    Title: Dancing in the Streets
Subtitle: A History of Collective Joy
    Author: Barbara Ehrenreich
    Narrator: Pam Ward
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-10-07
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 57 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Ehrenreich uncovers the origins of communal celebration in human biology and culture, showing that such mass festivities have been indigenous to the West since the ancient Greeks. Though suppressed by elites who fear the undermining of social hierarchies, outbreaks of group revelry still persist, Ehrenreich shows, pointing to the 1960s rock-and-roll rebellion and the more recent "carnivalization" of sports.
Original, exhilarating, and deeply optimistic, Dancing in the Streets shows that we are innately social beings, impelled to share our joy and thereby envision a peaceable future.
    Critic Reviews:
"A serious look at communal celebrations, well documented and presented with assurance and flair." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Ehrenreich writes with grace and clarity in a fascinating, wide-ranging, and generous account." (Publishers Weekly)

    Such an important, unique work
The beginning starts out a little slower, but WELL worth waiting it out as it moves forward chronologically....just clearly represents a serious, creative level of research and shines a light and what amounts to be a sad reality about the lack of meaningful, collective opportunities to just enjoy life with those around us (through food, drink, music, even dancing).
I hope it helps drive a real push for more of exactly those things, and i know myself that i want to do anything i can, even in small ways, to push all of that.
    Poor
Very shoddy historical work in this book. So many glaring logical fallacies and inaccuracies that I had to stop mid way...
    Eye Opening
Great book. Very informative about dance and music across cultures. I could see the effects it has had on my life and many of those around me. This book has inspired me to make changes that are fun and will last four generations to come.
    Not for celebration
The tone of the audio was surprisingly condescending. I was expecting at least neutral. Content was accurate though.
    Romp through civilization
A good read for those interested in anthropology, evolution and the forces such as hierarchies which have attempted to mute the irrepressible human instinct for collective joy.

Title: Lincoln and Chief Justice Taney
Subtitle: Slavery, Secession, and the President's War Powers
    Author: James F. Simon
    Narrator: Richard Allen
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-17-06
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 46 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Lincoln and Taney's bitter disagreements began with Taney's Dred Scott opinion in 1857, when the chief justice declared that the Constitution did not grant the black man any rights that the white man was bound to honor. Lincoln attacked the opinion as a warped judicial interpretation of the Framers' intent and accused Taney of being a member of a pro-slavery national conspiracy.
In his first inaugural address, Lincoln insisted that the South had no legal right to secede. Taney, who administered the oath of office to Lincoln, believed that the South's secession was legal and in the best interests of both sections of the country.
Once the war began, Lincoln broadly interpreted his constitutional powers as commander-in-chief to prosecute the war, suspending habeas corpus, censoring the press, and allowing military courts to try civilians for treason. Taney vociferously disagreed, accusing Lincoln of assuming dictatorial powers in violation of the Constitution. Lincoln ignored Taney's protests and exercised his presidential authority fearlessly, determined that he would preserve the Union.
James F. Simon skillfully brings to life this compelling story of the momentous tug-of-war between the president and the chief justice during the worst crisis in the nation's history.
    Critic Reviews:
"Surprisingly taut and gripping....a dramatic, charged narrative." (Publishers Weekly)

    a rehash without much new
Any book about Lincoln or the Civil War, taking whatever angle, is bound to have a good deal of rehash of material many of us already know, even if you are not an inveterate Civil War buff. What makes these kinds of books intriguing is the new perspectives authors can bring to the reader, and on occasion new material as well. This volume does bring some new material to light on Taney in particular, little on Lincoln, and none on the Civil War itself. It does not provide a good legal analysis of the Dred Scott decision, nor other Taney legal/career events prior (or during the War, re: habeas corpus), and does not succeed in the author's promise to thoroughly explore the relationship between Lincoln & Taney (or perhaps it does, there wasn't much of a relationship as a matter of fact).
The reader has a nice voice, but did not do his homework with respect to some terms & some names. He mispronounces place names & last names with irritating frequency, which is unfortunate. It detracts from what is otherwise quite a listenable exposition.
    Poor Chief Justice Taney
How could a jurist be so wrong about the course of history. Chief Justice Taney's use of his office to attempt to derail the inevitable march of history toward the abolition of slavery is truly remarkable. As a consequence, he will forever be regarded, and properly so, as the worst Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. The book provides a scholarly historical insight into the Court's role before and during the Civil War and is well worth reading/listening. One negative is the narrator. One would hope that both the narrator and editior would familiarize themselves with the proper pronunciation of the names of key characters in the narrative. He consistently mispronounced General McClellan's name calling him McCleeeeeland. He also mispronounced General Buell's name referring to him as General Bwell.

