“We have been monitoring the commitments of local governments in Australia since 2017. We've recently updated the ambitious commitments and found that, in total, 165 Councils out of 537 local governments in Australia have made commitments to net zero emissions. This number covers 31% of all councils. NSW takes the lead in terms of the absolute number of councils committing to ambitious targets. Followed closely by Victorian local governments. Looking solely at the number of councils committing to ambitious targets doesn't give the full picture. The more important metric is the fraction of the country's population that is covered by these commitments by councils, who are looking to lead the communities by example. 70% of Australia's population is now covered by ambitious commitments.”

“It is about understanding the low-hanging fruit and working on that. You don't have to change everything overnight. Yes, to do something like going carbon neutral, you have to be able to commit to buying offsets and not every business has that ability. So, the aim is to reduce your emissions first so that you have to buy less offsets. Seems obvious but really critical to do. And the other thing is to look around within the tourism industry at the help that's out there. The federal government has just put out a sustainability toolkit, Eco-Tourism Australia has a sustainability scorecard before you move into the accreditation rankings of Eco-tourism accredited. And so have a look out. There are heaps of tools that can help you identify that low-hanging fruit if you're not sure what it is to start your journey.”

“It's called a crisis for a reason, and the sooner we can do things, the better. I think the education that I got through this process was that we are already at a point that is very difficult. So now we all have to get on board. You know, now I look at the world slightly differently when I travel myself, I look at what other people are doing and whether they're not doing it, it's a little bit disappointing. So it's really nice to be at this point where we have offset our footprint, but then to look at what else could we do to take it further forward and how quickly can we do this to actually make a meaningful impact.”

“I think authenticity is really important. It's nice to look and learn from what other people are doing, but follow your own normative compass. Follow the path that looks right for you and your organisation, and just work your way through it, step by step. Be ready to have ethically defensible strategies when operating in areas that are open to critique, but it's more important to be a doer than a critic. “We don't have to worry about the next quarterly cycle, like public companies do. We can take judgments that transcend that cycle, understanding that seasons and natural systems produce variable results.
