This Psalm is a beautiful prayer for protection. It encourages us to put our faith the God, and not in ourselves or others.

Too often we believe a lie that say that when Jesus brings peace, the chaos and struggle goes away. Nothing could be further from the truth. When Jesus brings peace, the storm may continue to rage and even intensify.

As we begin to focus our thoughts toward the Passion week, we have to remember that our King, Jesus, was not celebrated as the ancient Kings of Israel like Saul, David, and Solomon. His reign was not welcomed by Israel or the Nations. His enthronement ceremony was his crucifixion.

This verse has so much context to understand. First, the God of Israel is the One True God. Second, he is the greater party in this covenant extending his protection, favor, guidance, and provision to his people. Third, his request is that we respond in obedience to the laws of his Kingdom.

I love this verse, as it reminds me of the “Just Do It!” slogan Nike used for years. We can make so many excuses about why we don’t have wisdom. But this verse tells us to put away our excuses, and just go after it.

Because In modern Christianity we’ve positioned law against grace, we’ve missed the joy and fulfillment at comes from expressing our love for God through obeying His commandments.

While the final verses of Isaiah 40 are often held on to because as words of encouragement to individuals, it’s important to remember that the greater context is the redemption of Israel. At the time of their writing, Israel was under swift by Babylon. Their nation conquered. Their Temple and Holy City burned. And yet, they were being called to look expectantly for their redemption.
