    Publisher's Summary:
Years later, after that unforgettable experience in Afghanistan, he would return to the United States to teach history to future Navy and Marine Corps officers at the Naval Academy. He had been in their position once, and he had put his education to the test. How would he use his own life-changing experience to prepare them?
The Unforgiving Minute is the extraordinary story of one soldier's singular education. From a hilarious plebe's-eye view of the author's West Point experience to the demanding leadership crucible of Ranger School's swamps and mountains, to a two-year whirlwind of scintillating debate, pub crawls, and romance at Oxford, Mullaney's winding path to the battlegrounds of Afghanistan was unique and remarkable.
Despite all his preparation, the hardest questions remained. When the call came to lead his platoon into battle and earn his soldiers' salutes, would he be ready? Was his education sufficient for the unforgiving minutes he'd face?
A fascinating account of an Army captain's unusual path through some of the most legendary seats of learning straight into a brutal fight with Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, The Unforgiving Minute is, above all, an unforgettable portrait of a young soldier grappling with the weight of his hard-earned knowledge while coming to grips with becoming a man.

    The Unforgiving Son
The author never quite gets inside anything, especially himself. Though he has many occasions for probing reflection and compelling observation he is too stuck in student/soldier routines to see much. Even his account of his romance with the woman he married is thick with cliches and thin with insight. The real failure of the book is Mullaney's self-righteous and callous attitude toward his father, who created a family crisis, well after his son's successes, by leaving home for another woman. Though Mullaney Sr. gave his son everything and no doubt stayed in a loveless marriage many years for the sake of his children, the son can only respond by riding his high horse and congratulating himself on his moral superiority. (All of a sudden the son takes an interest in his mother who is barely mentioned for three-quarters of the book.) I found this whole dimension of the book strangely unselfconscious for an autobiography.
    Real
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Craig Mullaney shares his story with candid honesty. My heart wept with his as he described in refreshing detail the pain of losing a fellow soldier. Thanks to Mullaney's accounts, I can't help but to have a stronger sense of empathy for those men and women who lay down their lives for our freedom.
    Nicely Done!
I found this very interesting without it being totally gung ho or overly jingoistic as other similar stories I've read. Craig gives a nice insight into the blending of a military life with an academic bent to it. It gave me a view that I haven't really appreciated before. Good story but I wanted more at the end. I'm sure his story will continue.

National Book Critics Circle Award, Biography/Autobiography, 1999
John Forbes Nash, Jr., a prodigy and legend by the age of 30, dazzled the mathematical world by solving a series of deep problems deemed "impossible" by other mathematicians.
But at the height of his fame, Nash suffered a catastrophic mental breakdown and began a harrowing descent into insanity, resigning his post at MIT, slipping into a series of bizarre delusions, and eventually becoming a dreamy, ghostlike figure at Princeton, scrawling numerological messages on blackboards. He was all but forgotten by the outside world - until, remarkably, he emerged from his madness to win the Nobel Prize.
A true drama, A Beautiful Mind is also a fascinating look at the extraordinary and fragile nature of genius.
    Critic Reviews:
"A Beautiful Mind tells a moving story and offers a remarkable look into the arcane world of mathematics and the tragedy of madness." (
New York Times Book Review)"Nasar tells a story of triumph, tragedy, and enduring love." (

    Informative not entertaining
This book is nothing like the movie. The movie skipped everything that would make you dislike John Nash and that is a lot. Nash was an A##hole. Yet the book is more true to life. My wife is a coach to the math team from our state and she will tell you that many geniuses are similar to Nash, mostly unsociable. Of course that is because our society puts down overachievers. In school it is not cool to be the smart kid. If you liked Einstein by Walter Isaacson, then you will like this book. There is a lot in here not only about Nash, but also about the geniuses he was around. There is also a lot in here about his disease. I found this book more informative then entertaining. It was real, it was good, it just was not real good.
Its a biography of a mathematician.
Seeing the reviews below, I have to say: Its a biography of a mathematician. If you don't have any idea of what game theory, set theory, or quantum mechanics is... you might not get many references in this book. That being said there is very little "actual" math in the book; so math hesitant listeners need not beware. Most listeners with a well-rounded knowledge in mathematics and science will be able to understand and enjoy this book.
It does delve, perhaps slightly obtusely, into the history of Princeton, the IAS, etc. but the author uses this to help the listener really understand the environment and world that Nash was living in. Plus there are lots of anecdotal stories about Einstein, Von Neumann, etc. that are actually quite interesting.
There were a few times in the first few chapters I laughed out loud.

