  • Benjamen McGrath: Job Seeker, ex Vodafone, Twentieth Century Fox | EP06

Dream Job Ready Episode 06: Benjamen McGrath (Job Seeker, ex Vodafone, Twentieth Century Fox)

I worked with Ben at Rip Curl around 10 years ago and he’s also had dream jobs with Vodafone, Twentieth Century Fox and in the advertising agency scene.

Benny is currently unemployed and job seeking though, after recently being made redundant due to a company takeover, so I interviewed him to find out just how someone prepares and deals with that setback when they’re chasing a dream job.

The timing of this interview couldn’t have been more coincidently relevant. The COVID-19 crisis has rocked small and large business, and has led to millions of lost jobs all over the world.

This interview took place in February, so we weren’t aware of Coronavirus at that point and hence we don’t discuss it in the interview. We do however talk plenty about dealing with job loss, managing redundancy, recruiters and staying ready for the next opportunity that presents itself.

  • Jon Hechtkopf: Videographer, Editor & Content Creator | EP04

Dream Job Ready Episode 04: Jon Hechtkopf (Videographer, Editor & Content Creator)

Based in California, Jon has spent the last 10 years traveling the globe filming, editing and working with some of the world’s coolest brands and socially influential people.

Most of his work is in sports, fashion & lifestyle, and his reel of highlights includes jobs with Lorna Jane, The Fat Jewish, Steve Aoki, Frankies Bikinis, Whitefox Boutique, Volcom, Honey Birdette, Smith Optics, AirBnB and The World Surf League.

Jon also worked on staff at Rip Curl for a few years, which is where I met him. We used to send him on surf trips to film Rip Curl surfers and took him to a bunch of World Tour events to help me capture and distribute media footage. We had some good times...

Jon is great in this interview and shares some real truths about getting started and achieving success in the content creation industry. He’s freelanced and he’s worked client side, which gives him a dual perspective on the “how” to make it. This is a must listen for anyone creating content, making or editing videos and wanting to build a career in entertainment.

  • Neil Ridgway: Chief Brand & Marketing Officer for global surfing company Rip Curl | EP02

Dream Job Ready Episode 02: Neil Ridgway (Chief Brand & Marketing Officer, Rip Curl)

Call me sentimental, but I couldn't think of anyone better to be Guest #1 on Dream Job Ready. I have known Neil for over 20 years and owe several of my dream jobs to him and his mentorship.

Neil spent 10 years working in magazines and media, editing and publishing titles such as Tracks Magazine, FHM Australia, New Woman and Smash Hits in their heyday. He eventually left media to take a dream job at Rip Curl, in 2003, and has now been with the surfing company, steering the brand's marketing agenda, for over 17 years...

We cover plenty in this interview. We discuss Neil’s role at Rip Curl and what it takes to get a job and be successful with the brand. We talk about the importance of saying Yes to opportunities… and then building up the type of experience and cred that allows you to knock back some in the future. We discuss his relationship with 3 x time surfing world champion Mick Fanning. And we talk a lot about getting a start in your career.
