Episode #105 This week on What The Fat I talk with the brilliant MD, Dr. Paul Saladino. Dr. Saladino trained at the University of Arizona with a focus on Integrative Medicine. He went on to residency at the University of Washington in psychiatry and is a certified Functional Medicine practitioner (IFMCP) through the Institute for Functional Medicine. His interests include the autoimmune basis of psychiatric illness, connections between the microbiome and mental health, and nutritional biochemistry. In this episode, we dive deep into the benefits of the carnivore diet and discuss topics such as the ethics behind consuming meat, why we don’t actually need fiber or plants in the human diet, and how to get all of the nutrients you need from eating an animal nose to tail.   Enjoy the Show!   Takeaways Paul has always been passionate about finding and understanding the root cause of his patients problems and is fascinated by the role nutrition plays in disease. He believes that if done correctly, the carnivore diet can be a great tool to utilize for optimal health and that a plant based diet could actually do more harm than good.     Links and Resources The Tracker By Tom Brown Natures Middle Instagram Ancestral Supplements Dr. Saladino’s YouTube Dr. Saladino’s Instagram Dr. Saladino’s Twitter Dr. Saladino’s Facebook Email:  [email protected] Paul’s Website    Show Notes  1:27 Finding Functional Medicine and Becoming an MD 5:42 How Nutrition Plays A Role In Disease 12:48 Meat Consumption and Ethics 21:17 The Nose To Tail Approach And Why It’s Important 26:40 How To Structure a Well Formulated Carnivore Diet 36:44 Should You Supplement Vitamins and Minerals? 40:40 The Problem With Bacon 48:26 The Cons of Raw Carnivore 52:15 A Day In The Life For Paul 56:36 Is Fattier Or Leaner Meat Better? 1:08:00 There Is No Need For Fiber In The Human Diet 1:07:21 Satiety and The Carnivore Diet 1:10:20The Connection Between Butyrate and Fiber 1:16:26 The Least Toxic Plants To Consume 1:21:21 Where You Can Find Dr. Paul Salidino   Tweets   “I’m obsessed with the idea of what causes something, I’m just not satisfied as a physician doing my work unless I can at least try to approach the root cause of an illness”   “Diet affects disease”   “Plants don’t want to be eaten…what if plants are not good for humans?”   “Animal agriculture kills less animals than the harvesting of grains and plants”   “All life is the same and all of life is connected and in order for something to live something must die, that is the way of life”   “It is a responsibility to live well. You better be a good quality human because by existing on the planet you are using other resources, you are taking other lives, so make your life the best expression that it can be because there’s no way around that”   “The optimal multivitamin would be an animal”   “Everything a human needs is not just in the muscles of the animal”   “Our micro biome has over 1000 species, some of which are going to vary by our diet.
