Yes, but it's long.

Romantic and Refreshing! Beautifully Narrated

If you could sum up Venus in three words, what would they be?

Compelling, Romantic, Complex.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Polly. She was intelligent and insightful. I loved her passion and resilience. Her transformation was very believable and the direction of her actions/reactions all made sense while never losing grip of the romantic fantasy.

Have you listened to any of Gemma Dawsons other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes! She is a wonderful narrator. This is a more subtle example of her work, I listened to one of the other 'v' books before this one (out of the order of sequence, which didn't make a difference as the stories are completely independent from on another in this series) and her character voices were bigger and bolder, this is the first book in the series so I imagine they got better and better as she narrated them all. Her voice has a pleasant musicality to it, and a beautiful tone. I always seek out and enjoy her performances.

Mispronounciations abound!

The frustration of listening to a fabulous narrator mispronounce so many words in such a ridiculous way is almost funny! It felt at times as if a poor student read aloud and didn't know the words! How can such a narrator not even know how to say 'chemise....(it isn't chemist without a clear T , after all..) Its absurd! Does no one Edit? Verify? Proof? C'mon.... Who chooses narrators without knowing they can't Pronounce Common words?? Do they interviww them? Even a script to read to confirm the ability of the narrator before hiring could avoid this? Grrrrr.....

I do like Gemma's voice, delivery, cadence, male vs female voices, etc...but this time it was....foolish?... Ugh!

Ignoring the one complaint I have to applaud Jane Feathers writing, as usual. The Pygmalion-esque theme was interesting in a weird way.

An excellent read (listen)

A well-crafted, chatty novel which intricately mixes fact and fiction. Mr. Warner is gifted in character development and description. His protagonist is an interesting character who is not altogether likeable but for whom the reader will have reason for admiration.

This will be particularly interesting to those who are familiar with the Cold War era.

The narration is perfect!

The Cold War: Comedy/Tragedy

This is quite an extraordinary spy novel. Winston Bates is sort of a brilliant Forrest Gump, a man with a talent not only for finding himself at the center of every failed Cold War clandestine operation from Suez to Iran Contra but for inadvertently causing some of them. He knows every high level player in US intelligence. He trades in gossip and the funny thing is, nobody in Washington seems to be able to keep a secret. Bates' photographic memory and his success on the social scene place him in the perfect places to gather information. At every turn, he tries to do the right thing but for 40 years he has no idea why he is spying or what he is supposed to accomplish. Peter Warner's Winston Bates manages to capture the supreme absurdity that I remember so vividly from the Cold War.

BTW, a lot of this novel is realized in conversations.

The plot primarily concerns a young woman, Clarissa Harlowe, who falls for a wealthy and handsome smuggler with a heart of gold, but there are many misunderstandings and twists along the way.

respectably Heyer-like with added touches

If you like to relax or treat a head cold with a Heyer-like escape, you know how rare such reads are. I've given up trying authors who are supposed to Heyer-like; however, I really needed a break from reality when I saw this among Audible's new releases. This is the best-of-its-classification I've come across in many listens: "sweet" without being saccharine or too silly, well-written, and well-narrated. Although it has an expected plot and Regency-a-la-Heyer world - like Heyer, it's just very diverting and witty.

I was always uneasy with the undertones of family violence/threat of violence in many Heyers and Heyer-homages (Heroes who feel like "boxing ears" or "shaking" women); this novel is refreshingly free from such patterns. And the author manages to avoid remixing Heyer's overused cliches while including mixing reader favourites (and nods to Austen). I hope Smith has more like these! I am tempted to rate as five starts, just because it can't be easy to strike the right balance in these novels, and attempts at old fashioned Regencies are getting rarer, even with the explosion of contemporary stories cloaked in Regency clothes (often losing even the clothes).

A pleasant listen - regency soap opera

This book is quite nice to listen to if you're in the mood for light fiction. The narrator came to life when taking on the voices of the evil Balderson sisters, but failed to engage my interest in the principal characters. The story is very much in the style of Georgette Heyer, with a host of minor characters.

Good story, terrible narration

The story is quite sweet, but rather spoiled by bad reading. The narration picked up somewhat by thecend, but I would recommend to read it in print.

No - juvenile story and poor narration.

The title sounded inviting and the reviews were good!? However, the writing is more on the level of a fifth grader's fun and action-filled novel. The narration sounds like a fake British accent. Could not get past the first few chapters. The book seemed too silly to continue.

A Robin Hood Tale

Will in Scarlet is a Robin Hood story, but instead of focusing on Robin, this one focuses on Will Scarlet. Itâs an interesting twist on the typical stories. I found that I was totally drawn into the story. The character development was excellent. I highly recommend reading this book!

Great book for almost any age

A very good read. Suitable for as young as 4th/5th grade (maybe just a tad graphic for very little ones) but also entertaining for the adults in the family. There is indication that this might just be the first in a series!

fabulous tale!

Love the point of view of Will Scarlett and Much. Matt Cody knows how to tell a good story. It was hard to put the book down and I wanted more. Will someone make this into a movie and then a series, please?!

