A restaurant chain recently closed down in Australia due to its focus on bad customer service, showing how customer satisfaction can be affected by employee happiness. 

Dr Tony believes that a positive environment is key to ensuring employee happiness, and this starts with figuring out the root cause of any negativity. Common causes of negativity in the workplace include micromanaging, which can lead to employees feeling disrespected and not allowed to do their job properly. 

Creating an environment where employees can feel respected and fulfilled is essential for any business to succeed. The episode focuses on the importance of trust and empowerment in the workplace. Dr Tony talks about how managers need to trust their staff and not try to take over and do the work themselves. 

They need to be inspiring leaders who are able to lead their teams in a positive and creative way. He also highlighted the importance of having a little extra cash on hand for unexpected expenses. Dr Tony encourages business owners to think critically and plan ahead to ensure their success. Dr Tony discusses how businesses should save money during the end of the financial year. 

He advises businesses to take advantage of tax minimization and plan for future growth opportunities by setting aside extra cash in case of an unexpected opportunity. He explains that this is an important part of budgeting.

Dr Tony also talks to us about decision trees and how they can help businesses make the best decisions for their business. He encourages businesses to consider all their options and to make decisions that will benefit them in the long run.

Decision trees require the user to consider the possible outcomes of each decision and the potential cash return from each decision. This strategy is used by many people but is not known by everyone. Ron asked Dr Tony how to determine the variables or factors to include in the decision tree model. Dr Tony explained that it takes time to work out the decisions that need to be made about the future of the company. He also stated that it is important to start at the beginning and to think about the future instead of just focusing on the present. 

Dr Tony suggested that the process begins with selecting the decision that needs to be made, and then expanding on the associated questions that will grow and grow to work out the likelihood of a financial turn. 

He cautioned against being overly positive and biased in the decision-making process. He noted that it can be used in any business and that data can be helpful in fleshing out the decision tree. He also noted that the next step after deciding would be to develop a full implementation plan. Finally, he noted that while AI can help to some extent, it cannot take into account the nuances of the situation or any personal considerations. Overall, decision trees can be a helpful tool in making informed decisions, but it is important to keep the personal and nuanced aspects in mind.

Dr. Tony Aitchison from Paradelta Strategy was featured on Podcast City Radio to discuss the difference between Zebras and Unicorns in business. Zebras and Unicorns are often used to describe different types of companies and how they are managed. Zebras typically focus on growth and profitability, while Unicorns focus on raising funds, vulnerability, and long-term growth. Dr. Tony explained that Unicorns are companies that have achieved great amounts of valuation and although some of these companies have been around for more than five years, they are still considered unicorns.

The conversation focuses on the difference between a Zebra and a Unicorn event when starting a business. Generally, a Unicorn event is when a venture capitalist is looking for a return on investment within five years and a Zebra event is when a business takes a slower and steadier approach to growth. It is difficult to achieve a Unicorn event and most businesses should focus on the Zebra approach to avoid failure. Investors are interested in getting their return; if a company cannot provide it, they are unlikely to invest in future ventures.

A Unicorn business is rare but has a low probability of success due to its disjointed operations, lack of customer focus, and other factors. A Zebra business is more common and has a higher probability of success due to its focus on quality products and customer service and its ability to grow in a more predictable fashion. Ron and Dr Tony discussed how it can be difficult to start a unicorn business, as it requires a lot of capital and the risk-averse nature of Australians. Dr Tony also mentioned that it is much better to have a Zebra business, as it will grow in a reasonable and respectable way and you may decide to sell it at some point for a bigger return.

Dr Tony suggests that governments should stay away from getting involved in startups and providing entrepreneurial schemes as they may not be beneficial to the growth of a business. 

He explains that government advisors rarely have any experience in the commercial realm, as the government is there to govern taxation and other areas of politics. There has been a movement for the government to get involved in the startup community, but Dr Tony believes it has eroded other parts of the market that should be operated by the commercial sector. He acknowledges that there are tax incentives such as R&D tax incentives and EIS Qualifications that can be taken advantage of, but overall he believes that governments should stay away from getting involved in startups.
