The Confederates had lost control of several important states throughout 1862, and after New Orleans was taken by the Union, the North controlled almost all of the Mississippi River, which Confederate general James Longstreet called "the lungs of the Confederacy." By taking control of that vital river, the North would virtually cut the Confederacy in two, putting the South in a dire situation.

The only domino left to fall was the stronghold of Vicksburg, and both sides knew it. The Union Army of the Tennessee, led by Ulysses S. Grant, would spend months trying to force John Pemberton's Confederate army to surrender. Grant eventually succeeded on July 4, 1863, but since it came a day after the climactic finish of the Battle of Gettysburg, Vicksburg was (and still is) frequently overlooked as one of the turning points of the Civil War. In fact, had the Confederate's military leadership listened to Longstreet, who advocated detaching soldiers from Lee's army to head west and help the Confederates deal with Grant or Rosecrans in that theater, the Battle of Gettysburg might never have happened.

While many read about the siege of Vicksburg in the summer of 1863, as well as the desperate straits the Confederate soldiers and Vicksburg residents found themselves in, Grant's initial attempts to advance towards Vicksburg met with several miserable failures, and it took several months just to get to the point where the Union forces could start a siege. First, Grant's supply base at Holly Springs was captured, and then an assault launched by Union General Sherman at Chickasaw Bayou was easily repulsed by Confederate forces, with serious Union casualties resulting. Grant then attempted to have his men build canals north and west of the city to facilitate transportation, which included grueling work and disease in the bayous.

On April 30, 1863, Grant finally launched the successful campaign against Vicksburg, marching down the western side of the Mississippi River while the navy covered his movements. Realizing Vicksburg was the objective, the Confederate forces under the command of Pemberton gathered in that vicinity, but instead of going directly for Vicksburg, Grant took the state capital of Jackson instead, effectively isolating Vicksburg. His forces won a couple of battles outside Vicksburg at Champion Hill and Big Black River, forcing Pemberton's men into Vicksburg and completely enveloping it. When two frontal assaults were easily repulsed, Grant and his men settled into a nearly two month long siege that ultimately won the campaign. It was the largest troop surrender during the entire Civil War, and Vicksburg's residents were so embittered that popular folklore maintained Vicksburg didn't celebrate Independence Day for a generation.

This book is just short summaries of Nevada locations and some people. Very little detail, most from already very often published articles. Very disappointed because I was referred to this book for a specific topic; Metropolis Nevada and there was no mention of that historical city at all. Sorry I bought it

A Little Editing Would Go a Long Way

This book presents interesting little snippets of Nevada history - nothing so grandiose as the state's history, but rather snapshots of towns, individuals, and natural features. And really, that's more intruiging.

However, this book suffers greatly from a lack of editing. Numerous typographical errors mar the flow of the story, and some of the text just needs to be tightened. In one case, the sentence "State statues forbade the Chinese from owning property," is followed two short paragraphs later by "The Chinese were prohibited by state statute from owning property." (page 115)

A good read, and one that can be taken in small bites, but in dire need of a good editor.

Fascinating forgotten history

Despite being a story about a fascinating, largely unknown event in U.S. history, this book was unnecessarily difficult to read because of the number of direct quotations.

I was disappointed in the lack of analysis that the Federalists were willing to follow the will of the people. Most revolutions come apart when the new establishment faces the loss of power. The united States passed that test.

Missed Opportunity

This book really tells 2 different stories. The central theme of the book is the story of the surprisingly tumultuous election of 1800. This part of the book is fascinating and interesting. Talk about "Dirty Tricks"!!! Talk about scathing and vicious personal attacks!!! Important issues were ignored in favor of blistering personal attacks.

This is superfluous at best. The writer needs an editor!

She needs a course in the English Language, English Grammar, sentence structure and organization.

My guess, she had one of her school reports printed by a Vanity Press

Very informative which is short but with complete thought.

The most well known and powerful men in American history are all here. Each one of them was justified in this book and has well explained how they become famous and what they really did for their country. This book would really be helpful for history students or for those who wanted to learn everything about them in just for a few minutes.

Considerable gathering of resources was needed to compile this book, as well as research to support or debunk those resources. It was both enlightening and disheartening to see how many of the truthful eyewitnesses could forget or confuse their recollections of the events. Also added to muddy the waters, was the aggravating propensity of Santa Anna and some of his staff to change the numbers of the defenders killed and the numbers of their own men killed. We will never get an exact accounting of the siege of the Alamo whether good or bad. What is apparent is the determination and courage of most of those defenders to fight against overwhelming odds. To be sure, many stayed initially because Travis was sure that much help was on the way. Once the Alamo was surrounded by thousands of troops, and Santa Anna declared that no quarter be given, escape and surrender became just about impossible. Consequently, the defenders fought bravely and as hard as they could given the weapons of the time. The last fighting within the long barracks and the chapel itself was agreed by those who recalled it as incredibly savage, bloody, loud, and confused. The excitement and confusion through the thick smoke caused many Mexican soldiers to wound and kill some of their own accidentally. The burning of the corpses of the defenders was looked upon as a grisly scene by soldiers and civilians alike. Another interesting scenario was that so many dead Mexican soldiers were eventually thrown into the flooded San Antonio river by the order of the city Alcalde, Ruiz. Santa Anna had ordered his dead buried in the city cemetery as he soon left San Antonio. However, there were so many bodies and putrification being an immediate problem, they threw many of them into the fast moving waters. Bodies log jammed at some bends in the small river, and they had to eventually be worked loose to continue their floating. This event was witnessed and recalled by more than one person. I was born and raised in San Antonio and have always been familiar with most of the stories in this book, but not all of them. I recently found out that the lookout in the San Fernando church who spotted Santa Anna's army and who rang the bell, was Daniel William Cloud, and he is an ancestor of mine, but I am not sure as to cousin, uncle, etc. Lon Tinkle's book "13 Days to Glory" mentions Daniel William Cloud on the first page and several pages afterwards. I was amused when reading Seguin's reference to the bell tower lookout as a "reliable man" but his "name escaped" him at the moment of recall. I enjoyed reading this book, but I wish the author had revealed the reliability of each source before we commenced to read them.

In the wake of the riot, New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller, who had ordered the rebellion put down, accused the prisoners of committing "the cold-blood killings they had threatened from the outset," but others saw it from a far different perspective.

While The New York Times characterized it in a more evenhanded fashion and bemoaned the "mass deaths that four days of taut negotiations had sought to avert," the prisoners were often portrayed as taking a heroic and righteous stand against the system. Perhaps the most famous representation of the riot was its commemoration in John Lennon's "Attica State," during which he sang, "We're all mates with Attica State."
