Sounds Southern

Dripfall in the Sassafras

Listen Later

Recorded on May 7, 2025, at Belmont, this is the sound of the sundown chorus at the edge of Clear Springs swamp. After a day of thunderstorms, water drips steadily from the understory trees while the swamp birds settle in for the evening. Among them: Barred Owl, Chimney Swift, Summer Tanager, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Prothonotary & Hooded Warblers, Carolina Wren, Louisiana Waterthrush, Great Crested & Acadian Flycatchers, Red-bellied and Pileated Woodpeckers, Brown Thrasher, Tufted Titmouse, Blue Jay, and even the buzz of a Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Beneath the canopy, the steady chorus of crickets and frogs rises, threading through the twilight air.
