Drawn To The Flame

You always pack bandages. You're a dab hand at lightening someone's pockets. You do your best work alone. You can read a map really really well. You seek forbidden secrets. You adapt to situations around you.... You are: talented.

In this, the fifteenth episode of Drawn to the Flame, join Peter and Frank as they discuss another trait in Arkham Horror. In earlier episodes we've covered weapons, allies and spells, and now we turn to talents to discern what makes an investigator talented, what place talents have in the game and whether we could all use a bit more scavenging in our lives.

SPOILER POLICY: we'll happily discuss player cards up to and including the Undimensioned & Unseen mythos pack. We'll skirt around encounter cards included in that pack, but talk freely about encounter cards up to Blood on the Altar. NOTE: in this episode we don't talk about encounter cards much at all.

WARNING: Discussion of Undimensioned & Unseen player cards in this episode!

SPOILER POLICY: we'll happily discuss player cards up to and including the Undimensioned & Unseen mythos pack. We'll skirt around encounter cards included in that pack, but talk freely about encounter cards from the core set up to Blood on the Altar.

In this episode, Frank looks at the player cards from Undimensioned & Unseen, which is incredibly hard to type repeatedly, released 11 May, and gives his first impressions. This episode isn't meant to be a definitive review, just Frank the dark horse with his inquiring mind and quick thinking trying to come to some conclusions. And, stay tuned, because he's joined by a special guest at the end of the episode!

A life of luxury, furnished by material wealth and a resourceful spirit had Jenny Barnes want for nothing. Like so many of her class and means, she travelled to Europe to sample the finest delights of the Old World - its culture, heritage, cuisine and charms... until word reached her: her beloved sister was missing.

So Jenny Barnes finds herself back in Arkham, relying on her wits (and a little bit on her wealth). In this episode of Drawn to the Flame, Frank and Peter discuss this tough cookie of an investigator. How does she handle the dangers of Arkham Horror? What talents does her roguish nature provide? And will she ever find Izzie?

SPOILER POLICY: we'll happily discuss player cards up to and including the Blood on the Altar mythos pack. We'll skirt around encounter cards included in that pack, but talk freely about encounter cards up to Essex County Express. NOTE: this episode was recorded before Blood on the Altar was released. We discuss some BotA cards at the end of the episode.

SPOILER WARNING All packs up to *Blood on the Altar* mythos pack discussed! The *story* of Blood on the Altar discussed! SPOILER WARNING ENDS

Join Peter and Frank for the twelfth episode of Drawn to the Flame, in which they take a brief moment - a respite from the storm of horrors, if you will - to reflect on what their steadfast investigators have endured so far, and to ponder what fresh devilry the Dunwich Legacy campaign holds for them. This episode is a conversational, "watercooler" discussion, taking in the larger themes and story of the campaign.

She leads a peaceable life, waiting tables and getting by - at least she used to. But lately her dreams have spoken to her of times long past and places distant and terrible to behold. In that Hyperborean world, in those visions, she is no mere waitress, but a sorceress of fey and dreadful power. And now she feels that power stir within her blood...

Yep, that's right, ladies and gents, she's Agnes Baker, everyone's favourite waitress/witch. In this episode of Drawn to the Flame, Frank and Peter discusses this mysterious and deadly mystic. What does she do? How does she do it? And should she ever delve too deep?

SPOILER POLICY: we'll happily discuss player cards up to and including the Blood on the Altar mythos pack. We'll skirt around encounter cards included in that pack, but talk freely about encounter cards up to Essex County Express.

In this episode, Frank looks at the player cards from Blood on the Altar, released 13 April, and gives his first impressions. This episode isn't meant to be a definite review, just Frank working some hunches and running his keen eye over what he finds. Tune in to snatch some first impressions.

SPOILER POLICY: we'll happily discuss player cards up to and including the Essex County Express mythos pack (still a mouthful). We'll skirt around encounter cards included in that pack, but talk freely about encounter cards from the core set up to Miskatonic Museum (we don't discuss the museum scenario in any detail in this episode though).

Esoteric Devices I: Adaptable & Delve Too Deep

In this episode of Drawn to the Flame, Peter and Frank start a new occasional series on the podcast: the close consideration of just a couple of player cards in Arkham Horror: The Card Game. Working title for these sorts of episodes is 'Esoteric Devices' and they're a chance for us to consider some of the mechanics and structuring of the game in greater detail, as well as the ways that particular cards can warp our expectations of how a card game works.

Peter and Frank are back with another trait-focused discussion, and this time it's all about spells. Spells, huh, yeah? What are they good for? Who can run them? Why should they? Is magic really bad??? All this and more in this episode of Drawn to the Flame.

Spoiler policy: we'll happily discuss player cards up to and including the Essex County Express mythos pack (still a mouthful). We'll skirt around encounter cards included in that pack, but talk freely about encounter cards from the core set up to Miskatonic Museum (don't worry, we don't discuss the museum in any detail in this episode).

SPOILER WARNING: Drawn to the Flame's spoiler policy states that player cards from the most recently released mythos pack are fair game for discussion, and today, Thursday 16th March, was the release date of the second pack in the Dunwich Legacy cycle, the Essex County Express. SPOILER WARNING

So Frank's not really breaking the policy, but there may be players out there who want to wait until they have the pack in their hands, as Frank has done, before looking at the player cards. If you're one of them, maybe don't listen. Otherwise, jump in and hear Frank's first impressions of cards in his hands.

Drawn to the Flame, episode 6: Rex Murphy

He's got a nose for a good story, and wherever he goes, he finds clues of a more pressing conspiracy... if only he could catch a break. It feels like Rex Murphy is the unluckiest reporter alive. Today, Peter and Frank discuss another investigator, and this time is the seeker Rex, who's a veritable bloodhound when it comes to clue collection, but things don't always go his way...

Note: this podcast has audio recorded in a slightly different way. We hope you like it.

Spoiler policy: we'll happily discuss player cards up to and including the Miskatonic Museum mythos pack. We'll skirt around encounter cards included in that pack, but talk freely about encounter cards in the core set and Dunwich Legacy.
