Today we’re talking about Dr. Muhammad Shahrour — a Syrian thinker, researcher, and civil engineer whose work reshaped modern Islamic thought. Trained as an engineer in Moscow and Dublin, he spent decades teaching and practicing in Damascus, all while developing a groundbreaking reinterpretation of the Qur’an. His books, including The Qur’an, The State and Society, and Towards a New Fundamental Jurisprudence, challenged traditional jurisprudence and called for a rational, contemporary reading of scripture. He was praised by many for helping a generation move beyond extremism, and criticized by others as a heretic, Dr. Shahrour remains one of the most controversial and influential voices in contemporary Arab intellectual life.
