    Publisher's Summary:
At the height of World War II, LOOK Magazine profiled a small American community for a series of articles portraying it as the wholesome, patriotic model of life on the home front. Decades later, author Matthew A. Rozell tracks down over 30 survivors who fought the war in the Pacific, from Pearl Harbor to the surrender at Tokyo Bay.
The book resurrects firsthand accounts of combat and brotherhood, of captivity and redemption, and the aftermath of a war that left no American community unscathed. Here are the stories that the magazine could not tell, from a vanishing generation speaking to America today. It is up to us to remember - for own sakes, as much as theirs.

    Very powerful
Love it. It helped me appreciate even more the sacrifices of my father and his generation. They were the greatest generation of all-time.
    Many tears shed
A very moving book. My oldest brother was killed in the Philippines and reading about the war is always an emotional experience. Thanks to Mr Rozell and his stide
    Great Book
Would you consider the audio edition of The Things Our Fathers Saw to be better than the print version?
I hardly ever read non-fiction but I have an undying respect for WWII vets and all they had to endure during those years. So I thought I would give this book a go and glad I did. The stories here need to be told and as the author says in the book almost all the WWii vets are passing away and soon no-one will be around to tell their stories. If you want to know what these vets went through listen or read this book as it is well written and you can almost picture these men as they tell their stories to the author. I think you will enjoy this book.
    Excellent book!
Mainly recounts the war in the pacific. A collection of first person accounts covering the entire war woven together in a concise, chronological fashion. The voice talent are the excellent!

    Title: Last Hope Island
Subtitle: Britain, Occupied Europe, and the Brotherhood That Helped Turn the Tide of War

    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 170 votes
    Genres: History, 20th Century
    Publisher's Summary:
A groundbreaking account of how Britain became the base of operations for the exiled leaders of Europe in their desperate struggle to reclaim their continent from Hitler, from the New York Times best-selling author of Citizens of London and Those Angry Days.
When the Nazi blitzkrieg rolled over continental Europe in the early days of World War II, the city of London became a refuge for the governments and armed forces of six occupied nations who escaped there to continue the fight. So, too, did General Charles de Gaulle, the self-appointed representative of free France.
As the only European democracy still holding out against Hitler, Britain became known to occupied countries as "Last Hope Island". Getting there, one young emigré declared, was "like getting to heaven".
In this epic, character-driven narrative, acclaimed historian Lynne Olson takes us back to those perilous days when the British and their European guests joined forces to combat the mightiest military force in history. Here we meet the courageous King Haakon of Norway, whose distinctive "H7" monogram became a symbol of his country's resistance to Nazi rule, and his fiery Dutch counterpart, Queen Wilhelmina, whose antifascist radio broadcasts rallied the spirits of her defeated people. Here, too, is the Earl of Suffolk, a swashbuckling British aristocrat whose rescue of two nuclear physicists from France helped make the Manhattan Project possible.
Last Hope Island also recounts some of the Europeans' heretofore unsung exploits that helped tilt the balance against the Axis: the crucial efforts of Polish pilots during the Battle of Britain; the vital role played by French and Polish code breakers in cracking the Germans' reputedly indecipherable Enigma code; and the flood of top-secret intelligence about German operations - gathered by spies throughout occupied Europe - that helped ensure the success of the 1944 Allied invasion.
A fascinating companion to Citizens of London, Olson's best-selling chronicle of the Anglo-American alliance, Last Hope Island recalls with vivid humanity that brief moment in time when the peoples of Europe stood together in their effort to roll back the tide of conquest and restore order to a broken continent.
    Critic Reviews:
"Lynne Olson is a master storyteller, and she brings her great gifts to this riveting narrative of the resistance to Hitler's war machine. You will be thrilled and moved - and enraged, saddened, and shocked - by the courage and steadfastness, human waste and stupidity, carelessness and nobility, of an epic struggle.
Last Hope Island is a smashing good tale." (Evan Thomas,
New York Times best-selling author of
    Being Nixon)
"In a series of compelling books in recent years, Lynne Olson has established herself as an authoritative and entertaining chronicler of perhaps the largest single event in human history - the Second World War. Now comes
Last Hope Island, a powerful and surprising account of how figures from Nazi-occupied Europe found Great Britain an essential shield and sword in the struggle against Hitler.