    Title: Patriotic Treason
Subtitle: John Brown and the Soul of America
    Author: Evan Carton
    Narrator: Michael Prichard
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 30 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-06-06
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 67 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Vividly re-creating the world in which Brown and his compatriots lived with a combination of scrupulous original research, new perspectives, and a sensitive historical imagination, Patriotic Treason narrates the dramatic life of the first U.S. citizen committed to absolute racial equality. Here are his friendships (Brown lived, worked, ate, and fought alongside African-Americans, in defiance of the culture around him), his family (he turned his 20 children, by two wives, into a dedicated militia), and his ideals (inspired by the Declaration of Independence and the Golden Rule, he collaborated with black leaders such as Frederick Douglass, Martin Delany, and Harriet Tubman to overthrow slavery).
Evan Carton captures the complex, tragic, and provocative story of Brown the committed abolitionist, Brown the tender yet demanding and often absent father and husband, and Brown the radical American patriot who attacked the American state in the name of American principles. Through new research into archives, attention to overlooked family letters, and reinterpretation of documents and events, Carton essentially reveals a missing link in American history.
    Critic Reviews:
    "An intriguing portrait." (Booklist)
    "Absorbing and inspiring." (Publishers Weekly)
"By book's end, readers will be fully persuaded that the author's provocative opening salvo...[is] true....[A] rare humanizing of an icon....Carton...truly excels at portraying the man himself. A dramatic, expertly paced biography of American history's most problematic figure." (Kirkus Reviews)

A Jarring Reminder of Antebellum America
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in American history. John Brown's America comes alive with all of the attitudes to which we now find it difficult to relate: the political struggle over "slave state" vs. "free state" as the nation expands West, the Fugitive Slave Act, and the Dred Scott decision. If you're a little fuzzy on "bloody Kansas" and what that was all about, this book will make sense of it. You will come away with an appreciation for the dilemma that moral men faced in the 1850s, why John Brown made a remarkable sacrifice, and how remarkable it truly was.
Whether you have read a lot of Civil War history, or very little, this is a compelling read.
    A conflicted would-be hero
This is the second book about John Brown I've listened to; the first was Tony Horwitz's "Midnight Rising." Horwitz does a better job setting the story in its broader context, but Carton does a better job capturing the essence of Brown himself. It's a compelling and surprising listen. Whatever you think of Brown's failed guerrilla action, there was something entrancing about the man himself and his total commitment to racial equality. (Having grown up in the South myself, I feel pretty comfortable saying that there's no way the South would have ever given up slavery except at gunpoint; so Brown may have been premature or even incompetent, but he was trying to do what he knew had to be done eventually.) Either book would provide a useful introduction to the subject. I found this one more interesting and more sympathetic.
    Detailed Portrait
This book was a dazzling, detailed portrait of a poorly understood and interesting character of American History.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Constitution of the United States created a nation with a strong centralized government. In 1791, the Constitution was adjusted to include 10 amendments, commonly referred to as the Bill of Rights. These were guarantees of individual liberty upon which critics of the Constitution had insisted.
Changing times raise changing questions. What of black rights, the right of former slaves to vote? And do women not share in that privilege? How many terms should a president serve? These and other issues were resolved through additional amendments to the Constitution. Throughout America's history, the Constitution has remained a living document. Here, each of the 26 amendments is presented in the unique historical context that gave it birth.

