Rico Gear is one of the most popular and celebrated members of the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team. A status he earned while slicing through opposition defences and scoring tries all over the world as a professional athlete for over 17 years.

 

But watching him perform on the world sporting stage was not how I first met Rico. In fact, I actually unknowingly met Rico at a Tony Robbins UPW event in Sydney earlier this year. He really is a great guy and he was so generous with his time and help to make this conversation happen.


 

So that’s how we got to here! 

 

But that's another story.
 
In case your wondering how good Rico was, take a look at these stats:
 

Scored his first All Blacks hat-trick in 2005, against Wales at Cardiff.
Scored two tries for eventual runners-up Nelson Bays in the 2005 Air New Zealand NPC Division Two final.
Led, by a comfortable margin, all New Zealand players with 25 first-class tries in 2005.
Played for New Zealand Maori against the British & Irish Lions in 2005 – one of the few players to face the Lions four times.
In the All Blacks final match of 2004, he became just the third All Black to score two tries in a match against the Barbarians.
Represented New Zealand Sevens at nine International Sevens tournaments and won a gold medal at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.
Inaugural winner of the Richard Crawshaw Trophy for Sevens Player of the Year in 1998.

Despite the individual honours, Rico is a team player through and through. And his contribution, and experience in building the brand new team culture for the New Zealand rugby in mid- 2000s was pivotal in setting the team on a course that would see them win two consecutive world cups in 2011 and 2015. (And incedentally earned them a spot as one of the 16 best sporting teams in history, according to Sam Walker; another Barnraisers alumni who appeared on the show in episode 6.
 
But more on that a little later.

There’s a million different words, angles, experiences and achievements that I could choose to highlight how great Greg is, but that would be doing him an injustice. He didn't agree to come onto this show to promote any of those things. He came on the show because I asked him. That's when I reached out on initially, the simple reply I got back was...

I think that says it all.
This conversation was a little shorter than most, Greg had an extremely important call after mine. At the time I got the feeling that he had a phone date with someone extremely important, like Bill Gates or Richard Branson. But I realise that it could just as easily have been another guy or girl like me..someone who he promised to give some to over an email.
I'm not going say any more than that….it will all make perfect sense once we get going.

From the outside, De La Salle High School in Concord, California looks like any other boys high school. But coursing through the halls, theatres and locker rooms there is something very special going on. Something that every other school, business, or community would love to have...and that is one of the strongest team-first cultures that I have ever encountered.
And perhaps nowhere is this more apparent than in their varsity football program.
You may have heard of the Spartans. There’s been a number of books, documentaries and even a major movie has been made about them.
And the reason for all of this exposure?
Well for 14 seasons, the De La Salle Spartans Football team was undefeated. Yes, you heard that right, between 1992-2004 the Spartans football program managed to rattle off 151 consecutive victories and proved to themselves, and the world, that team culture trumps personnel every day of the week. I love the Spartan story, not just for the brilliance of the achievement or the skill, commitment and determination that it took from the athletes & coaches involved. I love the Spartan story for the incredible culture that their teams have all accepted, owned, displayed and passed on over the years.
Terry Eidson took over in 1992 as the defensive coordinator of the team and still holds this position to this day, (he is also in charge of special teams). Terry has been an integral piece of the Spartan puzzle for the past 36 years. To put this in context, and I don’t think that Terry would ever talk about it, (it was never mentioned in our conversation), but the Spartan's record since he took over as defensive coordinator in 1992 is a staggering 323wins-16losses-2draws. That’s a winning percentage of 95%!
In this conversation we focus on how a school like De La Salle has managed to build such a formidable culture, one that is loved and pushed by the students, teachers, coaches and parents alike.
Please note that the sound quality can get little rough in places during this conversation and the whole episode was recorded in the coaches lounge at the school. So throughout the course of the conversation, you’ll hear coaches filing in and out of the room and some background conversations going at the same time. We’ve tried to clean that up as best as possible, but there is a little bit more noise than usual. Just picture yourself sitting in the locker room after a practice session and imagine the coaches walking in and out of the room and you should be all good to go.

Making teams work better isn't always easy. Sometimes it's downright hard work. But if there's one thing I've learned, it's that it never has to be complicated.
This episode is a look back on the guests we've spoken to on the show so far, and if there was ever a doubt about those sentiments, then they were ceraintly put to bed by these ultimate team players.
