Eye Opener

I love this book! I love her passion, care, and devotion to her readers. I laughed when she laughed and was steaming mad when she was angry, too. I rooted for Guylay the whole time because she put forth a true eye opener of a book for those of us wanting to become career writers or those seeking a hobby to write.

This book answered many unanswered questions I had when I read The Lean Startup (Eric Ries) and Change By Design (Tim Brown). Tenny Pinheiro's approach and analysis pointed out something that I felt so many times in the ways I used to work with my projects: Scientific Method is far from being the best way to understand people and their needs: what makes them happy, what's annoying to them, and what they really need; and Design Thinking alone is too distant from Real World Problems.

The best part is that after reading this book, I didn't feel like I'd have to forget everything I've learned so far. Instead, I'm a lot more inclined to use everything in a more suitable way, rather than just "following blindly a famous author".

The opening quote from Miyamoto Musashi's Dokkd (The Way of the Lonely Pilgrim) is the essence of the book. A brilliant way to begin!

Misunderstandings over Misunderstandings

It seems the "book" (quite short to call it such) has been written in haste and anger.

I get the impression that Mr. Pinheiro is a little upset about the fact, that someone from outside (the software-development-, e-entrepreneurship-world) of his profession (the design-world) grabs a good share of "his" market.

Don't get me wrong. There is some (maybe even a lot of) truth (imo) in the claims the author makes about the "Lean Startup" book by Eric Ries.

I think Pinheiro didn't get the focus of the "Lean Startup" book right (i assume that the extended applications were not intended by the author; Lean UX and stuff): there is a start-up, that already knows what problems it wants to solve - nobody would found a business AND then think about what that business actually and generally should do - so that "early experiments" part, that Pinheiro constantly put's into focus (in the last chapters at least) IS ALREADY DONE. Otherwise there wouldn't be a business.

Furthermore I don't like the way the author constantly points towards the misinterpretations and misunderstandings of Ries towards certain aspects of the "design-world" - which certainly wasn't the focus. One could easily accuse Pinheiro not to grasp the concept's of lean software development as a response.

Some of the parts that Pinheiro cites are clipped in a way to prove his point and let Ries sound wrong and "dogmatic". The whole first chapter is based on the assumption that Ries promotes Taylorism and seeing individuals as "interchangeable cogs" in the system, which is wrong.

This book does a good job of introducing concepts and terminology. It is a good beginning or intro book. It might sound trivial but if you don't know the language you are not going to go far. A good all around introduction and realist expectations.

A Must read for Anyone Interested in Marketing, Advertising, and Communication!

I have been using social media for a long time. I have multiple Twitter and Facebook accounts each geared toward a part of my professional and personal life. I have a Twitter account for my political project, my publishing company, and one to promote my writing career. I thought I had great communication skills and was doing my best to effectively gel with my targeted demographics.

Well, after reading "Conversations In Communication," I was indeed surprised by what I did not know about branding, marketing, and professional communication in general. Mr. Weinholtz has put together a fantastic collection of well researched and easy to understand essays that focus on effective communication through advertising, social media, and marketing. I definitely have learned a lot from this short and intellectually engaging book. A top o' the hat to Weinholtz for the fantastic job!

EBay business and it is easy to feel over-whelmed , but this book breaks everything down step by step. I would like to have had more information on the accounting process beyond a very rudimentary spreadsheet, but even so , there is so much useful information in this book that I would highly recommend it.Personally, I've been interested in trying to sell on eBay for quite some time, but I still haven't gotten to it yet. This is a great guide for beginners with zero knowledge.
