As of January 2026, anti-government protests across Iran have resulted in at least 36 deaths and more than 2,000 arrests following ten days of unrest. The demonstrations, which began in late December 2025 over the collapse of the national currency (the rial) and soaring inflation, have spread to over 285 locations across nearly all provinces. Human rights groups, including HRANA, report that 34 of the deceased were protesters (including four children) and two were security personnel. Major flashpoints include Malekshahi, where security forces reportedly used live ammunition, and recent raids on hospitals in Ilam and Tehran to arrest wounded demonstrators.
