During our communion season we consider Christ's fifth word from the cross, "I thirst", revealing to us the depths of his humanity and the depths of his suffering - and yet, his unflinching desire to fulfil his Father's will.

Psalm 69 is quoted several times in the New Testament, where it is understood in light of Christ's death and resurrection. John 19:28 tells us that the words of this psalm, specifically verse 21, were fulfilled on the cross when Jesus said, "I thirst".

In a culture obsessed with love, where the motto in recent years has been, "Love is Love", what does this word really mean?
