Howdy! How 'bout some southern fried crime for ya? Desmond and Darryll take a good hard look at pre-moustache Burt Reynolds in the rum-running, fascist sheriff crime flick White Lightning. Devil Dinosaur Jr. speeds by in a review of the feature-length car chase Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry. Of course, there's some southern fried rock to go with your movies: "Caution: Dangerous Curves Ahead" by Maylene & The Sons of Disaster, "Steady at the Wheel" by Shooter Jennings, "Time (Is Such a Funny Thing)" by Susan Maughan, and "Don't You Think this Outlaw Bit's Done Got Out of Hand" by James Hetfield. The holidays are over. For many of us, that means our loved ones who have become parasitic monsters in our homes have gone home. Well, this week, we look at some unwelcome visitors in the horror genre. First up, Desmond and Darryll love Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett's The Guest. They love it so much, that Darryll refuses to leave! Desmond invites Duane over, but he can only call in to review the last film Wingard and Barrett did together, You're Next, a very different uninvited guest film. Then, because not all victims of bad visitors are human, Desmond looks at Brian Kaufman's latest novella: The Wretched Walls. There are, of course, some songs to kick off your New Year as well: "Get the Fuck Outta Here" by Diemonds, "Uninvited Guest" by Mercyful Fate, "Looking for the Magic" by The Dwight Tilley Band, "Old House (Bark at the Moonlight)" by Man's Gin, and "We Destroy the Family" by Fear. There's some varied tunes as well for your New Year's week: "My Drinkin' Problem" by Hank Williams III, "My Mind is Dangerous" by Life of Agony, "Party Hard" by Andrew WK, and "New Year's Eve" by Tom Waits. • Dread Media Presents 45: The Horrorcorps - Sick Man
It's a Dread Media Presents debut as MCs and obscure rap aficionados Reece Heinen and Alex Hurt dedicate an entire podcast to going deep on reviews of a single song in the hip hop subgenre of horrorcore. In this inaugural episode, Alex and Reece help us get to know them a little bit before they take on a track from juggernauts of horrorcore: Twiztid and Blaze Ya Dead Homie. "Sick Man" is a triptych from Twiztid's recent 2013 EP, A New Nightmare, featuring their regular collaborator Blaze Ya Dead Homie. The beat, the rhyme scheme, and each rapper's verse is meticulously picked apart like the victims of the titular serial killer. They also discuss the music video for the song, which features horror luminaries Sid Haig and Kane Hodder! Strap in, listen close, and look over your shoulder for Sick Man! You wanted the best, you got the best! This week Dread Media pays homage to the kings of theatrical rock and roll, the Knights in Satan's Service themselves: KISS! First up, join Darryll and Desmond in looking at the band as bizarre, quippy cosmic gods in their weird (and awful) 1978 TV movie, KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park. Then, was it really a good idea for Gene Simmons to give the only copy of a newly dead rocker's new album to an emotionally unstable teenager? Find out as Duane and Desmond are delighted by 1980s heavy metal horror epic, Trick or Treat. There's tunes, of course: "Nothin' To tose" and "Detroit Rock City" by KISS, and "Stand Up" and "Trick or Treat" by Fastway. Send feedback to: [email protected], or 206.203.1213. Get real once again with Dread Media as we dip back into the world of found footage films. The examples run the gamut this week from reality-based to supernatural, from great to awful. First up, Duane and Desmond get a look at the third installment in the ever-innovative found footage anthology series V/H/S: Viral. Then Desmond goes solo on the rich New York socialites gone bad film The Upper Footage and the almost unexplainable Mr. Jones. On top of that, there's a great set of tunes as well: "Horrorvision" by Zodiac, "The Virus of Life" by Slipknot, "Life and Death of the Party" by Alice Cooper, "Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground" by Blind Willie Johnson, and "The Touch of Reality" by The Skull. Get your metal on once again in this packed show of cosmic- and earth-bound heavy metal. First up, Desmond attended a show on GWAR's first tour since the death of Dave Brockie / Oderus Urungus. What did he think? Did new front-people Blothar and Vulvatron live up to Oderus' legacy? Then, he is joined by Darryll for a review of the first Canadian animated feature film and futuristic rock opera Rock & Rule. Devil Dinosaur Jr. takes a look at the low-budget / sci-fi chick-rock masterpiece Vicious Lips. Finally, things take a turn for the serious when Desmond returns for a solo review of the documentary As the Palaces Burn. What episode of Dread Media, metal-themed or otherwise, would be complete without some kickass tunes? "Let Us Slay" and "Fly Now" by GWAR, "Born to Raise Hell" by Cheap Trick, "Light Years Away" by Mary Ellen Quinn, "Walk With Me in Hell" by Lamb of God, and "West End Girls / People Who Died" also by GWAR, get a spin on this week's show.