    Title: The Holocaust
    Subtitle: A New History
    Author: Laurence Rees
    Narrator: Eric Vale
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 19 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-18-17
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 52 votes
    Genres: History, 20th Century
    Publisher's Summary:
On June 1944, Freda Wineman and her family arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau, the infamous Nazi concentration and death camp. After a cursory look from an SS doctor, Freda's life was spared and her mother was sent to the gas chambers. Freda only survived because the Allies won the war - the Nazis ultimately wanted every Jew to die. Her mother was one of millions who lost their lives because of a racist regime that believed that some human beings simply did not deserve to live - not because of what they had done, but because of who they were.
Laurence Rees has spent 25 years meeting the survivors and perpetrators of the Third Reich and the Holocaust. In this sweeping history, he combines this testimony with the latest academic research to investigate how history's greatest crime was possible. Rees argues that while hatred of the Jews was at the epicenter of Nazi thinking, we cannot fully understand the Holocaust without considering Nazi plans to kill millions of non-Jews as well. He also reveals that there was no single overarching blueprint for the Holocaust. Instead, a series of escalations compounded into the horror. Though Hitler was most responsible for what happened, the blame is widespread, Rees reminds us, and the effects are enduring.
The Holocaust: A New History is an accessible yet authoritative account of this terrible crime. A chronological, intensely listenable narrative, this is a compelling exposition of humanity's darkest moment.
    Members Reviews:
    Grim but important
Makes for grim but important listening. Rees traces the rise of Hitler and the progressive stages of the Holocaust with great clarity.
There are several important points to take away. Hitler's views on the "final solution" evolved over time; he managed to convey his intentions to his subordinates without actually writing anything down; and one of his key maneuvers was to repeat The Lie again and again, in the absence of evidence and even after his claims had been positively refuted.
Other points: the Allies had the full details on the death camps by 1944; they chose to do nothing for reasons that sound hollow; and the ordinary people who made it possible for Hitler to carry out his extermination were neither hypnotized nor, in many cases, especially conflicted about what they were doing.
Another point, although it's one the author doesn't make explicitly (at least as far as I can remember): unless we are forever vigilant, it could happen again.
Eric Vale is an energetic and expressive narrator.
    FANTASTIC BOOK, BUT HORRIBLE READING
What did you love best about The Holocaust?
The information is very detailed and thoroughly researched. It could not possibly be any better in that respect.
What other book might you compare The Holocaust to and why?
    Night by Elie Wiesel.
How could the performance have been better?
The performance was terrible. Mr. Vale was not the right person to narrate this book. He could not even pronounce names correctly, such as saying Joseph Goebbels name as GO-BELLS, instead of GUR-BELLS, and saying Hermann Göring name, as GORE-ING, instead of GAIR-ING, or even worse saying Lebensraum as LEEBEENSRAM, instead of LAY-BENS-RUM. This book needed a quality, thoughtful, strong voice, with excellent diction.

    Genres: History, 20th Century
    Publisher's Summary:
"The war in Vietnam was not lost in the field, nor was it lost on the front pages of the New York Times or the college campuses. It was lost in Washington, DC." (H. R. McMaster, from the conclusion)
Dereliction of Duty is a stunning analysis of how and why the United States became involved in an all-out and disastrous war in Southeast Asia. Fully and convincingly researched, based on transcripts and personal accounts of crucial meetings, confrontations and decisions, it is the only book that fully re-creates what happened and why. McMaster pinpoints the policies and decisions that got the United States into the morass and reveals who made these decisions and the motives behind them, disproving the published theories of other historians and excuses of the participants.
A gripping narrative, Dereliction of Duty focuses on a fascinating cast of characters: President Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, General Maxwell Taylor, McGeorge Bundy, and other top aides who deliberately deceived the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the US Congress, and the American public.
McMaster's only book, Dereliction of Duty is an explosive and authoritative new look at the controversy concerning the United States involvement in Vietnam.

    Abridged Version Anyone
Found out after reading along with the actual book that this audio book was missing significant sections from the book. Not happy that abridged wasnt included in the review, but still drove home major points of the past.
    Not the complete book
Where are the remains chapters? This only covers 1-4. This is missing several chapter and the introduction.
    Didn't know what I didn't know!
I grew up during this period with a father that was an NCO in the Marines. This book explains much of what I heard and put the pieces in place, finally. We lost cousins, friends to a war that arrogant intellectuals failed to prosecute and win. After 8 years of a similar presidency, the stakes are even higher for the world. Thank God for McMasters and Trump. Win this one guys--make the world safe for my children!
    A must-read. Candid, authoritative, expose'
Read this for an authoritative account of the secrets, policies and politics that drove us into Vietnam. McMaster's account is controversial, principally because of it's harsh truth and the authoritative, unimpeachable source from which out comes - not because of there being any question about the facts he presents.
John Nagl, in his excellent book Knife Fights, describes the sanctions and career damage McMaster was subjected to as a consequent of his his writing Dereliction of Duty.
    His reading is good also.
    Must Read for military leaders.
Great insight from Gen McMaster. This book paints a clear picture of goings on leading to Vietnam.

