Barnraisers - Conversations with the World's Ultimate Team Players

Dr. Lynne Brinckmeyer: How Teamwork Rules the Music Room

Listen Later

"When you make a mistake in music, whether your playing an instrument or your singing, its audible for every single person in the room to hear...and so you have to have this trust with everyone else that if you make a mistake, that its a safe mistake and you learn from it and you move on. Your quite vulnerable when you're in an ensemble like that. That trust that you develop builds community.”
~Dr. Lynn Brinckmeyer, (Associate Director of the School of Music & Director of Choral Music Education at Texas State University)

To say that today’s guest is an Ultimate Team player might just be selling her a little short. Dr. Lynn M. Brinckmeyer is Professor of Music, Associate Director of the School of Music and Director of Choral Music Education at Texas State University.
During 2006-2008 she served as President for The National Association for Music Education (formerly MENC) in the United States. Other past offices include Music Educators Journal Editorial Board, and Washington Music Educators Association General Music Curriculum Chair.
In addition to chairing the Music Department for six years and conducting the East Washington University Concert Choir, Dr. Brinckmeyer has also been recognised with the Washington Music Educators Association Hall of Fame, the MENC Northwest Division Distinguished Service Award and Eastern New Mexico University’s Outstanding Alumni Award.
Dr. Brinckmeyer is also a well-respected author having published three successful books; Rhythm Rescue!, Wander the World with Warm-ups and Advocate for Music.
Somehow, amongst all of this, she has found the time to establish the Eastern Washington University Girls’ Chorus and served as Artistic Director for the South Hill Children’s Chorus in Spokane, Washington. Dr. Brinckmeyer is also co-founder and Artistic Director of the Hill Country Youth Chorus in San Marcos, Texas.
Dr. Brinckmeyer’s degrees include a Bachelor of Science in Education and Master of Music Education from Eastern New Mexico University, and a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Kansas.
Now at Texas State University Dr. Brinckmeyer teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in choral music education and she directs the Texas State Women’s Choir. Each summer Dr. Brinckmeyer teaches classes for Will Schmid’s World Music Drumming workshops.
Just in case all the awards, acheivements and accolades are washing over you, let me cut to the chase and put it simply…. Dr. Brinckmeyer is one of the most accomplished and qualified people on the planet when it comes to collaboration and working with teams in the world of music.
She conducts all-state choirs and honor choirs, she lectures, she presents master classes and has so far performed in 49 of the 50 states the USA, and twenty different countries, including China, Brazil, South Africa, Cuba and Peru.
Her ideas on teams and hearing them described in the backdrop of choirs, harmonies and ensembles simply amazing.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Dr. Lynn Brinckmeyer.
