The 1984 NBA Draft has four of the greatest NBA players of all-time. It also has a bunch of other guys. And on the latest episode of Draft Day, you get both! Well, you get the four great NBA players, plus eight of the other guys. Some of them were good! Listen to find out who those players were and why there was such a long gap between episodes.
How important is listening to every episode of a podcast to you? In honor of the start of the NFL Draft tonight, John and Jason break down, in arguably excruciating detail, every scene of the 2014 film DRAFT DAY, starring Kevin Costner and Jennifer Garner. Hear their thoughts on Ivan Reitman's final directorial effort, how fast it would take to fly from Manhattan to Cleveland, and how highly they would draft 37 year-old Chadwick Boseman in the NFL Draft.
1996 was a banner year for the St. Louis Cardinals. They made their first postseason in nine years, Tony LaRussa and Bill DeWitt Jr. entered and Ozzie Smith existed, and they drafted higher than they ever drafted before, selecting Wichita State pitcher Braden Looper third overall.
Do John and Jason like this pick? (No) There's only one way to find out (actually I just said the answer, it is no)--listening to the boys redraft the first 20 picks of the 1996 MLB Draft. In addition, they discuss the first big sports draft since the start of the podcast and also Mike Lansing briefly, for some reason.
We're getting back around to the 'Chel. Ugh, how embarrassing is it that referring to the NHL series of video games as "Chel" is part of hockey vernacular? Or that people will refer to celebrations as a "celly" without feeling intense internal shame? Or that we've abandoned giving out cool hockey nicknames in favor of going with what NHL players call each other, which is some derivative of their name with "er" or "y" at the end. Way back when, Georges Vezina was nicknamed "Chicoutimi Cucumber". Nowadays he'd be called Vezzer or something.
Anyway, by some standards we're old, but by other standards we're young, like how neither of us were alive when this draft happened, but we have fond memories of many of the players involved in the 1988 NHL Draft. And we discuss those, as well as some players we don't really care about.
Dumb preamble trivia goes until 36:50.
Ah, time to turn the calendar on another month. And in honor of the start of the new month, we're going to start making good episodes. April Fools! We would never set our sights that high. But we did set our sights on an unconventional draft, in which the hosts draft the worst draft picks in major professional sports history. From those who were poorly evaluated to those who got in their own ways, sometimes we say nice things about these players and sometimes we're talking about Lawrence Phillips.
You didn't think we'd avoid sports drafts forever, did you? I'm just imagining somebody who started listening on our Oscars draft and then enjoyed the 314 draft and now are like "Oh, they're drafting sportsballs now? Picking handegg rosters, are we?" Look, if you don't care about the NFL or even just don't care about sports, I won't be mad if you skip this episode, but please never talk like this to me or anybody.
Anyway, for those who do listen to this episode, you will hear John and Jason discuss the 1998 NFL Draft, which is headlined by a bunch of Hall of Famers and also included Ryan Leaf. It's a good draft. Enjoy it!
Happy 314 day! Your hosts both have 314 area codes, one still living there and the other nostalgic for his hometown, and in the latest episode, Jason and John draft their favorite St. Louis things. You may be asking yourself what that means, to which we can conclusively say we have absolutely no idea. But we did draft things and that cannot be denied.
The 2023-24 Academy Awards campaign season is all about grand epics from some of the great masters of their art. There is "Oppenheimer", Christopher Nolan's three-hour historical World War II epic. There is "Killers of the Flower Moon", Martin Scorsese's gritty western told over a sprawling 206-minute run time. And now there's "The All-Oscars Draft", Draft Day's 181-minute special episode.
John and Jason are once again joined by Tyler Cox, and the trio release their lists of their favorite films nominated for Best Picture this year. And then, at the 54:35 mark, the three engage in a one-choice-per-year draft to select their favorite winners and runners-up in the major awards at the Oscars.
To quote Bill Simmons the moment after the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Anthony Bennett #1 overall, "WHOA!" The 2013 NBA Draft is the one of the craziest drafts in recent memory, with a historic bust at #1 and the two best players being selected outside the lottery.
For the first time, Draft Day has brought two special guests, Twitter's very own @TySlim90 and @P_Funk36 to help select the best and also a bunch of other guys from the 2013 draft.
In the latest edition of Draft Day, the duo start off by discussing grocery store etiquette and play a game of trivia completely unrelated to sports or drafts, and at 15:15, select their top twenty players from the 2009 MLB Draft.