    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 301 votes
    Genres: History, 20th Century
    Publisher's Summary:
The Nazi regime preached an ideology of physical, mental, and moral purity. But as Norman Ohler reveals in this gripping new history, the Third Reich was saturated with drugs. On the eve of World War II, Germany was a pharmaceutical powerhouse, and companies such as Merck and Bayer cooked up cocaine, opiates, and, most of all, methamphetamines, to be consumed by everyone from factory workers to housewives to millions of German soldiers. In fact, troops regularly took rations of a form of crystal meth - the elevated energy and feelings of invincibility associated with the high even help to explain certain German military victories.
Drugs seeped all the way up to the Nazi high command and, especially, to Hitler himself. Over the course of the war, Hitler became increasingly dependent on injections of a cocktail of drugs - including a form of heroin - administered by his personal doctor. While drugs alone cannot explain the Nazis' toxic racial theories or the events of World War II, Ohler's investigation makes an overwhelming case that, if drugs are not taken into account, our understanding of the Third Reich is fundamentally incomplete. Carefully researched and rivetingly listenable, Blitzed throws surprising light on a history that, until now, has remained in the shadows.

The best "Gotterdammerung" book I have ever read.
I am a 70 year-old physician, specializing in addiction medicine, and still practicing. SUPERB BOOK.
Eye opening exposure to German drug use in WW2
A really fascinating look into the drug regimens and cocktails that were being administered to both the average foot soldier and to Hitler himself. It certainly doesn't make any excuse for their actions but it gives the reader some insight as to why certain decisions/actions were taken by the Germans. I definitely recommend it!
    AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY
Story and narrator seamlessly create a great listen.
Both the story and the choice in narrator help to create a vivid description of drug use in WW2. Would definitely recommend anyone listen to this if you want to more about the drug use of wartime.
Exemplary dissection of third Reich command.
They were all tweaking. That on top of an opportunist, obedient culture that struggled to recover from the decadence and aimlessness of the 20s, and the despicable character even while initially sober of their leadership. Without presenting any of these findings as an excuse or relativation this work presents a thoroughly plausible view and weaves a solid time-line that ended in the most horrifying events mankind ever managed to implement thus far. Madness, hubris and false grandeur reached critical mass and subsequent melt-down once paired with narcotics abuse. A lesson for mankind hopefully.
    Unreal
Incredible look into the reality of Hitler's regime and the driving force behind the aggressive push behind the Blitzkrieg. What might have been if it weren't for effects of drugs on Hitler... he effectively defeated himself.

    Title: The First World War

Length: 13 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-07-17
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 44 votes
    Genres: History, 20th Century
    Publisher's Summary:
A century has passed since the outbreak of World War I, yet as military historian Hew Strachan argues in this brilliant and authoritative new book, the legacy of the "war to end all wars" is with us still. The First World War was a truly global conflict from the start, with many of the most decisive battles fought in or directly affecting the Balkans, Africa, and the Ottoman Empire. Even more than World War II, the First World War continues to shape the politics and international relations of our world. Strachan has done a masterful job of reexamining the causes, the major campaigns, and the consequences of the First World War, compressing a lifetime of knowledge into a single definitive volume tailored for the general listener. Written in crisp, compelling prose, The First World War re-creates this world-altering conflict both on and off the battlefield - the clash of ideologies between the colonial powers at the center of the war, the social and economic unrest that swept Europe both before and after, the military strategies employed with stunning success and tragic failure in the various theaters of war, the terms of peace and why it didn't last.
    Critic Reviews:
"This serious, compact survey of the war's history stands out as the most well-informed, accessible work available." (
    Los Angeles Times)
    Members Reviews:
Outstanding narrative of the military action
Hew Strachan, more than most other authors on the First World War, gives a sense of its global involvement. The initial war in Serbia is described in some detail; the Eastern front gets almost as much attention as the Western front; the war in the Aegean consists of more than just Gallipoli; and there's a whole chapter devoted to the war in Africa. This is probably the best one-volume description of the military action of the war. Where Strachan falls short is in his evocation of the impact of the war on the soldiers fighting it: the mud, the despair, the endless shelling, the body parts blown out of the ground by fresh shelling. But in terms of what he set out to do, it's an outstanding account. The narration by Clive Chafer is serviceable but not particularly emotional.
    Narrator hard to deal with
I don't know if it was my OCD, but the narrator used a distinct and consistent cadence that I found hard to get past. His sentences had a distinct speaking pattern that never seemed to vary and made the material very dull. The story seemed to assume a lot of geographic knowledge that the newcomer to this history probably wouldn't have. If you had some significant knowledge of WW1 before you read this book, it might be better. If you know basics of the War and want to get more in depth, this probably is not a good book to go with.
Outstanding Single Volume History of Great War
This is a great single volume history of the Great War. I recommend John Keegans book for a more complete version but this one gives more depth in certain areas that are not quite as well-covered in other single volumes, like Eastern front, Japans involvement. This is truly a global approach to covering this WORLD WAR. It doesnt spend 90% of its time on the Western Front as is expected in most general history books on the war.
    I highly recommend this book.
    great
loved this book, ww2 has been done to death, not a lot is done to detail the who, what, where, and why of the Great war. Sadly it acheived not the end of all wars, just a reshuffling of the deck.