    Language: English
    Release date: 11-11-08
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 712 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
A natural storyteller with a bottomless pit of material, Lange grew up in a close-knit, working-class Italian family in Union, New Jersey, as a maniacal Yankees fan who pursued the two things his father said he was cut out for: sports and comedy. Tragically, Artie Lange Sr. never saw the truth in that prediction. He became a quadriplegic in an accident when Artie was 18 and died soon after. But as with every trial in his life, from his drug addiction to his obesity, to his fights with his mother, Artie mines the humor, pathos, and humanity in these events and turns them into comedy classics.
True fans of the Stern Show will find Artie gold in these pages: hilarious tales that couldn't have happened to anyone else. There are stories from his days driving a Jersey cab, working as a longshoreman in Port Newark, and navigating the dark circuit of stand-up comedy. There are outrageous episodes from the frenzied heights of his coked-up days at MADtv, surprisingly moving stories from his childhood, and an account of his recent U.S.O. tour that is equally stirring and irreverent. But also in this volume are stories Artie's never told before, including some that he deemed too revealing for radio.
Wild, shocking, and drop-dead hilarious, Too Fat to Fish is Artie Lange giving everything he's got to give. And like a true pro, the man never disappoints.
    Critic Reviews:
"A very funny man." (David Letterman)
"A comedy treasure....One of the funniest guys there is....The pride of New Jersey." (Jimmy Kimmel)

    great book, horrid readers
sadly, i cannot give this audible book the same rating i would give the written book. the book itself is funny, sad and eye opening. when the audible version starts, Artie Lange begins as the voice of the book. However, other readers take over and bring this book to an end for me. Please redo the audible with one reader who can actualy read.
Funny - but no forward by Howard
Artie spoke a lot on the air about how touched he was by Howard's forward to his book. It would have been nice if the powers that be had included the forward in the audiobook - unfortunately, the forward is not included.
Decent book - but I still would love to read Howard's words. Guess I'll have to pick up the dead tree edition.
    Fantastic Listen
Where does Too Fat to Fish rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This absolutely ranks waaaaay at the top of the autobiographies I've listened too. Artie is so honest and has really lived life. He pulls no punches, doesn't sugar coat it and he is truthful about himself which most people aren't. This story is hilarious, sad, poignant... absolutely worth your time!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Too Fat to Fish?
My favorite story was about Artie and his Dad going to the world series. Absolutely made me cry and gives me goosebumps now remembering it.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Artie Lange?
Absolutely... and he should have read the entire thing!!!!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I DID listen to this all in one sitting.
    Any additional comments?
I am not a howard stern fan- don't even listen to his show... so that is not why I got this book. Artie Lang is a talented man.
    Too funny to not buy
If you are from the the Tri-State you will LOVE this book.If you are a fan of the Stern show, you will love this book.