    Publisher's Summary:
On October 19, 1781, Lord Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown. The 13 colonies had won the war. The colonies would now become the United States of America; but their conflicts with Britain were not over. Together, the 13 colonies set out to create something new under the sun: a government that derived its just authority from the consent of the governed.
To understand this unparalleled event, it is necessary to explore the character and ideas of the 18th Century Americans. Many founding fathers believed the real American Revolution was not war with Britain, but the revolution in ideas that preceded and caused the war. From 1760 to 1775, in the course of 15 years, many Americans were transformed from loyal subjects into rebels against Britain. What vision caused them to rebel? How faithfully did they follow it?
    Members Reviews:
    Not quite what I expected.
This has almost zero history of the actual war that borne the revolution. Sure the stage for revolution was set but it would be for naught if not for the mighty warriors.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 92 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
To argue his case, he marshals a trove of often chilling evidence. He recounts how "the Building" and its denizens achieved what Eisenhower called "a disastrous rise of misplaced power" from the unprecedented aerial bombing of Germany and Japan during World War II to the "shock and awe" of Iraq. He charts the colossal U.S. nuclear buildup, which far outpaced that of the USSR and has outlived it. He reveals how consistently the Building has found new enemies just as old threats and funding evaporate. He demonstrates how Pentagon policy brought about U.S. indifference to an epidemic of genocide during the 1990s. And he shows how the forces that attacked the Pentagon on 9/11 were set in motion exactly 60 years earlier, on September 11, 1941, when ground was broken for the house of war.
Carroll draws on rich personal experience (his father was a top Pentagon official for more than 20 years) as well as exhaustive research and extensive interviews with Washington insiders, from Robert McNamara to John McCain to William Cohen to John Kerry. The result is a grand yet intimate work of history, unashamedly polemical and personal but unerringly factual.
    Critic Reviews:
"An aggressively compelling history." (Publishers Weekly)
"Certain to be one of the most-talked-about nonfiction books of the season." (Booklist)

    A Great Book
I enjoyed the House of War very much. It is certainly a long listen, but it managed to keep my interest throughout.
Of course, while the ideas contained within represent a leftist viewpoint (as the author readily admits), his insight into Truman's decision to bomb Japan and the concept of "dehousing" industrial workers is really worth a listen.
I think his view of the Cold War is a bit one sided. He seems to suggest that all Soviet behaviour was based reactions to American paranoia and ignorance.
Overall, this is a well researched, well presented book.
    Powerful and Fascinating
James Carroll will make a lot of people uncomfortable with this book. His portrait of the Pentagon is not flattering. However, the scope of the story is wide, thorough and told from a unique perspective; that of a boy growing up in a military family that was intimately connected to America's military establishment. Carroll's portrait of Curtis Lemay is revealing and surprisingly sympathetic. To me, this is one of the strengths of the book; the Pentagon is shown as a collection of people, torn by myriad forces and loyalties. As a Canadian, I've always been curious about the enormous impact that mandatory military service has had on many generations of Americans. Despite my liberal leanings and a mistrust of things military, I've always been impressed by the fierce loyalty that our American friends display towards their troops. This book beautifully describes the military culture, warts and all. You could build an American history course around this book.
    Must Read History
As a Marine Officer, Carroll has opened my mind to new ways of viewing Military History! In an effort to understand our current conflicts, Ive listened to and or read at least 10 books on 911 and the War on Terror from many points of view. House of War is simply the BEST,Period.

    The experiment went terribly wrong.
What happened during the seven months Tiger Force descended into the abyss is the stuff of nightmares. Their crimes were uncountable, their madness beyond imagination, so much so that for almost four decades, the story of Tiger Force was covered up under orders that stretched all the way to the White House. Records were scrubbed, documents were destroyed, men were told to say nothing.
But one person didn't follow orders. The product of years of investigative reporting, interviews around the world, and the discovery of an astonishing array of classified information, Tiger Force is a masterpiece of journalism. Winners of the Pulitzer Prize for their Tiger Force reporting, Michael Sallah and Mitch Weiss have uncovered the last great secret of the Vietnam War.
    Critic Reviews:
"In the best tradition of investigative journalism, the authors let the story speak for itself." (Publishers Weekly)

