February 11, 2020I made a big mistake over the weekend. I was challenged last night to review what I had done and whI made a big mistake over the weekend. I was challenged last night to review what I had done and when I did, it was glaring to me. How is it in the moment I couldn’t see it? It was great timing that when the confrontation came I had already spent the evening with a chilly walk and some warm reflective conversations. It still did not stop the sting though...Here’s what happened next. It fits very nicely with a reflective practice framework I am reading about now 1. Intrapersonal reflection: I recognised instantly the defensive mechanism. I was geared for a fight. That needed to filter through some values - humility and honesty. As well as knowing my personality, which will very often challenge and react first before pausing. I remembered too that I had engaged in something out of character when I committed this mistake. I was at the time in a reactive space having had a big weekend and not having recovered from it. So I paused. 2. Interpersonal reflection: My faux pas was on a social media platform and I did not know the person who (rightfully) challenged me. Objectively when I reflected on why they may have done so I could see that there was wisdom in not only correcting my mistake, but also stepping into a space of value driven behaviour which was to remain humble and open to inspection and so be part of a culture of open and redeeming dialogue. 3. Systemic reflection: This was the level today which hit me. With so many changes, demands and concerns in our world it is easy to be swept up in despair and reactivity to requests for input. The book I am reading reminds me that 20 years ago it was enough to ask someone how they were going in the last week. Today it is more relevant to ask someone what has the world demanded of you in the last week. Are there knowledge gaps that are making you feel ill prepared. Are there ways of relating at large in the age of social media that frightens you? Do you understand how the issues you are encountering fit into the wider frameworks of change? So this morning I slowed down to take stock. To release the events of the weekend and to be content with the growth that comes from mistakes and humble enquire. Tomorrow I am different, tomorrow I have grown a step more than yesterday. That is good enough....more2minPlay