    Quality family time
Our entire family has enjoyed listening to this series. The narrator, Cameron Beirerle, does a superb job of bringing the characters to life. I honestly can't imagine reading the books after having listened to them first. We have been sad at the end of each book that it must come to an end and we don't yet have the next book ready to listen to.
Not only is the audio format excellent, but the true credit goes to Ralph Moody for authoring such a well written and exciting story of his life. There has been so much opportunity for rich discussion with our children thanks to the Little Britches series.
    Little Britches Series Book #1
I finished this book in 2 days. It was wonderful! Full of old fashion values and what it actually took to get through harder times. I loved this book so much I am now reading the book.
    Great Life Lessons
What made the experience of listening to Man of the Family the most enjoyable?
I like all Ralph Moody books I have read. This one I decided to listen to as well. I was not disappointed. The story came through with the same strength and heart.
    Little Britches
These books are worth checking out. You will see why they have captured so many hearts! They are worth your time becasue they are touching, funny, and sweet in all the right places!
I must "read" all of the series!
Would you listen to Man of the Family again? Why?
I watch movies once; and I read books once. For me, there's too much to do to go back.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Man of the Family?
I have truly enjoyed learning of all the creative ways Ralph earned money to help out the family.
Which character as performed by Cameron Beierle was your favorite?
Of course, Ralph is my favorite character. I find it interesting how he talks most about the sister that is closest to his age. And I enjoy him talking about her, too.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed and got teary eyed, too.
    Any additional comments?
I find this series of books as ones I want to "read" to acquaint myself more with how life was before I was born.

In this rollicking memoir of his quest from Mexico to Costa Rica to unravel the circumstances of Christopher's disappearance, Weisbecker intimately describes the people he befriended, the bandits he evaded, and the waves he caught and lost en route to finding his friend. Along the way, he shares hilarious stories of his adventures with Christopher in their carefree youth as globetrotting, pot-dealing beach bums.
A tale of lost innocence and enduring friendship, In Search of Captain Zero is a trip unlike any other.
    Critic Reviews:
"[E]nchanting....[Weisbecker's] adventures are as thrilling and as entertaining as any fictional road trip could ever hope to be....This memoir is, like any good autobiography, a journey to the place where memories live, an adventure of the mind." (Booklist)
"[A] lovely personal reflection that mixes the right amount of dreamy meditation with page-turning allure....Weisbecker clearly delights in storytelling as much as he enjoys language itself." (Publishers Weekly)

    Great Surf Adventure Story
What does Joe Barrett bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The narrator does a wonderful job. If I didn't check I would be sure it was the actual author narrating. Pronounced all the slang and spanish well. Also sounds like a white guy in the 50 year old range.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The end of the search is emotional. Some surprises, and then some mid-life crisis/soul-searching stuff that you can either leave or take depending in your own feelings and views on life.
    Any additional comments?
Definitely recommended for anyone who likes surf, travel, or central america. I like all, so it was a great book. Especially for surfing, which is pretty limited on good books. In the world there are lots of magazine articles, movies and pictures on surfing. Even some good biographies, but not all that many great surf adventure tales in book form.
    Couldn't stop listening
Enjoyed this book a great deal. Great philosophical insight through the eyes of a surfer/writer in search of his long time friend as he traveled to south, deeper... Not a good read for the puritanical type as there are plenty of drug references and nefarious behavior in general so the less than open minded may be offended and miss the point.
    real good.
different. not the norm. a fun listen. I would recommend it to anyone who likes off beat adventure stories
    Living Adventure
Enjoyed so much about this story, and details of his life experiences! This story was on my waking mind, and in my dreams for the two weeks it took me to get to the end.
    Love Weisbecker
Although he's sometimes a little brash and comes across a bit sexist in regards to his view on women- I love Weisbecker. He is a true character and writes with integrity and truth. His accounts are amusing, well written and occasionally very profound. I read a lot and he really stands clear to me as a truly unique and brilliant contemporary writer for those who appreciate things a little gritty.