    Amazing story, well told
Reader does a great job covering the story and investigation in an intriguing manner. I heard about this war crime from my Captain's Career Course instructor and was disturbed to see just how bad the massacres were, and how terrible men can be when they are not held accountable for their actions.
    unbelievable
could not stop listening. The reader was remarkable and extremely reliable with each new chapter.
    Skipped
I didn't like that it skipped a few paragraphs when I was reading along with it on kindle. had to keep pausing to read what I missed.
Left Wing Liberal "Journalist" slings mud
Another Left Wing Liberal "Journalist" slings mud on the reputations of good men. The writing is cliché and sterotypical. The Vietnamese villagers are the Innocents and the US Military are bigots who want to kill. This whole book is a snide attack on Col. Lt. Col. David Hackworth, who was the most highly decorated soldier in United States military history having received 24 decorations for heroism in combat from the Distinguished Service Cross to the Army Commendation Medal.
Even as fiction, this is just a poorly written story. I don't recommend that you waste your money on this. However, if you too are a Left Wing Liberal who want to indulge your Hate America tendencies then, this is the book for you.

    Title: The Colony
Subtitle: The Harrowing True Story of the Exiles on Molokai

    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 221 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
In 1866, 12 men and women and one small child were forced aboard a leaky schooner and cast away to a natural prison on the Hawaiian island of Molokai. Two weeks later, a dozen others were exiled, and then 40 more, and then 100 more. Tracked by bounty hunters and torn screaming from their families, the luckless were loaded into shipboard cattle stalls and abandoned in a lawless place where brutality held sway. Many did not have leprosy, and most of those who did were not contagious, yet all were caught in a shared nightmare. The colony had little food, little medicine, and very little hope. Exile continued for more than a century, the longest and deadliest instance of medical segregation in American history. Nearly 9,000 people were banished to the colony, trapped by pounding surf and armed guards and the highest sea cliffs in the world. Twenty-eight live there still.
John Tayman tells the fantastic saga of this horrible and hopeful place, at one time the most famous community in the world, and of the individuals involved. The narrative is peopled by presidents and kings, cruel lawmen and pioneering doctors, and brave souls who literally gave their lives to help. A stunning cast includes the martyred Father Damien, Robert Louis Stevenson, Jack London, Mark Twain, Teddy Roosevelt, John Wayne, and more. The result is a searing tale of survival and bravery, and a testament to the power of faith, compassion, and heroism.
    Editorial Reviews:
Tayman charts not only the life of the colony, but the lives of a veritable cast of characters, both patients and non-patients: there are heroes here in Father Damien and John Early. Tayman also follows the main island and mainland politics that birthed and crippled the colony. And he tracks the progression of leprosy and the science of leprosy, from the Biblical mistranslation that stigmatized it to the microscopes that magnified the germs, and the cure.
Along the way, Tayman introduces us to famous writers who visited Molokai: Mark Twain, Jack London, and Robert Louis Stevenson. These and other first-hand insights make Tayman's account convincing and accurate.
Patrick Lawlor reads well, perfectly matching Tayman's pacing, bringing the despair and the heroism of this account fully to life.
This is a dirty history of our country, of medicine, and of government. But in the end, it was a lesson well learned, one that has helped to avoid the same mistakes with other contagious diseases such as AIDS. Everyone should listen to this book for the very reason this type of history is taught: so that it does not repeat itself.
    Critic Reviews:
"Tayman's crisp, flowing writing and inclusion of personal stories and details make this an utterly engrossing look at a heartbreaking chapter in Hawaiian history." (Booklist) "Drawing on contemporary sources and eyewitness accounts of the still surviving members of the colony, Tayman has created a fitting monument to the strength and character of the castoffs in particular, and human beings as a whole." (Publishers Weekly)

    Interesting
I liked this book quite a bit. Perhaps my positive assessment is bolstered by the fact that I "read" it while on my way to the island of Molokai. Having heard the story prior to gazing down upon that remote peninsula from 2,000 feet above is quite an experience.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Civil War battle waged on September 17, 1862, at Antietam Creek, Maryland, was one of the bloodiest in the nation's history: On this single day, the battle claimed nearly 23,000 casualties. In Landscape Turned Red, the renowned historian Stephen Sears draws on a remarkable cache of diaries, dispatches, and letters to recreate the vivid drama of Antietam as experienced not only by its leaders but also by its soldiers, both Union and Confederate. Combining brilliant military analysis with narrative history of enormous power, Landscape Turned Red is the definitive work on this climactic and bitter struggle.

