His groundbreaking research includes introducing the forage radish as a cover crop and developing practical methods for assessing soil health. He has a Ph.D. in Soil Ecology from Virginia Tech, and his textbook, The Nature and Properties of Soils, is the most widely used soils textbook in the US and around the world.