    Title: Easy Company Soldier
Subtitle: The Legendary Battles of a Sergeant from WW II's 'Band of Brothers'
    Author: Bob Welch, Don Malarkey
    Narrator: John Bedford Lloyd
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 12 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-12-08
    Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 295 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Sgt. Don Malarkey takes us not only into the battles fought from Normandy to Germany, but into the heart and mind of a soldier who beat the odds to become an elite paratrooper and lost his best friend during the nightmarish engagement at Bastogne.
Drafted in 1942, Malarkey arrived at Toccoa Camp in Georgia and was one of six soldiers who earned their Eagle wings and went to England in 1943 to provide ground cover for the largest amphibious military attack in history: Operation Overlord.
In the darkness of D-Day morning, Malarkey parachuted into France and, within days, was awarded a Bronze Star for his heroism in battle. He fought for 23 days in Normandy, nearly 80 in Holland, 39 in Bastogne, and nearly 30 more in and near Haguenau, France, and the Ruhr pocket in Germany.
This is his dramatic tale of those bloody days fighting his way from the shores of France to the heartland of Germany, and the epic story of how an adventurous kid from Oregon became a leader of men.
    Members Reviews:
    Solid American Greatness
I've read through nearly all the materials surrounding Easy Company and this account is fantastic for fellow enthusiasts as well as people new to the story of this remarkable company. Malarkey and Welch make sure they explain everything they encountered as if the user has NOT seen the HBO miniseries or read other books, but there is also a great deal of the personal stories and perspectives of Don Malarkey that make it a valuable point of view for those that had read many of the other memoirs. Lloyd does a great job reading the story with expression and clarity. Malarkey and Welch begin the recount at a dramatic moment - in the frozen woods near Bastone and in riveting detail, describe the harsh conditions of life on the front line. Then they backtrack to the beginning of Malarkey's life and provide a colorful view into prewar America on the rural west coast (Oregon). From there the story progresses linearly through the prewar years, the attack on Pearl Harbor, basic training, crossing the pond, life in the UK, D-Day, Market Garden, Bastone, The Eagles Nest, the end of the war and post war life. What you come away with is a sense of awe about the WWII generation and the men that fought desperately, won and got on with their lives. I really wish I could meet Don Malarkey, but given I probably will not, this was an invaluable substitute and I am so glad I listened to it.
I AM SO PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN
If ever you find yourself disappointed in our great country listen to the book "EASY COMPANY SOLDIER". UNABRIDGED) It is the most heartwarming true story I have ever listened to. After completing the listen, I realize how lucky I am to be an American. I also realized how much our soldiers gave and continue to give to our great nation without expecting anything in return.
It is a story about the sadness of war, and how one person survived it. The book describes in detail the horrors he experienced. There is no movie that could come close to Don Malarkey's experiences. If I could give this listen more than five stars, I would rate it over a thousand stars for its honesty. I'm sure I will listen to it again and again.
    EASY COMPANY SOLDIER IS BRILLIANT.
Thanks for reading my review PLEASE READ IT.

    Touching
This book held my interest and was very enjoyable. Unlike the other reviewers, I'm not from Puerto Rico but have been learning Spanish and purchased the book in order to practice reading in that language.
I was fascinated with the story and couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next. There was humor throughout and the author had a unique way of reacting to things. She and I graduated from high school in the same year (as it turns out) and I could relate to some of the history in the book and the family stories were also quite moving.
I did feel as though the author sometimes seemed to feel a little "picked on" but that didn't detract from the story at all. She was also completely impressive and intelligent and lived a life far different from my own. I loved the book and learned lots of Spanish along the way. The story was quite touching and I'm looking forward to reading anything I can by Esmeralda Santiago.
    Excellent
From the time I heard the way the author described the feel and smell of a "guayaba", I was in awe. As a puertorican myself, this book just brought to mind all those stories, most of them sad, of other family members leaving your island behind and try to make a better life. How they struggled to hold on to their customs in strange land and not get swallowed by their adoptive one.
    Great Read
This book brings back my own childhood memories of growing up Puerto Rican in Brooklyn. I loved it!
    takes you back in time
Listening to Esmeralda Santiago tell this story took me back to when I was Puerto Rican. I was 5 yrs old when I first came to NY and now at 55 yrs old I can still remember a few things from Puerto Rico and the school days here in NY. The time when I was also put back a grade because I didn't speak English.
If you want to relive those good old days when you was Puerto Rican I would buy this book and the one that follows "Casi una mujer" which I am about to do as soon as I post this review. God Bless, Miriam
    Good, interesting
What did you love best about Cuando Era Puertorriquena (Texto Completo) [When I was Puerto Rican ]?
I loved hearing about what it was like in Puerto Rico, the family life, and the naive observances of Esmeralda (naive because she was young, and so described in that way). I also loved hearing about the US through the eyes of a young girl in Puerto Rico. I'm several generations US citizen on both sides so when it comes to immigration, I have zero first hand experience and I really enjoyed listening to the story of how it came about for Esmeralda Santiago. It was all beautifully described and engaging.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I loved hearing about what it was like once they got on the plane to the US. "All I could taste was salt." Compared to Puerto Rico, the only spice we seem to use is salt! It's very true. And I LOVED hearing about her experiences in the US school system, as a foreigner. It is something very foreign to me, as a white-bread type American, and I found it very interesting. I cried a few times in this part, not from sadness though. It was quite incredible.
    Any additional comments?
I listened to this book in Spanish, it was very good.

