This sermon teaches that gluttony is not merely overeating but allowing food, drink, or other comforts to replace God in satisfying deeper longings, and that true self-control comes not through self-denial alone but through returning to Jesus as the only one who can truly satisfy us.

Anger itself isn’t always sinful, but because our loves are often disordered, wisdom calls us to be slow to anger by examining what we love, looking to God’s patience and mercy toward us, and receiving Jesus’ gentle forgiveness so that we can extend that same patience to others.

This exposes envy as a distrust of God’s goodness that robs us of joy and love, and calls us toward contentment by fixing our eyes on Jesus, trusting his promises, and finding our ultimate satisfaction in him rather than what we lack.

Continuing our series in the Proverbs, Josh Kouri exhibits the warnings of pride, the first and essence of the seven deadly sins, and its trappings against the promises of humility, the first and essence of the seven heavenly virtues, ultimately showing the path of humility as demonstrated by Jesus, emptying himself to take on the form of a servant.

Proverbs presents Lady Wisdom and Lady Folly as two competing invitations—one leading to life, truth, and flourishing through submission to God, and the other through deception and seduction to destruction—calling us to reject folly, repent, and cling to wisdom ultimately embodied in Jesus.

The ascension of Jesus reveals that He is the victorious King who owns and reigns over all things, and because He alone has clean hands and a pure heart, those who trust in Him can confidently enter God’s presence and live with hope.
