Andy Young, The Mountain Money Man (Facebook & Instagram @mtnmoneyman) sits down this week with Outside the Cone, a small batch hand crafted Ice Cream destination in Lynchburg, VA.  

Kyle Spangler dreams up the ideas of flavors and crafts them just steps away from where you can see the staff scooping up a bowl or waffle cone full of your favorite flavor. Allison Fishburne runs the front operations normally while Kyle is in his lab creating the next flavor and says if you see them post a flavor you are crazy about you better jump on it since they run out quickly! 

They have also taken a step to collaborate with local business owners like Ken & Jess Hess of County Smoak to come up with unique flavors such as using their smoaked bacon in ice cream or even smoaked nuts.

This weeks episode I wanted to share a little about myself. 

I grew up in Lebanon, VA with entrepreneurs, musicians and artists all around me.  My grandfather retired off the railroad at 37 with a full pension and then created the family business, Honaker Auto Parts.  I grew up sweeping floors and stocking shelves with motor oil when I wasn't jumping in huge piles of cardboard boxes with my little sister to entertain ourselves in the storage side of the building, a former movie theater/grocery store.  

From having this family business I developed the passion of helping other entrepreneurs, business owners and people making a difference in the community with their financial lives.  So sit back and listen to the story of the Mountain Money Man.

Derek made a huge change of careers to move back to his hometown a little over a year ago.  

Little did he know at the time that a global pandemic was awaiting that would result in him having to totally change how he would reach the youth of his area.  

The pandemic also resulted in him looking back to a simpler time when he grew up.  Creating a small garden in the back yard, enjoying more things at home, and even launching a custom woodworking shop, 58 Woodworks.    The woodworking came from his childhood watching his grandfather craft beautiful pieces and telling stories.
