A great way to look at weight loss
This is a Christian view of weight loss, and as a Christian, I appreciated it. It's well read and very thorough. Sure, a lot of the stuff in here is stuff you've heard before. But, really, if you have heard it and are still buying weight loss books, maybe you need to hear it again and again until it sticks. I know that is the case for me.
    I wasn't expecting a Christian themed book.
Lots of Bible quotes. Not for non believers Christian's. Otherwise good information on weight loss.
They said spirituality, they meant Jesus
What would have made Lose It for Life better?
They tried to give you an unique twist on weight loss. They meant to give you the Alcoholics Anonymous approach to weight loss. I have a great faith in God. But in this case it's if you don't believe in Jesus, you can't loose weight. They didn't say faith in Jesus in the reviews; instead, they dodged the issue by saying "spirituality". To me spirituality is in meditation, prayer and a profound connection with God. Jesus is a part of that. But why lie? Why use the word "spirituality" instead of Jesus. It's because of marketing. I wasn't looking for a sermon for may weight loss. "I'm fat because I'm not putting my faith in Jesus?" This is just another cheep excuse to connect religion with personal problems. I don't believe that the people who wrote this for any other reason than to make money. Why else would they take advantage of my faith and tell me that my weight problems are problems with my connection to Jesus. My weight problems are connected with my love for MacDonalds, Popeye's, and overeating. My faith, my connection with Jesus, is between me and God. Spirituality is a metaphysical issues that goes beyond this book. Shame on them for telling me that my weight problems are because of faith.

    Title: The King Jesus Gospel

    Author: Scot McKnight

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 16 mins

    Publisher: Zondervan
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 80 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Contemporary evangelicals have built a 'salvation culture' but not a 'gospel culture.' Evangelicals have reduced the gospel to the message of personal salvation. This book makes a plea for us to recover the old gospel as that which is still new and still fresh. The book stands on four arguments: that the gospel is defined by the apostles in 1 Corinthians 15 as the completion of the Story of Israel in the saving Story of Jesus; that the gospel is found in the Four Gospels; that the gospel was preached by Jesus; and that the sermons in the Book of Acts are the best example of gospeling in the New Testament. In the Beginning was the Gospel ends with practical suggestions about evangelism and about building a gospel culture.

    The Gospel is About Jesus
In my desire to expand my knowledge (and keep myself entertained), I read a lot of books. In my head, I know that many times I need to ruminate on a book more to really get the point and put into practice what I have heard from it. But too often I just keep reading. After all I have a blog to write.
So I made a goal for myself to re-read one book a month. I suck at meeting goals. I have only re-read 10 in the last 18 months and only 2 this year. But when I re-read, I like to read in a different format. The first time I read King Jesus Gospel I read it on my kindle. This time I listened to the audiobook.
First things, first. I think this is a very important book. I think that the message, that we need to place Jesus as Savior, Lord and Messiah and full-filler of the story of Israel, is vitally important.
I have been reading a bit on the unity of Christ and different streams of Christianity lately and understanding the central component of the gospel is vitally important.
This book seems to be frequently misunderstood. McKnight is not minimizing the need for salvation or the need for good theology or the need for good Christian living. Instead he is arguing that as important as all of those things are, they are implications of the gospel, not themselves the Gospel.
The simplest way for me to explain this is that our salvation does not make Jesus Christ Lord and Savior. Instead, the fact that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior means that we can be saved by his grace and power through his work on the cross and his resurrection and because Christ came to fulfill and complete the story of Israel.
But I do have two thoughts on reading this a second time. First, as important as it is, I think that McKnight needs to expand two parts. First, he wants to tightly connect the Old Testament to the New Testament. Too often we present Christ as absent from the history and action of God with Israel. McKnight talks about the importance of this, but I wish he expanded it more. I get his point, I agree with his point. I still have a hard time communicating his point to others. So I would like more.
In a similar way, I wish he would talk more about the implications for communicating the gospel because of the way he is trying to limit its scope. Some people seem to take McKnights point as meaning we should not share a plan of salvation with anyone. That is not his point. But I do see how a too quick reading of the book might lead you to think that.
In addition to those two areas I would like to see expanded, I thought that there really was not much more that I gained by re-reading it.

    A remarkable audiobook
What made the experience of listening to The Art of Divine Contentment the most enjoyable?
This very old book contains depth of insight that eludes most modern writers. The reader does an excellent job of translating the content to audio. I would strongly encourage people to give this a listen.
There is so much heart healing
There is so much heart healing in this book. What else can be said?
Listen to it as a whole rather than in parts.
Powerful & soul-searching. God used this book!

    Publisher's Summary:
If you think it's just a mysterious, outdated book, think again. It's the Bible Jesus read, used, and loved. The Old Testament is God's biography, the story of his passionate encounters with people. It is also a prequel to the story of Jesus, who came to answer the questions that troubled the ancient writers and still trouble us today. For expressing our deepest longings and voicing the full range of our lives and emotions, the Old Testament has no equal. Join Philip Yancey as he explores these sometimes shocking, often cryptic divine writings. You will come to know God more intimately, anticipate Jesus more fervently, and find a wonderful, wise companion for your faith journey.
    Members Reviews:
Not What I Expected, but good.
I thought it would talk about Quotes and things Jesus got from the OT but it really is just a look at several specific sections of the Old Testament. Good, but misleading.
How to understand God in Old Testament
What made the experience of listening to The Bible Jesus Read the most enjoyable?
The best is the content, the ideas in it. The writer has a lot to say about God in the Old Testament, especially how He relates with His chosen ones: His chosen people. He focus also in how to bear pain and suffering. I liked very much when the writer mentioned the experience of the death of his father-in-law, of how he dealt with all complications of old age and death, always quoting the Old Testament in which he (and we) can relate to, in order to better understand God's Will. This book stays with you, touches you deeply. Jesus read the Old Testament. Read it often. Knew it by heart. From reading this book, I realize that we should read it more often, too, for itself and both towards a better understanding of the New Testament and of Jesus` role in it. This book is a must read and thought provoking. If you like or care about religious issues, you won`t regret having listened to it. Even if you are a non beliver interested in knowing some good book to make you think about the human condition, you should pick this one up, because in spiritual studding there is a lot of knowledge about the humans as well. One cannot understand the divine without understand the human, and the other way around.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Bible Jesus Read?
There are several such memorable moments throughout the whole book, because it is a book that goes direct to seminal points, some of them sprang from decades of reading the Bible and other important books as well, without which one cannot fully understand the Bible. The writer is well read and has given some personal thought to several issues, which makes this book both more informative and more interesting to listen to than the same old ideas of most authors who only repeat what everybody already knows, like the sermons in most churches. There are only a few of writers like that, the ones who writes because they actually have something to say rather than just an itching to appear on print and the dubious fame of being one more writer, among so many, who only repeat, sometimes even without changing the form of the words, what other have said elsewhere, long ago, in a much better way. To write well one has to spend several years getting familiar with the subject matter of what one is going to write, or at least read the great books and practice the art of writing, until writing becomes effortlessly and natural.