I loved Kolpan's earlier book, ETTAEtta: A Novel(the woman with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid). He tells a rollicking story. I would have found this one too rollicking to be believed except that it is based on a true story. Two Eastern European Jews immigrate to Philadelphia. One follows his brother in to the field of magic and both become American and European sensations. Their tricks would amaze and baffle modern audiences. The other goes to Omaha. Kidnapped by the Ponca tribe, he will use his singular ability to learn languages and dialects to become the chief's son and to mingle with European hoi polloi. Kolpan does not romanticize the warts and dangers of the post-Civil War West. He makes it matter by involving us in the lives of the characters. The massacre at Chadron Nebraska (where my family had a ranch) was a crucial turning point in the treatment of Native Americans. Now that cowboys are coming back in to cinematic fashion, this is a perfect summer read.

Good narration, boring story

The narrator was very good, but I just couldn't stay interested in the story. There were a lot of side scenes that didn't take the plot anywhere. Then there would be one that was pretty interesting and add to the story. I kept thinking the story would get better because the summary sounded interesting, but it never went anywhere and the conclusion was disappointing.

Well-crafted story

A love story set in the hustle-buslle of the shipyards during the frenzied home front of World War II. The author brings home the attitudes and the flavor of the times in her story about the people of Orange, Texas, as they live and love during the biggest thing that happened there. It shows how the War affected people and how it changed their lives.

Another great book!

Just finished the book and, wow, what a story! I loved the way Bea, with her new toughness, took charge at the end.

I enjoyed the memories of WW II Orange. I was there at the time and Sylvia Dickey Smith got not just the facts right, but the spirit as well.

A word about Percy: Never in any book, stage show, picture show, or narrative from the next bar stool has any infant in a story became just as alive for me as the rest of the cast.

A War of Her Own by Sylvia Dickey Smith is a novel set during World War II in the summer of 1943 in Orange, Texas. My father was one of the workers at the wartime shipyard and we still live in Orange. I Couldn't put this book down it brought back a lot of memory. This is a great book.

Sorry to disagree with all the other reviews, but: ohh nooo.

I seldom write reviews, but I would have appreciated it if some other reviewers had mentioned the foul language and situation which occurs just after the story starts. As I'm unable to get samples of kindle books on my ipad, I wasn't aware of the content until purchasing and downloading this. I couldn't make it past page 4. Obviously, I can't judge the rest of the book, as it was just too gross, I don't know, maybe it's as good as the other reviews say, but not worth it for me.

I won't include any spoilers, but if you are disgusted by outhouse language (literally), I'd pass this one by. I won't even go into the even more offensive situation at the beginning, but it was enough for me to ask for a refund, which I have never done.

Great book

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I have never heard anything from this author before but after reading the other reviews I tried the book. I listened to the whole book in one day because I just couldn't wait to hear what happened.

Great story

This is my second time reading this series. This time I am doing the audio version and I'm disappointed in the choice of reader, her voice is not appropriate for this story. The voice is too child like. The story requires a more adult female voice. So my suggestion is to read and not get the audio version.

Interesting version of Pride and Prejudice

Would you consider the audio edition of He Taught Me to Hope: Darcy and the Young Knight's Quest to be better than the print version?

Yes, because this narrator gives life to the characters.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Elizabeth is a warm-hearted woman with hopes and dreams despite having a family of uncaring nitwits. Her son, Ben, is a marginally lonely boy who needs male company and attaches himself to Mr. Darcy, whom he has interchanged with King Arthur. For his part, Darcy goes along with the fantasy, but then things get complicated.

Have you listened to any of Pearl Hewitts other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. This narration was truly delightful in that she clearly differentiated characters and there was no theatrical melodrama, but a sensitive rendition of the author's work.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Be careful what you wish for.

Characters should not have been revised

Although I enjoyed the story, it was painful when several of Austen's characters were rewritten. For example, Mr Bennet and Jane Bennet. I could not accept that Mr Bennet would support Jeffrey Collins over Elizabeth or that Jane would accept Jeffrey Collin's view of Elizabeth without question. These issues damaged an otherwise pleasant reading experience.

Predictable

Ben is mostly annoying. I'm not sure I agree with the author's characterization of Mr. Bennett but it was nice not to have much of the Bennett family in the book.

This is a great book written by P.O. Dixon and narrated by Pearl Hewitt. This book can be listened to in one sitting if you have the time, once I started listening to it I didnt want to put it down until the end. This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. This book will keep you reading long into the night. This was such a great read and full of surprises.

The narrator Pearl Hewitt. did a great job with this book. She did a great job with the different voices of each character in this book. It was very easy to listen to in one sitting and I didnt want to stop listening until the end.

If you are looking for a great book with great characters then you need to listen to this book. I am looking forward to listening to the next book by this author and narrator.

narration spoilt the story

Would you be willing to try another one of Robert Samss performances?

No, I presume he was chosen because of being able to pronaunce the Japanese words (well for a non japanese , he sounded like he could ) His narration was stilted . choppy and seemed poorly prepaired for what he was about to read. he kept stopping midsentance . for me it really ruined the whole experience . I was shocked to learn at the end of the book that it was Audible that had produced it, I would have expected a much better performance from a company that should understand the narration can make or break a good book.

liked the story , as stated above , it was completely ruined by bad narration , I'm thinking of returning this one , something I very rarely do.