    Excellent Book
I have read Sears' Gettysburg book and wanted to try another - and was not disappointed. I have read various books as to the battle of Antietam but this is the most comprehensive. Sears has a nice way of providing some background information and detailing events leading up to the battle. Then the details of the ultimate battle make it seem as if you were in the middle of it.
I recommend this for a wide varitey of audiences.
Best Coverage of America's Bloodiest Day
Great book! Sears is knowledgable and fair, but it is really his ability to create an interesting narritive of an event most readers are already largely familiar with that makes "Landscape Turned Red" work so well. In large measure Sears succeeds, because he weaves in interesting quotations from such a wide variety of sources without distracting the story. He quotes Lee and McClellan, but also from unknown officers and men on both sides. Great work!
    Landscape Turned Red
One of the best accounts of the Battle of Antietam that I've ever read. The book is amazingly detailed. It's clear that an incredible amount of research went into the writing of this book, including the most detailed account of the Battle of South Mountain I have yet read. A must read for any true Civil War Buff who is interested in the who, what, when and why of a battle
    Captivating
This superbly written, well narrated book brings clarity to exactly why this battle was the bloodiest in American history. Having an ancestor that died from wounds received during the fighting at the corn field near the 'Dunker Church'; the telling of the tale enabled me to visualize what the battle must have been like for these brave men on both sides. Excellent!
It's been on my shelf for 25 years!
I've owned this book for some time having acquired it many, many years ago. Not being a fan of the Army of the Potomac, I was never compelled to read it until now. I was not disappointed! Written in the early 80's, this is a classic. The unit detail and for both the North and the South is excellent and the quotes form the combatants adds to the flavor of this read. "Little Mac" was a horrible commander! and this book outlines why. I look forward to listening again...Maybe this September 17th!

"Bingham and Gansler have come up with mesmerizing, complex portraits of the participants in a beautifully paced narrative....Impeccable." (Washington Post)
    Members Reviews:
    infuriating
A great reason to hate the legal system.
While the story is obviously one sided, it is hard to imagine a reason that could validate what these woman went through. That is was not resolved until just a few years ago is amazing.
The story of the first class action sexual harassment case in the US is intriguing and will infuriate you as the details of what these woman were subjected to unfolds. They were victimized by coworkers, management, their union, attorneys and even judges. Whatever they won could not begin to repay them for the mental anguish and health issues they suffered.
    A listen worth your time.
Riveting account of some very strong women
Both the book and the narration are very good! This is a riveting story of the troubles encountered by the first women workers in a northern Minnesota mine in the 1970s and 80s. The narration is excellent and the pace of the book is more like a well-done novel than a work of history. I highly recommend.
    Class Action - Powerful, Shocking
This was about the first class action sexual harassment lawsuit and perhaps one of the first sexual harassment cases period brought into the Minnesota courts. Class Action does not in any way offer a quick payoff as it takes more than 15 years from the time Lois Jensen, the lead plaintiff, begins to experience intolerable sexual harassment in the Eveleth Mines of MN and the case ends.
Class Action details the price paid by the women who pursued this case. You may find the language and the graphic depictions somewhat shocking, but this is a true account of what happened in some mines and other workplaces prior to and even after Anita Hill's testimony against Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and Congress and the courts establishing damage awards for sexual harassment.
The narrator does a fine job, but the book repeats itself slightly in a couple of areas.
I chose Class Action because I teach a course in Human Resources Management that includes sexual harassment as part of the curriculum. Having an interest in the subject matter is probably the most important prerequisite for enjoying this book. If you choose Class Action, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
