Dr. Heather Shenkman is an interventional cardiologist practicing in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Shenkman was exposed to vegetarianism early on via her brother and soon followed in his footsteps. But as time went on, she learned that what she was doing still wasn’t the best lifestyle she could be living. As a doctor who truly practices what she preaches and who is doing as much as she possibly can for her patients and their wellbeing, Dr. Shenkman in our conversation was able to succinctly put her finger on many reasons why more doctors aren’t prescribing lifestyle medicine. Her answers made me shake my head in disbelief, but , like she said the medical establishment is trending in the right direction and we are seeing progress. Our conversation goes in several directions: her specialty as a cardiologist, her diet, her views and philosophies on certain myths and misconceptions and her experience as a plant-based triathlete and how she is able to train and compete on a 100% vegan lifestyle without negatively affecting her fitness or recovery.