The Best Audio Book I've ever listened to
Ive listened to over 70 audio books and this was unequivocally the best one yet. Entertaining, educational, exquisitely written and truly heart-warming, Kerasote gives the reader a new insight on the human-dog relationship. No longer will you believe that humans should be the master or alpha dog over our canine companions. Everything Ive ever learned about dogs and had accepted as common knowledge had to be revisited after listening to this book. As a result, I now have an entirely new outlook on raising and living with dogs.
The story of Ted and Merle was so emotionally addicting, I consumed it from start to finish in less than a weekend. It is a wonderfully written book from a truly remarkable author that found a friend and companion that taught not only him, but all who have read his book. Thank you Mr. Kerasote for sharing your story of one of the most remarkable dogs ever. Coupled with the marvelous narration of Patrick Lawlor, Merles Door is definitely a winner and unquestionably worthy of five stars in every aspect.
    Thank you, Ted
This book is for anyone who's ever had a dog look at them and say, "You need a dog, and I'm it."
I've read a lot of books about dogs, and books about dog behavior. This book combines both in a way that will instruct you, make you laugh, and make you cry.
The author presents factual information about dogs along with a variety of opinions and popular theories about dog behavior, which is interesting. But he also tells one of the best "dog-oirs" I've ever read.
The narrator is one of the best I've heard so far too.
    One of my Favorites!
This is a wonderful book. I just finished the last 30 minutes of the book while viewing the "Merle Slideshow" on the author's website (www.kerasote.com). I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you have a box of tissues close at hand.
    Truly wonderful!
This is without a doubt one of the most wonderful books I have ever listened to. I was apprehensive at first about buying it, but gave in to my love of dogs and did so. I am so glad I did.
This book is very amusing -- I had a smile on my face almost all the way through. It is also very educational. The combination of the author's descriptions of Merle's behavior and the reader's interpretation of his 'voice' are just great. This story -- Ted's relationship with Merle -- is very moving. Since listening to the book I have seen the hardcover and there is a photo of the two of them which expresses exactly the love between them, which is captured beautifully in the audio.

Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching and gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it. For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly 20 years ago. Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded. Wouldn't you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you?

How to live... and how to die
A brilliant story with such feeling. Mitch, you are inspirational.
Tuesdays with Morrie was given to me as a book by a now dear departed friend. Means so much more.
    Great
    Beau-ti-ful Story!!
As soon as I purchased it, I started listening, and enjoyed each and every minute of it.
In my opinion, it is extremely well written and on the top of that the narration is outstanding, too.
It is great to listen to the story narrated by the author, and he reads the book beautfully.
This is a true story which makes the book even more special, I think.
Thought provoking, inspiring and the author makes you laugh here and there as well.
I hope you enjoy the book just as much as I did, if you decide to get it.
    An outstanding book
This book is not only packed full of life lessons, but is a wonderful story as well. It touches your heart.
    Narration was outstanding.
    Pragmatic words on difficult issues
Living and dying well provide many challenges that continue to baffle us. "Tuesdays with Morrie" gives some stimulating insights through the recounting of conversations between Mitch and his old college teacher Morrie as Morrie dies of Lou Gerig's disease. The book broaches difficult topics without unbelievable hype or off-putting sentimentality. It is a great listen.
