arguments that those who support - same-sex marriage will most likely use to persuade to be more neutral or even join them in a same-sex marriage movement. I remain neutral on the political issue, but these three arguments are the most frequently used and pack the most punch behind them in their persuasion power. This qualifies as an ethics scholarly article. I have a Bachelor's of Business Management and an Associates Degree of Management Technology.

This audiobook provides a quick look at how the media impacts children and their development. It is designed to be straight forward and to make the listener think.
    Members Reviews:
    Very short - very postulating.
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Might be useful for 5th graders doing a project on media language. Seriously. I'm a media scientists, and I'm not trying to be funny. This is the level of information avaliable in the se 9 minutes,
Would you ever listen to anything by Thomas Hodge again?
Not if it was 9 minutes of claims with no references.
What about Rebecca Lees performance did you like?
Yes, no problem with the reading.
What character would you cut from Children and the Media?
The author as sole authority. In his place I would add references and cases.
    Any additional comments?
This is only 9 minutes. The author makes many arguments, some of which are sound enough, but manages to lose all credibility when he spends the latter part of the small program warning that exposure to unwholesome media stereotypes can literally turn girls into prostitutes.

    Title: Wandering Home
    Subtitle: Essays by Tom Roddy
    Author: Tom Roddy
    Narrator: Tom Key
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-09-14
    Publisher: Looking Glass Books, Inc.
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
For more than 30 years, Tom Roddy presided over the Atlanta Resource Foundation (ARF), which serves as a conduit for bringing people with resources, both monetary and time, together with those who are less fortunate. ARF offers a network aimed at engaging urban Christians to support empowerment instead of entitlement.
Roddy's major work has been to encourage people who in many different ways were bringing hope to those living in Atlanta's most difficult neighborhoods. Tom wrote a non-news newsletter about what was going on in the city and also inside of himself as he came up against the promises and demands of the gospel and the stark realities and disparities of urban life.
Journeying in one city for many decades, he has seen history repeat itself. The same personalities and the same issues keep popping up. There are economic booms and busts, the ongoing displacement of the poor, rising rhetoric around immigrants, and the pull of a retaliatory response to terrorism. When Atlanta won the 1996 Summer Olympics, we were involved in the redevelopment of neighborhoods adjacent to the new Olympic Stadium, he writes. We helped mobilize the faith community to welcome visitors to Atlanta. We created the Summerhill Neighborhood Redevelopment Association and launched Quest Atlanta. Through it all, we could never escape the plight of the poor, especially the homeless.
In this group of essays, he shares his observations and offer insights gleaned from his years of experience.

A lifelong Memphian, Dan Conaway is a communication strategist and freelance writer. He has owned everything from ad agencies to creative boutiques, promoted everything from ducks in The Peabody lobby in Memphis to Grizzlies in the NBA to pandas in the Memphis Zoo, and won recognition for his creativity at every level. Along the way, he has never lost his fascination or his frustration with his storied hometown, and he shares his passion for both equally in his columns and posts.

A Sweet Slice of Soul City!
Being a life-long Memphian, I was happy to discover that Dan Conaway completely captures the experience of this area, both the good and the bad, with a focused eye and a talented pen. I found myself laughing out loud as I followed his warm and witty chronicles of the sights, sounds, history and characters of Memphis. But don't think that you need to be familiar with Memphis to love this book, the author writes with a charming universal appeal. His portrayals of everyday life in a Southern city are so crystalline and entertaining that you will find yourself savoring every story and clever turn of phrase. (Mr Conaway is one of those talents who could write about wallpaper and make it interesting and fun!) I hope that there will be another book to follow this one~
    Good Read
Dan Conaway came to our book club to read excerpts from this book. I had already read this and enjoyed it, but his reading enhanced that. As a native Memphian this book provided a hometown experience from a different perspective for me.
    Outstanding!
Bought as a gift and read it first, so bought a second copy to keep! A very engaging read for anyone, Memphian or not.
    Five Stars
    Exactly what I expected!!
Five Star Writing About a Five Star City
A great read, especially if you, too, are a Memphian. First, a truth in packaging disclaimer, I'm a big fan of Conaway and his columns written for
The Memphis Business News. I haven't lived in Memphis as long as Conaway has, but I've lived here long enough to appreciate his take on all things Memphis. Each story is very well written, funny, and consists of exactly 500 words. An author that is that disciplined deserves our attention.
    Five Stars all the way.

  • A Marriage Proposal Audiobook by Sophie Ward

    Title: A Marriage Proposal
Subtitle: The Importance of Equal Marriage and What It Means for All of Us
    Author: Sophie Ward
    Narrator: Kelly Birch
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-19-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
It has been a long time in coming, but from March 2014, marriage will finally be opened up to same-sex couples in the way it has been enjoyed for so long by their opposite-sex counterparts.
Marriage is the institution through which our lives are defined: We are married, divorced, single, or widowed. It gives shape to our family relationships. Through marriage, we have access to the words for the closest connections in our lives, such as aunts and uncles, grandparents and step-children. Marriage is an internationally recognized institution that eases international travel and work for spouses. It formalizes a union using traditions we have built up and treasure. And marriage is the inspiration behind some of our greatest cultural highlights: Love poems and novels, films, music and songs.
Whether we choose to embrace or accept marriage ourselves, for same-sex couples to have been denied that choice is for them to have been denied a human right. Changes will occur as traditions adjust to accommodate new ceremonies, but as Sophie Ward points out in this poignant Short, the history of marriage is one of constant change over the centuries.
Drawing on her personal experience of both marriage and civil partnership, A Marriage Proposal is a moving exploration of what the opening up of marriage means for couples, their families and society as a whole. It sets out why the argument was settled in the right manner. Above all, it is a celebration of the institution of marriage, of its traditions and of the paramount importance for each and every one of us to be able to choose whether or not to say, with absolute equality, "I do".
    Members Reviews:

A Marriage Proposal: The importance of equal marriage and what it means for all of us by Sophie Ward
âA Marriage Proposal" is an excellent brief book that explores the meaning of marriage for same sex couples and to society in general. Author Sophie Ward presents persuasive and moving arguments in support of equal marriage. This enlightening 43-page book includes the following five chapters: 1. A Short History of Marriage, 2. Our Other Halves, 3. Civil Partnerships v Marriage, 4. The Chapel of Love, and 5. Something New.
    Positives:
    1. Reasonable and heartfelt prose.
    2. Hot-button issue topic handled with utmost respect and care.
    3. Concise. In just 43 pages Ward succeeds to persuade readers with cogent arguments.
    4. An interesting historical look. Interesting observations. âThe Emperor Nero was also reported to have married several men.â
    5. A fascinating biblical look. âThe reviling of homosexuality in the Old Testament should also be seen in the light of other crimes that barred entrance to the Kingdom of God; adultery, thievery, drunkenness, and greed, to name a few.â
    6. Great tidbits. Find out about the first documented same sex marriage.
    7. Compelling arguments that resonate. âBeing forbidden to marry is to be labeled mad, bad or a perpetual child, dismissed to the nursery while the adults decide your democratic rights. There is no dignity in being told you may not aspire to that which your society places among the highest forms of human expression.â
    8. The differences between civil partnerships and marriages.