    Publisher's Summary:
"We are provincials no longer," said Woodrow Wilson on March 5, 1917, at his second inaugural. He spoke on the eve of America's entrance into World War I, as Russia teetered between autocracy and democracy. Just 10 days after Wilson's declaration, Tsar Nicholas II abdicated the throne, ending a three-centuries-long dynasty and ushering in the false dawn of a democratic Russia. Wilson asked Congress to declare war against Germany a few short weeks later, asserting the United States' new role as a global power and its commitment to spreading American ideals abroad. Will Englund draws on a wealth of contemporary diaries, memoirs, and newspaper accounts to furnish texture and personal detail to the story of that month.
March 1917 celebrates the dreams of warriors, pacifists, revolutionaries, and reactionaries, even as it demonstrates how their successes and failures constitute the origin story of the complex world we inhabit a century later.

    Publisher's Summary:
Once upon a time, they taught us to believe. They were the 1980 US Olympic hockey team, a blue-collar bunch led by an unconventional coach, and they engineered perhaps the greatest sports moment of the 20th century. Their "Miracle on Ice" has become a national fairy tale, but the real Cinderella story is even more remarkable. It is a legacy of hope, hard work, and homegrown triumph. It is a chronicle of everyday heroes who just wanted to play hockey happily ever after. It is still unbelievable.
The Boys of Winter is an evocative account of the improbable American adventure in Lake Placid, New York. Drawing on hundreds of hours of interviews, Wayne Coffey explores the untold stories of the US upstarts, their Soviet opponents, and the forces that brought them together.
    Critic Reviews:

great story but not the right narrator
the overall story is great. loved hearing about the background of the players and coaches, but the some of the game's narration was a bit too detailed. I don't think that this was the right narrator for this story. something about his voice ... Just didn't match my expectation for a hockey story.
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD... THE AMERICANS WIN
What made the experience of listening to The Boys of Winter the most enjoyable?
This event combined with a phenomenal sophomore NHL season by a guy named Wayne Gretzky helped turn me into a huge hockey fan. I thought I knew this whole story by heart. i was wrong. There was so much I didn't know. I knew the players by number, position, and school, but I never knew the men behind the uniforms. This book gives great insight into them by using a very clever framing device. it will appeal to both the casual fan who may not have been around to experience the "miracle" and to the sports know-it-all.
What did you like best about this story?
The storytelling was really well done. It sounds corny, but I actually got chills as the final seconds of the game ticked off.
Have you listened to any of Kirby Heybornes other performances before? How does this one compare?
Heyborne did a pretty good job, but after only a few minutes of listening it became very evident to me that he knows very little about hockey. He paces well and gives the text a lot of flair, but each time he said "blue line" as two separate words I would lose my mind. Hulk would have smashed his iPod.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It makes me smile. It's just a wonderful story about a bunch of college kids who were able to defeat the greatest team in the world.
    Any additional comments?
Good story for a hockey family to listen to on a long trip.

