1:00:00 ... The Grand Duchess and The Waiter -- A comedy-romance about an impoverished Duchess and a bumbling waiter. Vince Barnett is interviewed (a character actor who bills himself as "Public Pest #1") In the lounge room of the Palace Hotel at Montrose, Switzerland it is early evening, and except for the presence of Albert, the waiter, the room is deserted. Albert, attired in a brass buttoned waiter's coat and stiff shirt, is slumped comfortably in an armchair, idly blowing rings of smoke at the ceiling. The manager of the hotel walks quietly into the lounge room, stops short and then stands watching him with ill disguised irritation.

Guest Melvyn Purvis ("The Greatest G-Man In History") recalls a real safe cracker he met while tracking down John Dillinger. The script was used on "Lux" previously on September 30, 1935. + The story begins behind the grey walls of the state penitentiary. Valentine, played by Pat O’Brien, is called into the warden's office to be told he is to be freed the next day. He promises to go straight and on his release he desperately tries to find a job. Nobody wants to employ an ex jailbird and Valentine finds it hard work surviving. He is constantly being pursued by a cop called Doyle who framed him in the first place and is hell bent on seeing Valentine back behind bars. //

58:46 ... Conversation Piece -- A Frenchman tries to pass off a nightclub singer as nobility. + A flippant period piece of entertainment> The sort that operettas of that time were made of. It begins in a Paris café in 1809. A well dressed gentleman stands by an open window. He is approached by a pretty young lady. The conversation is all about forming a business partnership between the two of them. Their intention is of course to swindle some rich gentleman whom they have yet to find. //