    Publisher's Summary:
In examining one of the defining events of the twentieth century, Doris L. Bergen situates the Holocaust in its historical, political, social, cultural, and military contexts. Unlike many other treatments of the Holocaust, this revised, third edition discusses not only the persecution of the Jews, but also other segments of society victimized by the Nazis: Roma, homosexuals, Poles, Soviet POWs, the disabled, and other groups deemed undesirable. In clear and eloquent prose, Bergen explores the two interconnected goals that drove the Nazi German program of conquest and genocide - purification of the so-called Aryan race and expansion of its living space - and discusses how these goals affected the course of World War II. Including firsthand accounts from perpetrators, victims, and eyewitnesses, her book is immediate and human.

Agency - the capacity or state of exerting power
    Any additional comments?
I was looking for a comprehensive history of The Holocaust, and Goodreads pointed me toward Timothy Snyder. I read Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin and Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning.... Still, I needed something more. Doris Bergen's book was exactly what I didn't know I needed.
Her history is concise, as titularly promised, but also complete. In the first chapter, she addresses not just the question of why did World War II happen but also the often forgotten question of "Why the Jews?" as the author puts it. She lay to rest many of my preconceived notions and mythology that I'd embraced as "cultural literacy."
Bergen also resists laying the entire Holocaust at the feet of one man, nor does she hold entire nations responsible. Specifically and deliberately, the author indicts those who actively and passively created and perpetuated mass murder.
Jarring and brutal, Bergen's language consistently used the voice of agency in describing the events of the Holocaust. Nobody "died" in the concentration camps described in War and Genocide; they were murdered by starvation, work, disease, gas, torture, suffocation (buried alive), gunshot, hanging, beating, or some other depravity that had a specific perpetrator and victim.
And Bergen does not allow either to be a faceless entity in the shadows of history. Through well-developed anecdotes, she brings the murderer and the murdered out of the darkness and names them. Her scorn or respect has an individuality that, for me, echoed the voice of God that each will surely hear on judgement day. The author never descends into collective nouns that tend to lull the reader into a complacency; instead you get the names and descriptions. You understand the person, the people, the Humanitynot the Six Million, the Jews, the Gypsies, the Gays, the Jehovahs Witnesses, the Poles, the dead.
Likewise, the author notes that everyone who survived the Holocaust was saved by someone.

Till's attackers were never convicted, but his lynching became one of the most notorious hate crimes in American history. It launched protests across the country, helped the NAACP gain thousands of members, and inspired famous activists like Rosa Parks to stand up and fight for equal rights for the first time. Part detective story, part political history, Tyson revises the history of the Till case using a wide range of new sources, including the only interview ever given by Carolyn Bryant. In a time where discussions of race are once again coming to the fore, Tyson redefines this crucial moment in civil rights history.

This is one of the worst incidents of Southern Justice in our nations history. The victim was a fourteen-year-old black boy from Chicago who was visiting a relative in Mississippi. The boy who had polio when younger was accused of provoking a white woman, Carolyn Bryant, with a wolf whistle and flirtation. Her husband, Roy Brant and her half -brother, J. W. Milan, then beat-up and lynched the boy.
Many books have been written about this case. What sets Tysons book apart is the broad view he used to examine the lynching. Tyson does an excellent job with the courtroom scenes. The book is well written and meticulously researched. Tyson examined the records including the trial transcripts and interviews of most of the people involved, including a rare interview with the late Carolyn Bryant. Apparently, Carolyn Bryant wrote her memoir. The manuscript and related papers have been sealed until 2038. The author delves into the social and economic forces that drove Roy Bryant and J. W. Milan to kill Till. Tyson then ties up the case to include the ongoing problems of inequality of justice for blacks today. Tyson is a historian at Duke University so the book is more academic than many books written on the subject.
The book is just over eight and a half hours long. Rhett S. Price does a good job narrating the book. Price is an actor and audiobook narrator.

A very important & sad bit of history. Narrator mispronounced Mamie. It is pronounced May-me.

Good look at the beginnings of the civil rights movement! ET'S murder cause many in the north to see the south in a new light. great historical read.
    Gripping Tale and Story.
Rhett S price did a terrific job narrating the story; he really made it come to life.
    Excellent overall
The overall research was awesome. This case was heartbreaking when I learned about it as a child and remains heartbreaking. I loved how the author saw it's correlation to BLM. This story made me cry for the countless Emmet Tills and Trayvon Martins but the narrator was lacking. His mispronunciation of Mamie Till's name was horrible. Instead of Mamie he called her Mammy. But the actual text was so powerful I listened anyway.
